Haven't heard of her? She's the original Effie in the original Broadway play Dreamgirls. She's amazing, she sang while Aretha's casket was being escorted out of the funeral. Only a voice like hers could send Aretha on home.

This was not a performance for Jennifer and many Christians who can relate especially ones of the American culture. This was an experience. This was perfect bc the Holy Spirit blessed used her. The audience wasn’t ready though and Jennifer was a head of her time with this rendition. They began to sell this Gospel Session VHS tapes and it became very popular in the many black Christian households. Jennifer was phenomenal with Walter Hawkins on the keys. Andrae Crouch directing and arranging. Gospel music royalty.

A little background on Jennifer Holliday from the Wikipedia: "She started her career on Broadway in musicals such as Dreamgirls (1981-83), Your Arms Too Short to Box with God (1980-1981) and later became a successful recording artist. She is best known for her debut single, the Dreamgirls number and rhythm-and-blues/pop hit, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", for which she won a Grammy in 1983. She also won a 1982 Tony Award for Dreamgirls...Among the acclaim was Holliday's sweep of awards in 1982, including the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, a Grammy Award for her recorded version of the song, and Drama Desk and Theater World awards for her acting performance. Jennifer Holliday originated the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls on Broadway in 1982 (If you like to "freak out" PLEASE check out her Tony award winning performance on The Tony Awards, here on RUclips). She won a Tony and a Grammy for the role. This performance was from a segment/concert she did with Paul Simon and Luther Vandross. This was around the time she had just played the gospel great Mahalia Jackson in a musical called "Sing Mahalia Sing". In this sone, she does a lot of riffs that Mahalia did (you should check her out too. An INCREDIBLE gospel singer..sang for Martin Luther King/civil rights, was in the movie "Imitation of Life") but Jennifer DEFINITELY has her own riffs as well. Jennifer went on to lose about 200 pounds after this video and still performs in concert, on TV and Broadway to this day. (Can you tell I'm an old school Jennifer Holliday fan? LOL)
