@photographymatt Manual focus is available with the kit lenses yes, it's via the scroll-wheel on the back panel, and provides a magnified peaking while focusing to help you nail it. Works well, but it isn't especially elegant.
@drago433 No, it's not like saying "only megapixels mater". There are certain physics that come into play. I never EVER said anything about the pixel count, "bigger is almost always better" is purely about physical sensor size, which DOES have various significant benefits for achieving goals in producing images.... like, as I mentioned, being able to more easily achieve a significantly narrow depth of field which can isolate a subject and really make it stand out form the softened background.
@EchoKrome Agreed, I think the V1 looks better in that high sheen white than black... not as subtle though (then again, you should see the RED one!) The PEN's, NEX's and Nikon 1's each have their strong suits and weaknesses when directly compared, both in performance, lens selection, control and handling... All are great cameras in their own right, really. Picking between them when it comes to splashing the cash really is a matter of personal priorities.... and it's a bloody tough choice too.
As a matter of fact, I just reviewed the Ft-1 recently. And there's a "demo reel" type video with Nikon's basic 50mm prime when I was first testing the FT-1 before the full review.
@LOTRzagorath Easily... the PEN EP-3 is ever so slightly thinner and it has a standard hot-shoe, WITH an intelligent interface for advanced accessories.
This is the first time I have ever seen or heard Blunty. Where have I been? He is fantastic...so clever and witty as he delivers good info. I could watch him all day!
@Danaceb Brand new cameras, all new system of cameras in fact, lots of research and development costs to try an recoup (they've been working on the Nikon 1 system for half a decade apparently)... the price will come down, and I don't think it'll take too long for that to happen. Early adopters always pay the premium.
@CrazyCake49 Either "too may" or "not enough" depending on if I'm trying to decide which one to pick up for a photo-walk, or if I'm looking at something new and exciting ;)
@MADMANx511 Indeed, like I said near the start, while it's the "biggest" in it's class of mirrorless system cameras, calling it "big" would be quite in error.
Hi Blunty i recently bought a Nikon V1 and i noticed that most of my photos come out blurry. Even if i hold my hand really still it still blurs. Is there a setting i should switch it to? Sorry im a photography noob.
Blunty, Thank you so much for this review. I am just starting in photography and chose this as my 1st Camera upgrading from point and shoots. I had received a lot of negative opinions when I chose this instead of a DLSR. But for me DSLR's are too big of a step from point and shoots so I picked this as my companion as I explore and learn more about photography. Thanks again and more power to you!
@Lerineo I've not used the NEX7, but it's the lower models are superb. I've not used the FT1 yet (I'm actually getting one in for review very soon), but if you've invested in a lot of good F-Mount glass you may be better off with the V1 simply because of that. But really, it all depends on what your priorities are when it comes to various aspects of performance... and that's something only you can decide for yourself.
@MrLouisBrooks Not necessarily physically, but operationally... make it less complicated. And for the record, it's only marginally thicker than the EP-3, as near as makes no practical difference in fact.
@AmunTheGreat Nikon are letting me hang onto the V1 they sent me, it'll make things easier down the line when new lenses etc come through so I can give those a look too. As for the EP-3... it's a fantastic bit of kit. I love mine, and the latest lenses from Olympus for it are incredibly good.
Hi, does this take the old f-mount nikon lens and do you need an adapter for it. And how long can you shoot video with this camera at normal speed? thanks for your time
ps btw I forget the name but there is a product called the mini muff or something like that, that cuts back on wind. Its small and fluffy and sticks to the camera. Looks silly but works.
@Genericwizardguy Better in some ways; like dynamic range and low light performance... worse in others; like lack of full-on control and DOF ability, poorer selection of lenses (for now), feels more "point and shoot" than "pro gear" in use... if I had to pick which one I'd buy right now (if I hadn't already got both) it'd be a very hard decision to make. The V1 has a lot of potential to be wildly good fun once more exciting lenses arrive.
if this camera can do 30-60 fps in full resolution, does this mean that in the near future we can have videos higher than 1080p. i know its not all practical or necessary but it could help make sharper slow motion clips
@Blunty3000 The thing is that i'am used to the D700 and i don't won't to lose to much quality, and the v1 seems more like a beginners camera while the Nex 7 seems to be aiming at the "semi pro" users. So do would the f mount lenses make any difference with the small sensor?
