Nice video Rodney. I like that you included all the not so productive days, because the non stop action videos kind of promote the meat fishery aspect of it. Chinook fishing has been a bit unusual for me this year. Got about 5 or 6 jacks at the beginning of the season and 100% adult fish ever since. Many on roe, but surprisingly also many on jigs. Seems like every time I try to target some coho with a jig I get a big spring on instead. Fighting a big adult on a little twitching rod is a bit of a challenge, feels like the rod will break every time.
Thanks Petr. For me I've found myself stop encountering chinook salmon since that last day in this video. The coho fishing is a bit slow, but I'm still finding a fish or two here and there. It's going to get better very soon! See you out there.
A good hatchery program, years of habitat restorations, favourable ocean conditions and recent saltwater fishing closures have all contributed to what we are seeing in the Vedder right now. It really is quite amazing.
@@FishingwithRod Very true Rod. Was down on my rock this evening and the fish were coming out of the water all over the place. Most acrobatic year ever!

Thanks! There are definitely more slow days than those spectacular days for me. A lot of time is spent on finding the right spots where the fish would hold each year. Once the leg work is done in the first couple of weeks, the rest of the season is a lot more predictable.

Crazy how many springs we saw last year and hopefully many more years to come. My friends are here from the island and haven’t yet fished a river so I’ll be taking them to the vedder tomorrow. Hoping to get them on their first salmon in a river. Haven’t been to the river since last year so I will have some hiking to do to find some spots 😂
So far, since last Monday, chinook salmon abundance has been going up each day and it should be quite good in the next ten days or so if that is what you are after.
Can you make a video on how too find a good fishing spot I always find myself on the vedder not knowing where too fish or how too know where the fish would be.
Thanks Bill. My preference is roe pieces even though it's messy because it's just what I have been using in the past two decades. Roe bags would work and probably work just as well, so it really is just a personal preference and what brings more confidence. Lately, I have discovered beads are working almost as well. Near the end of this video I threw on the bead and it was literally on the second cast the float was buried. I'm looking forward to experiment more with beads instead of having messy hands while I fish. :)

Man you guys got it good. Up here in eastern Oregon by the time the Chinook get up here they are dark and don't cut very good. Coho is a different story though.
These chinook salmon do colour up fairly fast as well once they are in the river for a week. The ones you see in this video, especially on that last day, were caught pretty close to the end of the river where it enters the Fraser River so they’d only been out of the ocean for a day or two.
I get skunked all the time. 🤣 In fact, I just returned from a three-day trip where only three fish were caught. 😆 I use Pautzke Bait’s Fire Cure (red).
Another very nice video. Those spring jacks really put up a fight. A question regarding barbless hooks, what is acceptable, bent down barbs, or must the barb be ground off? Thanks! Hope to see you on the Vedder
Thanks Rick, having the barb pinched down is acceptable. The hooks which I am using, Owner Hooks, have reasonably soft barbs, so I find that I don't need to pinch too hard to make sure they are fully pinched. You can also buy barbless hooks. Owner makes these "No Escape" barbless hooks, which are also good. I use either those, or pinch the SSW all purpose hooks. Fishery officers mainly want to see an effort when checking barbless hooks. As long as they see that you have made an effort to do a good job, then it's all good.
How do you cure your roe so that it stays so nice on the hook haha, mine all fall off the skein after like 4 casts. Although for only having cured roe twice I don't think they're that bad
Here is my curing video: ruclips.net/video/PS6nZvzWlwQ/видео.html The drying part is critical. It's too soft because it didn't dry enough/properly. If you find your roe too soft, you can also tie them into bags like this: ruclips.net/video/D1MV1tNS4qs/видео.html Both roe chunks and roe bags work great for chinook and coho salmon.
@@FishingwithRod yeah I've been trying the roe bags, it makes the roe last a bit longer but in the end the roe just disintegrates or something 🤷. I guess I didn't dry them long enough, since I did watch your video on how to make them.
Yeah the drying part is bit of a learning curve and the amount of time requires really differs from one person to another, since humidity can vary etc. If it is not dry enough when you use it, just air dry it some more when you get home. More often than not you can salvage it. The roe you use in roe bags also doesn't have to be perfect, and they can work just as well as the roe pieces without the bags.
If you are repeatedly catching pinks, then you are not fishing in waters where springs are. That would be tip #1, change spots, cast a bit further out, look for deeper sections of the run, stay away from the schools of pinks. Use bait us has roe or BnR soft beads. Hi Rod, thanks for the great video. Is the chinook fishery always this good every year? I’ve been fishing in the canal for the last three weekends and caught chinook every time, really surprised and started wondering if this is because we are having a better than normal return this year, or I’m just having beginner’s luck. Also do you cure frozen eggs? I heard that they’re weaker than the fresh ones.
Hi Wade, we've had an exceptionally good return of chinook salmon in the Chilliwack/Vedder River due to some changes/increase to the productions. I've written a summary of these changes about a week ago and you can find it at: facebook.com/fishingwithrod/posts/399219724896850 I always cure my eggs fresh, then I freeze them. My frozen cured eggs can usually last a couple of years in the freezer.

