    I think we should remember that many of us feel guilty flying a couple times a year, but many wealthy business people fly a couple times a week. Companies like Nestle will fly an ‘expert’ across the USA and back each week rather than train a new person nearby. Seeing family is not where the bulk of plane travel comes from

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  2 года назад +7

      No that is also why I said what I said - it is literally less than 1-5% of the population who are flying to the degree that has made it so impactful (and then we can ofc also talk about the air travel companies and their pricing etc) but yeah

    if you don't have a bulk shop near by I have another idea aswell: in europe, there are many indian/south-east europe/latin amercian/north african kind of supermarkets who sell rice in like 20kg bags, thahini in HUGE jars etc.! so even though you'll get some packaging, you'll have a lot better product-packaging-ratio! plus, they are often also a lot less expensive than bulk stores :)

      I agree. I live in the Netherlands, where in most neighbourhoods (of big cities) you have an ethnic supermarket. Being an Asian myself, I’m quite happy about this because I can get all the spices at cheaper price. Otherwise, I always go for items least possible plastic wrapping as best as I can 😅

      Exactly! When I lived in Rome, I frequently shopped at the Vittorio Emanuele market which was quite diverse. I'd always reuse the same plastic bags and carried stuff in my shopping cart.

      I've never seen such a store in my life. Also, that would be only a solution for people who eat a lot of rice/tahini/etc. You also need a way to transport that big bag and store it. If you don't have a car and a big enough kitchen/storage space, that idea is simply not practical.

    I put a picture of my jars on eBay and a guy that owns a big garden outside of my town came around to pick them up
    (About 20-30 pieces?) because it was harvesting season and he needed them for his tomatoes, zucchini, apples etc. That made me really happy, because he was super happy he could get them for free and obviously will use them sustainable also ☺️

    If people's friends are criticizing them for living more sustainably, it sounds like they need new friends. It's one thing to say "That's not my thing." and another to say "ugh, why would you do that?" Like Gitte says, it is helpful to share how the changes you make bring you joy - this is how I got a few of my friends to sign up for a compost pick up service when I shared with excitement that I had started composting this way! I sleep better at night knowing a huge chunk of my waste is no longer going to the landfill.

      I try to do most of my actions quietly or show them in a positive way and not push my views on others. Especially when traveling or staying at someone else's house, I try to be respectful of their home and energy. I've had better eco conversations when someone saw me doing something than I have getting defensive or attacking someone.

    My dilemma is I was frugal before I went low waste. A 5lb bag is .89 cent per pound when in bulk $1.79 per pound. I get mad at myself when I buy the bag. I'm always fighting with my frugality side and my low waste side. That's my dilemma.....

    • @l.olivia865
      @l.olivia865 2 года назад +11

      same here. but huge packagings are also used in bulk shop, and you still can reuse the bag for something else sometimes. Anyway i think our frugality, on a bigger picture, is generally eco-friendly.

    • @Erin-rg3dw
      @Erin-rg3dw 2 года назад

      Same. My budget is pretty tight and sometimes the cost difference isn't feasible. I try to less/better packaging when possible, but cost frequently wins.

    • @leanneono6237

      Same, so some swaps feel very expensive.
      I try and recognise where I have saved money and keep the monetary value in mind e.g £10 saved thrifting a Jacket instead of buying new, I then use that £10 for eco options - that's a few upgrades to organic flour!
      Also, recognising that the more expensive cat litter lasts longer (recycled wood instead of virgin clay), so it evens out cost wise.

    My thoughts with taking responsibility for other people’s shopping habits is: they will buy new fast fashion items whether you buy that one shirt from them or not. It’s not on you at all. They just want to make it easier for themselves financially- selling one of their old items usually isn’t the deal breaker on whether they can afford new things.