I was at Homebush Sydney Olympic Park aquatic centre tonight and nikon guys were all over the place. There were big white posters with nothing but black writing on them saying things like "I am Unique", "I am Inspired" and "I am a Revolution". Im pretty sure they were filming an ad. Looks like they're gonna market the hell out of this thing.
@Xenphenik Yeah, the marketing is gonna hit high gear... Keep an eye out, Sydney bus stops and train stations etc. have had Nikon 1 posters all over the place since launch day a week ago. Will be interesting to see if they were shooting an ad... I've been loving almost all of the "I am..." Nikon tv ads (and in speaking to the Nikon people on my recent trip to China, I can tell you they're proud as hell of them too ;) ).
Hi Blunty, I'm checking out the prices between the V1 and J1. What I didn't quite understand is why the models coming with a 10mm lens are more expensive than the ones coming with 10-30mm. Isn't suppose to be the opposite ? Thanks !
Was wondering if the pictures are blurred when they are taken in a low light environment and the objects are moving since there is no flash? Thanks and great review!
@Blunty3000 oh right, similar to the compacts that allow manual focus. um I could live with that. thanks mate. :-) Would be interested to see how these two(j and v1) handle the adapter for nikon F mount lenses
@FUNNzilla I certainly do know the types you're talking about ;( and "You actually made me want a camera I had every reason to hate!" - Kooky isn't it, quirky little bugger surprised me too
Hey Blunty. I´m getting rid of my Canon 5D and a bunch of L lenses because it´s just so big and bulky I never bring it with me and I´m not that great a photographer. Witch one do you think is better Pentax Q ot the V1? Video is pretty important also. Thanks for a great channel. Jerry
After coming from just watching the DigitalRev review of the V1 and then watching Blunty's review I noticed that the both referred to the camera a tetris piece. Random..
Mine literally arrived an hour ago, and I've found that if you hit the 'Disp' button a few times it turns off the screen and only has the view finder on (still via proximity sensor) on - Dunno if this is a recent firmware update or not, but I thought I should say this anyway :)
Can you take timelapse photos (or even videos) with the nikon one like you can do with the Pentax Q? Until now I was looking for something in size of the Pentax Q but I am really impressed by the slow motion option of the nikon which seems to be completely missing in the Pentax.
The question I always have to ask when I see a new proprietary mirrorless camera is couldn't they have just gone for micro 4/3? Seriously, the only reason I havn't gotten a Pentax Q is that my other mirrorless lenses would be useless.
Hey quick question. How do you think it would do in low light for, say, a group portrait (particularly noise levels when compared to a 1/2.3" compact)? Thanks. :)
Thanx mate, I just ordered me the one with the 10-30. Need a P&S that fits in my pocket. Nice to have beside my set of DSLR's. Gonna get me the FT1 so I can use my glass. Any videos you made using the FT1 with primes?
One problem with how to advertise the camera is how cheap it often end up looking on stills. Ad-photos are mostly extremely smoothed out and got really high contrast, making the already minimalistic smooth design look pale and plasticy. But in a video like this it looks stunning! A perfect metal mix of retro with something sci-fi-isch, all in a small package. They really need video-ads and get stores to take them in, although I can see J1 and V1 becoming a rare thing to find there.
@Lerineo Like I said.. it all depends on what your priorities are when it comes to various aspects of performance... and that's something only YOU can decide for YOURSELF. *cough*takethehint*COUGH ;P
When I read the title I thought...ow here we go again do some camerabashing. But this review is actualy the best I seen/read about the V1. No bashing no fanboy stuff, thanks for sharing.
It's on sale in Amsterdam. And as a videographer who can,t get used to shoting with a DSLR camera I think it's a good choise. Thanks for the review. Gona pick it up tomorow.
"Let the camera do it's thing. Don't fiddle with it too much." That right there just changed my mind about buying one because I was actually considering it.
