Toni, your list of books and descriptions of each are so comprehensive. Thank you, thank you! I have a few of these books and certainly agree with your reviews. Now I’m going to look for Michele Robinson’s Tunisian book.
I'm watching this three years later, but I wanted to thank you for sharing. I'm far enough along in crochet that I'd like to start designing my own projects and these book suggestions are empowering me to start.
Over the summer, I taught myself to crochet using RUclips videos because I wanted to make Amigurumi. I've got both Crochet Cafe and Whimsical Stitches. Needless to say, I've gotten hooked (pun intended) on other crochet makes and am now in the throes of a cardigan. I definitely want to buy a couple of the comprehensive books for beginners. Thanks Toni!
This is a great resource video, and I keep coming back to it. There are so many crochet books out right now, it can be very overwhelming to try and choose one. Especially when you're looking online, it's not easy to spot the difference between a glossy collection of a few patterns, and a true resource that you'll be learning from for a long time. Thanks for steering me in the right direction with these!
Thank u for this. I wanted to get some books on crochet just in case my internet goes out. But I didn't even know where to start. I don't have any books, I learned how to crochet from my high school receptionist and from RUclips. I definitely will watch this video again and plan to buy some
Donna Kooler's Encyclopedia of Crochet. I LOVE THIS BOOK. Its a great one to take someone from beginner to an intermediate/advanced level. It includes how to do all the basic stitches, how to do tunisian also. Diagrams for left and right handed. Has a great selection of row patterns and other projects in the back. It will also show you how to read pattern shorthand and how to read charted patterns. This is the book I have gifted most to others who want to increase their skills.
I don't know if it's possible, but I think I just fell into heaven. I LOVE each and every book here as each one got better and better full of sooo much information. Also, listening to you speak is so relaxing, not to mention informative. You have a truly musical way of explaining things that make it a pleasure to listen and learn from you. ALSO, I LOVE the color of your fingernail polish in this video!!!
Thank you! I'm a technique nerd and I love learning every technique out there! I'm pretty knowledgeable with knitting techniques but I have a lot to learn in crochet. I am adding a bunch of these books to my crafting library.
My all time favorite is 200 Crochet Blocks for Blankets, Throws & Afghans; Crochet Squares to Mix and Match by Jean Eaton. (Many post-its in the book!)
Ohmygosh, my sister in law bought me the Crochet Cafe book for Christmas! I'm glad to see someone else enjoys the book as much as I do, and of course, my sister in law is also a crocheter, so she gets me!!
FABULOUS1 I just purchased The Crochet Stitch Dictionary and have several others I want but just put on a wish list. Thanks Toni for an amazing detailed journey of these books.
I just bought “The Complete Crochet Course” because of this video 😉 You’re awesome Toni. I’m obsessed with your channel so much. I’m brand new to crocheting, only having done it for a month so far, but I love it.
This is a great list! Thank you for taking the time to break each one down. I only have 1 book, Crochet One Skein Wonders 101 Projects. Iove it because I have been gifted yarns and had no idea what to do with only 1 skein. But then I refer to my book and there's a project for every weight.
Thank you soooooo much for this review! I have been thinking about starting crochet for a while now, but I haven't been able to find any crochet books, I now have references for good books! Thank you so much!!!!!!
Great suggestions! I love the "One Skein Wonder" books. My teacher/mentor is published in it. Go Anastasia Popova! I also love Edie Ekman books. I too have a book on borders by her but it is a different title. I can't remember the name. Thanks for the video!
There’s a lot of patterns out there and we’re all used to screens. But having a handy physical dictionary to reference for crochet stuff is a luxury I really appreciate. Thanks for the recommendations!
Thanks for your reviews. Last year I bought a Tunisian crochet book on Amazon and was sadly disappointed. Made me nervous to buy more. The books that have pictures in the very beginning like a table of contents is so practical because you can pick your project at a glance.
I have Epsy's books and LOVE them!!! Remember looking through the Christmas Sears or Penneys toy catalogs? I had the same feeling with these adorable amigurumi books. I met some women who said they love to read cookbooks. I didn't think it was odd, though they told me they found it to be. But, I understand their addiction to it because I have it with granny square and crochet stitch books.
I've watched your videos in the past but I truly appreciated the interview you did with Furls. It was really inspiring. I've ALWAYS wanted to create a stitch or pattern and believe it or not it came to me the very next day!!!! I'm finishing the garment now. I just ordered a few of the books. Thank you so much for being such an encouragement to me and others.