Curious, with Coho, I see many using spoons, jigs, and bait like eggs whether real or artificial, but curious as to Chinook on the Vedder etc, is using eggs on floats the main way most target Chinook or are spoons also a "go to" way of catching them up there?
@@FishingwithRod Thanks Rod, that is what I thought and asked because i am considering a spinning reel purchase when throwing spoons/spinners and wasn't sure how often a Chinook might go for it rather than Coho that I would mostly be trying to target up there....thank you for your reply
Casting spoons and spinners can be really effective for coho, but you’re pretty limited to when and where you can use that technique. For example, between September 1st and the end of October, I probably use my baitcasting/float setup 90% of the time while the remaining 10% is used for spinning.
Hey Rod 👋🏽 I really like your stuff! So Thanks for the Videos. We‘re are planing to make a fishing Trip to the Vedder River next year. Maybe you know a travel Rod for Float Fishing. Because the Transport Rates by plane are really high😫 And a float fishing set up in travelling size would be the cheapest way i think. Maybe you have some Information. Greatings from Germany👋🏽
Hi Christoph, sorry for not replying sooner. I know all about how expensive transporting fishing rods can be between here and Europe since I used to do that all the time when flying to Denmark via Frankfurt. 😂 Just recently, we had a Danish visitor who brought over a four piece baitcasting rod for float fishing and I thought it looks quite good. I'm asking him what brand it is (it's a pretty new company in Denmark I think) and will get back to you.
Hey Rod, Fellow fisherman here! Just wondered what section on the vedder your at around minute 14 of the video? Also would this be a good spot for fly fishing and if so what’s the best technic for fly? Thanks
Hi Vince, I don't identify the locations in the videos because they are watched by too many people. These spots are reasonably easy to figure out with some digging around. The lower section of the river from the Vedder Crossing down has many good fly fishing spots. I would find some pools where water is moderate to stagnant, they are more likely to hold coho salmon. As for techniques, someone else would have to answer that as I don't really fly fish too much for salmon. Good luck!
Would you say chinook season tapering off now? I haven't had a chance to catch a spring yet this season. I know coho is picking up but I don't want to miss a chance at my first spring!
Duncan, I would say the chinook salmon fishing is tapering off for sure. That said, you still have a good chance encountering one in the next couple of weeks. We even caught a big bright chinook salmon in early November back in 2007!
I absolutely love my Simms G3 Guide breathable waders. Here's a video of me talking about them: ruclips.net/video/wRV1cvLT6f8/видео.html They are not cheap, but you do get what you pay for. For wading boots, I have the Simms guide boots, but what I recommend is for you to go into the stores, and actually try out different brands and models until you find a pair which makes your feet happy. When it comes to boots, the more expensive ones aren't necessarily the best ones. Also for the waders, there are cheaper products available, Simms has a line of waders called Tributary which is worth looking into as well. With the G3 Guide waders I have, I don't feel like I am taking off a load of weight when I take these waders off at the end of the day. They are comfortable, and pretty durable if you take good care of them.
Hey Rod, great video as always! I landed a “jack” this year but it was 65cm and 7lb. I know on the paper it’s “adult chinook” but it more looked like jack to me. Do you think it’s big jack or small adult chinook? (That fish tasted so good though XD) Also I land quite bit of wild coho only 1 hatch so far I think it’s a good sign :) Thanks! Hope you’ll have good salmon season!
The hatchery manager and I had a conversation about this a couple weeks ago, that it's not unusual to we encounter specimens in these sizes. They can be either big jacks or small adults. This year there is a much higher abundance of them, which suggests that they are big jacks, from the doubling of productions in 2019. facebook.com/fishingwithrod/posts/399219724896850 Pretty good coho salmon fishing season so far. It's picking up now. 🙂
No gill netting going on in the river. There have actually been lots of big adults throughout this season. You're not seeing them in this video because I unintentionally don't target them as I am not fishing the type of water where the bigger ones swim in.
I usually use salmon roe which have been cured with Pautzke Bait's Fire Cure (red). I don't buy my roe, I usually get it from the fish I've caught from the previous year. You can certainly buy salmon roe for bait, from stores such as Berry's Bait and Tackle. You don't necessarily have to use roe. BnR soft beads have been amazing for getting bites, as you can see throughout this video. Roe curing: ruclips.net/video/PS6nZvzWlwQ/видео.html
There’s over 50km of fishable banks along the Vedder River, and four or five different spots are featured in this episode. I’d suggest that you just head out there, pick an access spot, walk and explore.
as someone who wants to get into fishing this season, where do people even find spots like these? I've been a couple times on the Vedder and it's always packed
Because in British Columbia we often refer to all chinook salmon as "springs". The correct term would be chinook jack, or fall chinook jack as you mentioned.
Here in BC, chinook salmon are commonly called springs, mostly because they are the first salmon species which enter the river, as early as March and April during spring time.
Great video and loved how you show parts of you not catching fish too. I see so many videos and photos on the river with piles of dead fish and I think that promotes it in a bad way.
That is a Moby Net. The model is called D&K Special. You can order it at any retail stores that carry Moby Net, or email Don from Moby's website to custom order it.
The entire river has fish in it now and fishing is excellent. What spots were productive in this video may not necessarily be productive now, you’d be more successful by exploring than following behind at where we have fished.
@@FishingwithRod yeah I have got one spot in mind. Been following your tips and videos for awhile and thought I asked. Keep up the great videos. Maybe I see u on the river one day