Hello . Nice Video. I'm new to this stuff and is there an external trigger or something to install on the accessory port that i can start recording or take a picture from far away on this camera ?
great review as per and I agree, I have no idea who this is for. CSCs are not usually this expensive and I can see alot of people willing to drop £800 on a camera thinking "I might just go for the d7000 instead". Saying that, after playing with the j1, I could see me going for the v1 when I need a decent smaller camera for traveling/days out when my d700 is just too bulky. Any idea if manual focus is possible at all with the kit lens blunty?
I like streetphotography alot, this is an realy perfect camera for it. Its autofocus is realy fast. Its more fun to shoot with than my nikon d700. People dont notice you and thats great! Try that with a big ass dslr!
Blunty, love your style. I have two of these V1's. I also have Nikon D5100. What would I prefer to lug around China (love the old water town 60klm from Shanghai, been there) all day? The V1 is not as light as the Sony NEX, but it (like Apple stuff) just works!. The Prime lens at 10mm f2.8 is nice too. Very squat and depth of field is classic with a field of view being 27mm equivalent.
Do you think they could have put a standard hot-shoe on this without sacrificing design? It looks from the video as though a standard hot-shoe wouldn't fit on the top at its current size. Other than that, really good review, and it looks like an awesome camera, especially for video. That second special mode it has reminds me of a feature in the latest iMovie, except doing it straight on the camera would be so much cooler!
This is a damn good review I really liked it, best review I've found on the internet! I'm considering buying the V1, to replace my Nikon D300S in certain situations. I really love that camera, but I'm searching for one who is a little bit smaller and lighter.
Good review this, sums up my feelings. I've ignored it for ages, then tried one at a wedding where a guest was waving it about and was pleasantly surprised
im interested in photography and im hunting for my first camera...like ever! i see you guys are pros and thats who i need advice from. Im researching this camera as my potential beginner first camera..i see you guys have amazing things to say about this product..any advice for me? thanx in advance :-)
wow! the slowmo looks very cool, hey blunty you should make a review of the sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V I've heard it is the best sony can offer on point and shoot cameras :D
I have to agree - BOTH Canon and Nikon load the price when kit is new, I use a canon s100 (paid £200 for it as it was being replaced by the s95) and am delighted. However were not talking a £500+ spend. Nikon have missed the both both on spec and price - 60 FPS ? Yep - for only 12 shots.... I ask you. Nikon will do better with their 1 series MK2 - I'm a camera nut and always look at what others are using when out and about and have NEVER seen a V1 or J1. Nikon 1 - the one that doesn't sell.....
@Noobstate I'm not sure about others, but I watch DRtv for comical value and maybe a little bit to see how the new cameras perform. Much like topgear...don't take it as a proper review :)
Nice review here, honest, hilarious at times AND very informative (not like certain other camera review channels, you know the ones im talkin about...). You actually made me want a camera I had every reason to hate!
@rml695 It'd definitely dominate your compact camera. The real question is the Sony NEX cameras: they have DSLR-sized sensors, so there's a real chance they might do better. But they also have bigger lenses and slightly bigger bodies, so it depends on just how badly you need that size. Nikon's bargain here, I think, is the J1 -- it's 90-95% of the V1 for considerably less money.
Hey, I just stumbled on to your review. I watch a lot of camera reviews and get extremely frustrated and feel I'm not necessarily better informed. Your review however is different. Excellent review. Thank you! Keep it up!
I have pro Nikon bodies and decided to pick up a V1 for when I'm just out and about (and don't want to lug around the big DSLRs). My thoughts so far: Well... I'm having a blast with it! Does it create D800-class images? No! But then again, very few cameras do! The ones that compare cost 10x as much (as the D800). The V1 takes great photos for what it is: a very portable mirrorless interchangeable lens system that always gets the shot. @mikeismad61: Have you ever SEEN a million dollars? I'm g
Nikon v1 is decent camera...i have it with 10mm/2.8 and18.5/18 and i really like it.But it may be better if it have dial for apeture and shutter speed.
Wow I want it now... Your review made me want this camera I only have a Sony Cyber Shot and it is kinda bad when I compare it to this... haha very bad compared to this. Now I need to actually go outside and pratice photography cause Im a noob in that field...
i still use the nikon 1 cameras in 2022, they are cool
I just bought one... White too...😊😊 still fits the same audience.. a good quality camera with some good control and excellent output.