    Dilemma: when you live in a city that you KNOW doesn’t recycle very well, but they still have a recycling pickup. Half the time I see the garbage man throw all the recycling buckets straight into the garage truck. All my hard work to sort and strip it to its raw material! I don’t know that there is even a solution for this besides using less, even aluminum and cardboard, which is a shame because it is SO recyclable, or driving it to a place where I know it’s recyclable… on my bike 🤪

I haven't seen them since Nov 2019 and though I do hate what flying does to the planet I don't feel like I have done too much harm as those are the only flights I have ever done in my lifetime of 54 years and it's the only way to see the only other person in my life. I don't take vacations and so it's not as if I am jetting around the world or even continent so I do take comfort that we have to weigh up everything in comparison when it has a huge impact on the quality of my life and wellbeing. My dilemma is saying no, the `refuse` aspect of the.. 5 R's (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose & Recycle). Just last week I walked with my child to the local smoothie/coffee shop, ensured before I walked in I had a cup I grabbed from home. After they filled up and I received my cup back, paid etc. The cashier asked if I wanted a straw, I sadly said "yes" (my brain was on autopilot).
    I was given a plastic straw and I feel bad about it however I hope in the future I'll learn from this experience and say no.
    I'm already thinking of new ways to use the straw. I remember my art teacher used straws to create wet paint linesvacross the canvas... maybe I'll try that.

    New drinking game: take a shot every time she says et cetera
    I relate the to rinsing recyclables one in a sense. Not that I’m rinsing recyclables because we have zero programs where I am BUT I bought the last swab and it takes a bit more water than it shows in the ad to clean it off, and I was like wait whoa that looks like a lot of water
    It’s not. I think actually having a visual of the water used to clean environmentally friendly things is what makes people uneasy. Like oh shit if I’m using this much on this ear swab and *this* looks like a lot, how much water is actually being used to make a regular cotton swab?

    • @nevadag606
      @nevadag606 2 года назад +3

      The water used to clean the swab off is there of course. However, traditional cotton swabs/rounds/balls are made of real cotton, like what our clothes are made of. Which takes TONS of water to grow and process into the final products, I feel like in the long run it will offset the massive amounts of water used to grow the cotton plants, especially if you do it when you’re already in the shower!

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  2 года назад +7

      please don’t, everyone will die 😂
      also as it is mentioned in the comment below, cotton is one of the materials that requires the most water to produce, so even the amount you use to clean your reusable item, is still so much less - and I like the cleaning it in the shower idea as well 😎

    About the travelling via ferry: my boyfriend and I went to Kopenhagen for vacation from Berlin and wanted to make it more sustainable but also affordable so we booked a bus (over ten hours I think..). The moment we stopped to roll onto a ferry i realised we weren’t going through the north of Germany and then all the way through Denmark but over seas with a big old ferry. I was really disappointed in myself that I didn’t realised this when booking, but also hope it was more environmental friendly than flying ...

      Next time I would 100% recommend the train, I have taken the train from Copenhagen to Berlin many times and it is so pleasant (and the train also has a much lower carbon footprint than a plane or an old ferry) 🌿💚 But don’t beat yourself up, you are trying and figuring it out as you go is a part of it

    Sustainability dilemmas are inevitable indeed. While I can relate to these especially since half of my family lives in Europe and I have a lot of jars 🤣 I have a completely different dilemmas trying to live low waste in Ghana. I'm going to make a video about it on my channel.

    The recycling rinsing one sounds like what I used to hear while using cloth diapers. "That can't be more environmentally friendly, look at how much water it takes to wash them!" *insert eyeroll*
    My husband got some crap thrown his way last weekend because we bought an electric lawn mower. Something along the lines of 'Oh, look at you in Biden's pocket. Don't you know those batteries are way worse than a little bit of carbon from the gas?' Bet you can guess who they voted for. This person also doesn't believe climate change is real.