@@FishingwithRod Sad that foul hooking is the reality of salmon fishing as most salmon don't bite in fresh water! Why disturb the salmon at all, your adding to the pressure they already endure!
@@smithwesson8871 Salmon do bite in freshwater out of aggression. Individual anglers have little to no effect on the salmon population and the commercial fishermen that over fish actually cause the problems in the salmon population

Also I land quite bit of wild coho only 1 hatch so far I think it’s a good sign :)
Thanks!

Pretty good coho salmon fishing season so far. It's picking up now. 🙂
Thank you for the information !
And I just saw your post about coho, can’t wait to get out there on this weekend for some coho to go :)
What spot is that on the vedder
Swear I've seen you stumble there multiple times
😜😜😜
Must be some gillnets in the river no adults to be found eh?
No gill netting going on in the river. There have actually been lots of big adults throughout this season. You're not seeing them in this video because I unintentionally don't target them as I am not fishing the type of water where the bigger ones swim in.
@@FishingwithRod Intentionally or unintentionally?
Rod, what are you using for the bait and where to get it?
I usually use salmon roe which have been cured with Pautzke Bait's Fire Cure (red). I don't buy my roe, I usually get it from the fish I've caught from the previous year. You can certainly buy salmon roe for bait, from stores such as Berry's Bait and Tackle. You don't necessarily have to use roe. BnR soft beads have been amazing for getting bites, as you can see throughout this video.

what bait did you use beside roe for this video?
Just roe, and BnR soft beads.