@photographymatt Manual focus is available with the kit lenses yes, it's via the scroll-wheel on the back panel, and provides a magnified peaking while focusing to help you nail it. Works well, but it isn't especially elegant.

@CrazyCake49 Either "too may" or "not enough" depending on if I'm trying to decide which one to pick up for a photo-walk, or if I'm looking at something new and exciting ;)
Hi, the camera has the Vibration Reduction set to Active by default, try switching it to Normal, it might help with the blur.
@MADMANx511 Indeed, like I said near the start, while it's the "biggest" in it's class of mirrorless system cameras, calling it "big" would be quite in error.

Good review, good insight. ... What's funny is that Kai from DigitalRev also referred to this camera as a Tetrus piece.
I love mine, and the latest lenses from Olympus for it are incredibly good.
i'm still using it in 2021.. love this camera for street photography
@Blunty3000 That makes sense, but you'd think that it would be smaller than the EP-3, considering the the smaller sensor.
Hi, does this take the old f-mount nikon lens and do you need an adapter for it. And how long can you shoot video with this camera at normal speed? thanks for your time
Hi Blunty, would you find it as interesting, as I, to make a comparison between the Nikon 1 J3 and the Pentax Q7?
ps btw I forget the name but there is a product called the mini muff or something like that, that cuts back on wind. Its small and fluffy and sticks to the camera. Looks silly but works.

sooo, i watch your reviews on products i have no desire to purchase.... that is testament to how good your reviews are.
if this camera can do 30-60 fps in full resolution, does this mean that in the near future we can have videos higher than 1080p. i know its not all practical or necessary but it could help make sharper slow motion clips
An excellent unbiased camera review. I wish more reviewers were like this.
Nice video. Thanks. Are you still using the camera? How do you find it after a period of time?
@Blunty3000 The thing is that i'am used to the D700 and i don't won't to lose to much quality, and the v1 seems more like a beginners camera while the Nex 7 seems to be aiming at the "semi pro" users. So do would the f mount lenses make any difference with the small sensor?

What lens are u using for the v1 and can it record video
@Xenphenik Yeah, the marketing is gonna hit high gear... Keep an eye out, Sydney bus stops and train stations etc. have had Nikon 1 posters all over the place since launch day a week ago. Will be interesting to see if they were shooting an ad... I've been loving almost all of the "I am..." @SgtMcNasty You're in luck. I have extensive reviews of both cameras. Watch them, then make up your own mind on what suits you best.
Hi Blunty, I'm checking out the prices between the V1 and J1. What I didn't quite understand is why the models coming with a 10mm lens are more expensive than the ones coming with 10-30mm. Isn't suppose to be the opposite ? Thanks !

Thanks and great review!
I love how your reviews are edited. They are really good.
@Blunty3000 oh right, similar to the compacts that allow manual focus. um I could live with that. thanks mate. :-) Would be interested to see how these two(j and v1) handle the adapter for nikon F mount lenses
Hi Blunty, what kit lenses did you use in this report? (the pix in China) was that the pancake 2.8 10 or the 10-30?
@FUNNzilla I certainly do know the types you're talking about ;( and "You actually made me want a camera I had every reason to hate!" - Kooky isn't it, quirky little bugger surprised me too
I gotta say it....
In your opinion how does this stack up against your EP-3?
hay Blunty, how many camera's do you own from this date?
Hey Blunty. I´m getting rid of my Canon 5D and a bunch of L lenses because it´s just so big and bulky I never bring it with me and I´m not that great a photographer.
Witch one do you think is better Pentax Q ot the V1?
Video is pretty important also.
Thanks for a great channel.
Jerry
My mum is getting me a new camera for christmas but can't decide which one to chose ether nikkon or the new samsung.
Hey there ! do any of you know if any lens with a focus ring that is not 800 bucks is gonna come out soon for this system ?
After coming from just watching the DigitalRev review of the V1 and then watching Blunty's review I noticed that the both referred to the camera a tetris piece. Random..