I am brand new at crocheting so glad I found your channel especially this video. Very happy I subscribed. I know I am going to love every video!!!! Thank you for having me and giving me the tools I need to crochet. I already have macreme down!❤❤🐾🐾
Hey Toni - Thanks oh thanks for your recos! I've purchased a few of these books and am happily immersed. Just started crocheting in January and CAN. NOT. STOP. I can see my progress through the projects I've completed, from my slipper that looked like a Frankenshoe (haha) to a relatively decent tote bag. I like making mistakes and learning through them. I appreciate your knowledge and your super-nice video delivery. Yarn snob breakdowns especially informative. Thank you! x
Thanks Toni for the proper book reviews. It helps to get perspective from someone who has already tried them out. I have now ordered 2 of these from my local bookstore, cant wait to get them!
This was so fun and informative! I am new to tunisian crochet and was trying to decide which books to get! Now I want all the books you suggested! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for sharing these books! I have been looking at these books on Amazon. Now you have given me a guide to whic ones to get, again Thank you.💖🥰
I just got the Every Which Way Borders book for Christmas....I love it! There are several you mentioned that I have on my Amazon wish list, and after watching this, I will be adding a few more.
Great video! I LOVE Toft, and I have almost all her books. She has a bird book, doll, monster and dog book. As well as 4 mini amigurumi books. Another book I love is 3D Granny Squares, it’s super cute and someday I will make a blanket with all that inspiration! I’ll definitely be buying some of your recommended ones. Thanks!
Great review. I do not have any crochet books but I’m sure that I’ll be adding some of these to my library. Thank you, with your help I just may learn to be a good crocheter.
I've asked Santa for CROCHET EVERY WAY STITCH DICTIONARY, I hope that I will be able to start making clothing Next Year! Thanks for your Crochet book reviews. Cheers! Faye
Thank you for sharing your favourite books, I have always look for crochet books but ended up not buying any of them, as I’m not sure which one to get. I have learned so much from your channel, your explanation is so clear and precise, always looking forward to what you are going to show next, thank you. Dorothea -Singapore
I was gifted “Modern Crochet” last Christmas, and it absolutely lives up to the hype. My problem now is that I want to get most of the other books on this list!! Thanks for the comprehensive recommendations. I always look to your channel for reference and opinions because of your innate ability to understand and teach crochet techniques!!
I have the Granny Square Sourcebook. Saw it at Joann's because of its colorful cover (I'm one of those people who has a tendency to judge by the covers). I looooooooove it!
Hey Toni. I'm commenting from a different account than the one in which I'm subscribed - but I wanted to tell you that this is an excellent presentation. Thank you so much for the extent to which you obviously prepare each of your videos. I love that you jump right into content without a long tedious introduction. Your Yarn Snob reviews have been extremely helpful to me too. Love your hands! Love to watch you work. Thank you for being here for us all!
What a thoughtful compilation! Love! Thank you so much! Also - The number of things I have purchased to meet that *free shipping!* You're a girl after my own heart! 💜
I am obsessed with Crochet Every Way Stitch Dictionary by Dora. It was given to me for Christmas last year and is the reason I have too many design ideas and not enough time! It’s super inspiring! Thank you for putting this list together. I have like jotted down nearly all of them, and look forward to getting myself a copy.
I have 2 of the 14. Crochet stitch dictionary was the first book I bought when I first started learning to crochet and I’ve used it so much since then! I also have the Ultimate Crochet Bible! I’m Definitely going to check out a few more that you recommended here! Thanks for taking the time to put this together!!
Thanks for the nice review. I first saw the The New Tunisian Crochet when I checked it out from my local library and loved it and I was able to get the ebook version of the book since I haven't been able to get a reasonably priced used version of the book. I like Eddie Eckman's style of crochet books, I have her motif one which is really nice and easy to find motifs. I did consider getting the edging book.
I just found your channel. Holy cow what an awesome reference you are!! I'm a knitter first but have crocheted since I was small. Mostly I have used crochet for large projects like Afgans. Lately though I've seen so many amazing things on sites like Pinterest. Thank you so much for this video!! Im inspired to dive deeper into crochet.
I have seven of the books on your list and am looking forward to adding yours to my collection. I recently purchased " the new Crochet Stitich Dictionary" by Nele Braas and Eveline Hetty-Burkhart and have found several stitches that are new to me. Take a quick look on Amazon.