Nice salmon bro
Thanks bro
Where is the spot at?
What month is this
Where is this location of the river? Is this place close or next to the hatchery?
There’s over 50km of fishable banks along the Vedder River, and four or five different spots are featured in this episode. I’d suggest that you just head out there, pick an access spot, walk and explore.
as someone who wants to get into fishing this season, where do people even find spots like these? I've been a couple times on the Vedder and it's always packed
Honestly, just walk a bit and quiet spots are readily available.
I walk but can only find spots where the water is 2 feet deep and moving faster than light lol
Yeah you want to be looking for the right waters. Walking speed, 3 to 5ft deep, different sizes of rocks from pebbles to head-sized rocks for cover.
@@joshreed7703 Sometimes that spot with no fish and 2 feet deep water will be packed with fish after just one rain.
Why are some of these fish called spring jack, when it’s the end of September..? Wouldn’t they be fall chinook..?
Because in British Columbia we often refer to all chinook salmon as "springs". The correct term would be chinook jack, or fall chinook jack as you mentioned.
You should try serpentine
Ok
Why do you call them spring jacks?
Here in BC, chinook salmon are commonly called springs, mostly because they are the first salmon species which enter the river, as early as March and April during spring time.
"curse is broken" lol
😅
Great video and loved how you show parts of you not catching fish too. I see so many videos and photos on the river with piles of dead fish and I think that promotes it in a bad way.
Thank you Jacob!
What type of net is that?
That is a Moby Net. The model is called D&K Special. You can order it at any retail stores that carry Moby Net, or email Don from Moby's website to custom order it.
Kom så TEAm Nina!
😅
Can you give me the exact location of your fishing site? Thank you

I know this is an old video but why would you not stay down river to net the fish instead of upriver? Let the fish swim in the net?
I don't really have an answer for you other than I should have net the fish downstream from the angler instead of upstream lol.
I’ve lost fish all morning and landed every one in the afternoon.
Need more sleep in the morning. 😉
Hello would u like to pm what location are u in. I am planning on going tomorrow morning so yeah.
Not really.
@@FishingwithRod fair enough
The entire river has fish in it now and fishing is excellent. What spots were productive in this video may not necessarily be productive now, you’d be more successful by exploring than following behind at where we have fished.
@@FishingwithRod yeah I have got one spot in mind. Been following your tips and videos for awhile and thought I asked. Keep up the great videos. Maybe I see u on the river one day
Good luck this weekend. There’s a lot of fish in the river now.
First ay!
Ay!
Apparently if i buy Simms waders then I am a poser. I don’t want to be a poser so I will start standing in the river with my Jean shorts…..
🤣
9th comment!
🏅🏅🏅
VEDDER RIVER should be closed, for salmon fishing
Thank you for sharing your incredibly reasonable POV. It was clearly well thought out.
Get a life of your own, stop dictating to others , and worry about yourself and your own impacts on wildlife thru your own day to day living requirements!
Boring
And yes, your opinion matters. 🤣
Again, clinical! Standing two feet out in waders, the vest, waders, hat "the play the roll fisherman"! Not promoting family fishing, more like Cabela's spokesman! Fishing should be cheap and fun! Watch on the hook fishing on you tube! True reel people with regular fishing equipment! Your another "play the roll fisherman" lose the "I think I am professional" fisherman and make fishing family fun like on the hook!! First and last visit!
Thanks for stopping by! 👋😆🤙
@@FishingwithRod Sad that foul hooking is the reality of salmon fishing as most salmon don't bite in fresh water! Why disturb the salmon at all, your adding to the pressure they already endure!
I thought that was your last visit?
Never seen someone be this salty about not being able to afford expensive fishing gear
@@smithwesson8871 Salmon do bite in freshwater out of aggression. Individual anglers have little to no effect on the salmon population and the commercial fishermen that over fish actually cause the problems in the salmon population
what kind of reel is the blue reel ?
That is an Islander Steelheader centerpin reel.