Hi, Blunty! so if I'm riding my Bike or Skate Board and I'm recording do you know if it will make that horrible wind noise?
How are the macro shots?
Thanx mate, I just ordered me the one with the 10-30. Need a P&S that fits in my pocket. Nice to have beside my set of DSLR's. Gonna get me the FT1 so I can use my glass. Any videos you made using the FT1 with primes?
So blunty, i love your videos but which one should i choose? I have Nikkor lenses but no sony so should i choose a Nex 7 or a v1 with a ft1 adapter?
*cough*takethehint*COUGH ;P
i've been looking at reviews and photos taken with the Nikon and this video just sealed the deal, I can't wait to get this tomorrow!
Any idea if manual focus is possible at all with the kit lens blunty?
tempted to get this for a walkabout camera, its not too expensive on amazon at the moment
Nice review sir. I'm planning on buying a mirrorless camera. Do you recommend this over the nikon j1? Thanks!
i feel like he insults me several times... now i'm self conscience about my squishy eyes.
how much is it in euros?
Yes it has a F Mount adapter, Blunty has done videos on it, check it out :)
I like streetphotography alot, this is an realy perfect camera for it. Its autofocus is realy fast.
Its more fun to shoot with than my nikon d700. People dont notice you and thats great! Try that with a big ass dslr!
It would be nice if you could get your hands on a Nikon 1 AW1!
your reviews are simply the best, thanks again Blunty!
Very squat and depth of field is classic with a field of view being 27mm equivalent.
that slow mo waterfall shot was really cool
Do you think they could have put a standard hot-shoe on this without sacrificing design? It looks from the video as though a standard hot-shoe wouldn't fit on the top at its current size.
Other than that, really good review, and it looks like an awesome camera, especially for video. That second special mode it has reminds me of a feature in the latest iMovie, except doing it straight on the camera would be so much cooler!
just bought this camera for 400 and it came with the 10mm and 10-30mm lens. very pleased with the canera!
@U23Drocs 10mp
im interested in photography and im hunting for my first camera...like ever! i see you guys are pros and thats who i need advice from. Im researching this camera as my potential beginner first camera..i see you guys have amazing things to say about this product..any advice for me? thanx in advance :-)
What about the J1 ? :(
i seriously love your reviews. where is your flickr?!
Cool..a nice honest well-rounded review. It seems that video could in fact be its strong point as opposed to it being a dedicated "photo" camera.
wow! the slowmo looks very cool, hey blunty you should make a review of the sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V I've heard it is the best sony can offer on point and shoot cameras :D
@matthewlane End result is what counts, not what you think you "look like" holding the sodding camera. Be less vain.
I have to agree - BOTH Canon and Nikon load the price when kit is new, I use a canon s100 (paid £200 for it as it was being replaced by the s95) and am delighted. @Noobstate I'm not sure about others, but I watch DRtv for comical value and maybe a little bit to see how the new cameras perform. Much like topgear...don't take it as a proper review :)
Just ordered this camera. Got it NIB for only $260! You can get it for a steal right now!
Nice review here, honest, hilarious at times AND very informative (not like certain other camera review channels, you know the ones im talkin about...). You actually made me want a camera I had every reason to hate!
Yes, thank you so much! I had someone else tell me this too. I am currently using a 4, which i'm most certain is the problem. Thank you again!
Exceedingly good review, thanks for taking the time and effort to put it together
Great review! Entertaining and informative. hat more could you ask for?

Thanks Blunty, this is the best review I've seen of the 1 series :)
Hey, I just stumbled on to your review. I watch a lot of camera reviews and get extremely frustrated and feel I'm not necessarily better informed. Your review however is different. Excellent review. Thank you! Keep it up!
Just simply an amazing review! Thank you Blunty!
I have pro Nikon bodies and decided to pick up a V1 for when I'm just out and about (and don't want to lug around the big DSLRs). My thoughts so far:
Well... I'm having a blast with it! Does it create D800-class images? No! But then again, very few cameras do! The ones that compare cost 10x as much (as the D800). The V1 takes great photos for what it is: a very portable mirrorless interchangeable lens system that always gets the shot.