Thank you for sharing all of those books they look wonderful all of them. I wanted to give you credit for the create room that I ordered I won’t get it until February but it was the Friday Black Friday sale and I couldn’t give you credit for it but I so wanted to hey. I love you for all that you do
Yay!!! More crochet resources! I’ve felt stagnant for a while now. This list just lit up my day. Thanks for sharing your favorite “essentials,” Toni! I can’t wait to add some of these to my collection. I have the Erika Knight book, and just adore it. Her knitting book is equally lovely.
As an avid crocheter, I have LOTS of crochet book, but sad to say that I only have four from your list. However, you made some great recommendations, so I have another reason to go to the craft store:=) THANKS for sharing!!
Thank you Toni for sharing these book recommendations . I have been looking for these book. They are all are very used full for me. Because I am a beginners crochet. I hope I can learn for from these books. Thank you again 👍❤️
Thanks for this review! All the other books by Dora Ohrenstein are fantastic, too, especially when you want to crochet garments! But yes, the "Crochet Every Way" is special as it shows how to shape various patterns. As for stitch dictionaries I recommend the Harmony Guides (2 books on all in all 500 crochet stitches). Also, "older" books (max. 10 years) are worth a mention - books by designers Kristin Omdahl, Robyn Chachula and Doris Chan. There are two books about Turkish crocheted and beaded trims by Midori Nishida "The Beaded Edge" which are unique and very well done (an exact instruction on when to thread which bead!).
Thank you for the amount of time you must have spent making this video. Your reviews were so articulate and helpful. I have Simple Crocheting by Erika Knight (I was lucky to get a nearly new copy for 50 cent at a library book sale!) and agree 100 percent with your perspective on it. It has a sophisticated simplicity ; I actually find just flipping through the book calming!!
Thanks for the great rundown on a very interesting selection of books. I have the Tunisian Workshop and Edwards Menagerie books but there are now a couple more I would like to add to my collection. The Yarn Substitution book is very tempting right now.
Toni, Thank you so much for your comprehensive book list review. I am so inspired to get them all. I am new to the crochet world although my mum used to crochet and starch table and cabinet placements. I used to knit, but have switched over to crocheting. I have subscribed and going through your videos. 😅👍🏾 Ps. I am a woman of colour in Hong Kong😃
Yarn angels! Love that. They must be working their magic through this video. Thanks for the helpful reviews, Toni. I normally will check out interesting books on crochet and knitting from my local library but it’s online order and curbside pickup only now and for the foreseeable future so it’s good to have a list to look up since I can’t browse in person. I don’t buy many outright but I did buy Dora Orenstein’s Crocheter’s Skill Building Workshop and I’m seriously considering buying the new one you recommended as its gotten excellent reviews from many crochet teachers/influencers/designers including you, who I admire and trust. I’ve lost my crojo lately and maybe a good book on technique will inspire me. Thanks again for the video.
Toni, I have most of them! I would add the Crochet Answer Book by Lily Chin, The Crocheter’s Companion from Interweave, Kim Guzman’s Tunisian Crochet Stitch Guide(which looks like an old Mon Tricot stitch guide from the 1970’s). I love collecting books.
Great video! You highlighted the features and strengts of each book well! I'm going to take a look if I can buy one or two of the beginners books in my country but ultimately your explanation made me want to collect them all haha
Great review of crochet books! I’ve had a few of these in my cart at one point or another but never bought them because I wasn’t sure about their usefulness. After your helpful review, I’ll be investing in a few of them. 👍🏼💕💖💕

I was thinking the same but for Tunisian because she is an excellent teacher and there are very few books.
Toni, your list of books and descriptions of each are so comprehensive. Thank you, thank you! I have a few of these books and certainly agree with your reviews. Now I’m going to look for Michele Robinson’s Tunisian book.
I can recommend it. I bought it when it came out and it is still very useful.

Hello..
Your descriptive ability is exceptional and I love listening to you ❣️
This is the exact info I came to YT for today! Thank you so much for such a straightforward presentation. Of course now I want ALL of the books 🥰
Thank you. I need a good beginner book. Thank you

Beautiful Blankets, Afghans and Throws by Leonie Morgan is a fave book of mine also shows loads of edges to make!

I have your book.... that's a must in the favorite category
Thank you for this information. I need to get my book collection going.
new things for the christmas list haha 😂
Yesss! I received several of these as Christmas gifts over the years after dropping not so subtle hints, lol
