Besides we all know it's just going to move to something cheaper like cement Hardiplank or textured recycled plastics which both might be more hail resistant than vinyl. Mind you whatever you make it out of, you know hail could easily grow big enough to still damage it. Perhaps the strategy is to choose something that could be inexpensively replaced. There's a reason why most of the power lines along the Gulf coast are above ground on telephone poles.
You are completely wrong in my whole 20 years of living in Calgary this is the worst hail storm we got compared to 2018 we get hail but it’s rarely ever this bad

They are probably broken. And those solar panels can't be recycled so they will get tossed into the landfills. Those solar panels are are contributing to the population they are trying to avoid

I'd imagine that if they go to something like the old wooden siding, it will be some engineered wood hence a lot of resin, a lot of outgassing and quite flammable. You might be better off trying pressed mycelium siding...

Never buy a brand new car if you live in Calgary. Hail is a normal occurrence in Calgary and so your car will just get damaged and devalued quickly because of it. As for houses, make sure to get Stucco siding for more durability.

Hail can easily damage wood siding. Thats simple physics. We use to play karate chop the wood with these as kids. If a kid can do that a solid object that size falling at 9.8m per secocd squared most certainly would. You probably got a good location and are not exposed
If you're considering moving to Calgary and enjoy having a nice greenspace and gardens, move to EDMONTON instead! Calgary is notorious for very frequent hailstorms!

It all boils down to costs and the chance of such damage not occurring frequently tends to win out over spending more to be prepared.
It was strange Airdrie got a lot lighting and power flicker a few times, but then we just got rain and slowly died out. Usually when Calgary gets bad storm. We get it here too. I do agree ppl need stop using vinyl siding, should be using something more storm/hail proof.

Didn’t notice Cus has ac on and head phones. Then power went out for about 10 second. Went to go grab cell phone and power was back on. I Looked outs side and was just normal rain. But then we got several more loud claps thunder and lighting. Shook condo some more. Then 10 to 15 mins later. It’s was done. Lol. Normally hear storm coming. But this time was just BOOM on top of us then was gone. Lol.

The major insurance companies all pulled out of home insurance in Texas decades ago but some small local insurance companies stepped in with varying degrees of actually providing coverage. What we're seeing today with the NDP wanting to regulate insurance premiums and the conservatives wanting to allow insurance companies to increase their pricing is all because the insurance companies are now evaluating if Alberta is just too great a risk. Not providing coverage to everyone has been the main profit strategy of private insurance companies.