      There are gas powered lawn movers? Must be an American thing. I've only ever seen electric ones. On the other hand, gasoline in my country is so expensive that many people struggle to have enough for everyday car use, who would waste it on lawns 😆

    The other thing with plane travel is go for fewer but longer trips if you can

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  2 года назад +2

      actually the place air planes burn the most fuel is with takeoff, so I usually at that if you can cut out the smaller trips first that’s better. Several smaller trips can easily have a much bigger impact than one long flight, and it is usually with the smaller trips that there is an option to choose other types of transportation as well ☺️🌿 But yeah, also choosing destinations closer by so you don’t need the flight in general is also 👌👌

      @@Gittemary oh I’m so sorry I see now that I misspelled I might go for the longer time and but go less often. Make each trip worth as much as possible (I have corrected to original comment now as well)

    I've got a huge dilemma. The amount of packaging for medical supplies. I have to run IVIG (blood product) and D5W once a month. I also have to run 1 liter of saline once a week to try to mitigate some of my symptoms from medical issues. I also have a port that is accessed weekly. The waste that I go through is monumental. I'm talking about the packaging for the following- huber needle (special needle for port septums), the luer lock tip that goes at the end of the huber needle line, the syringes of saline flushes, the IV tubing lines, the packaging that comes in the kit for the IVIG, the bags of saline, the dressing kits for when I access my port and also the heparin lock flush syringes.
    Because I also have diabetes and am insulin dependent I have to test my sugar several times a day as well as injecting insulin several times a day.
    And because I am on several different oral medications (I do make an effort to get 90 day supplies of my meds to cut down on cost to me and the amount of pill bottles) but what am I supposed to do with so many bottles that can't be reused by the pharmacy (I'm talking about the pharmacy reusing the bottle for the same patient and same medication) and they also can't be recycled either.

      Late reply I know. It’s not your fault that medicine doesn’t come in sustainable packaging. There’s literally nothing you can do about it you need them to survive. Instead of stressing over that make changes in other areas of your life. Can you take public transport more often? Cut out meat or dairy once a week (or permanently)? Bulk shop or buy fruit package free? Find out how you can reuse packaging or reuse waste food?
      Change what you can control you can’t beat yourself up over your limits.
      Hope you feel better about this issue

    I live in a place with no recycling. What kind of materials should I buy, so even if they end up in a landfill, they are not too horrible for the environment? I heard in one of your videos that stainless steel doesn't emit methane, but what about everything else?

    No one can live zero waste unless we make the companies who make the waste (plastic) get the bill of cleaning it up and get more sustainable packaging for our products.

    My personal dilemma is cheese. I'm a vegetarian trying to eat more vegan but I love cheese. Where I live, all cheese substitutes are made of coconut or cashews, which aren't much better than cheese for sustainability and ethics. The solution I've found so far is to make my own substitutes with sunflower seeds or potatoes, or to buy cheese that is about to expire and would be thrown out by the grocery store.

    My eco dilemma is there really isn't much plus size ( I really hate that term) second hand clothes around. It seems like most people the same size as me wear their clothes threadbare and the items never reach the second hand market. And new sustainably produced clothes in larger sizes are unaffordable, I can't afford to pay 2000 SEK for a pair of leggings which will rip between the tights in a couple of months.

    • @danika5696

      While buying fast fashion isn’t the most sustainable option (in terms of production and workers rights) if you wear every item to death that’s sustainable. Plus if you learn to mend your clothes and reinforce the thighs they last even longer which is sustainable.
      Leena Norms has a video showing how she mends her clothes including the thighs of her sustainable dungarees it’s called POV: mend clothes with me I think

    I know you’ve talked about zero but date dogs, but could you weigh in on how to make your cat more zero waste? I’m struggling for litter pan liners that aren’t plastic, and all pet food comes in plastic bags where I live (US Midwest).
    For the attacking relatives, I think that their negative responses are defensive. They feel like you calling your lifestyle “sustainable” is an attack on them and saying that their lifestyle is inherently “unsustainable” and therefore bad or a roundabout way of you calling yourself better than them. I have relatives who think like this, so I know the mindset.
