Nice stuff! I've been the main worship drummer at my church since 1986, and have quite a few scenarios to touch on. Sad to say for what ever reason, we haven't had a full band in over 12+ years and it's been my wife and I along with the Pastors wife singing to songs off the computer while I drum over it...not trax, but the actual song. Sometimes we use youtube with lyrics projected, other times it's power point words I've designed to CCLI standards. It works, but doesn't allow the Holy Spirit to freely move as much as a live band would...since the songs are in a music player que, but you do what you have to do. The times when we did have a band many, many years ago (yikes, we used hand held viewgraphs) I always ran into the problem of the older (LOL I'm 62 now still rocking on my double kick TD6 kit...and I'm NOT old) piano player (RIP) starting off the song by playing some faster melodic intro at the tempo the song actually would be played, but she would always retard the last couple of measures and then expect everyone to come back in at the actual tempo...how would someone deal with that? And on a different note, for those churches that want to use a click, how are the various sections determined, setup and areas broke down? I'm a lead singing drummer and couldn't follow "intro", "build", "chorus", etc verbal cues...I need to hear the music. My TD-6 has a click but it's not changeable on the fly to different setting without stopping each time, and hitting a few adjustments...in other words where do you get the premade clicks with intros, etc? Some worship bands we've had, the keyboard or guitar would be doing some improv and just go into a song and then I'd have to jump in and lock with bass player...how would a click even work to that scenario? Thanks
I'm 63 this year and been playing in church since 1987. I stopped playing about 15 years ago but was recently asked to join the praise team in my church (using a roland kit....I'm a Yamaha/Sabian sort of guy😆) I was initially very skeptical, not just the electronic kit, but also the use of ableton live, with backing tracks cues and click etc. Someone tried to convince me it was a sort of elaborate karaoke and not proper music. However now that we've had a basic insight into how it works, and a very good blow out rehearsal, I am sold on the thing. Can you play to a click? It always sorts out the arguments about who is rushing and who is dragging, its a shock to some people's egos.....When you are on that click you dont even notice it any more. Essentially the person operating the live tracks/loops is a sort of live sound mixing engineer they can make alterations on the fly, drop instruments in and out etc. If you can recruit a godly bass player, or guitarist or whatever, the operator cuts out the bass or the guitar tracks so you have a live sound for them. If you havent eg a synth player, that track can be left in, if you want it. So you can easily tailor make a sonic picture suited for your particular circumstances. The verbal cues are just that, someone speaks eg, "verse-1-2-3-4, no different than someone doing hand motions to indicate what happen next....and everyone hears it at exactly the same time. I'd say if you get the opportunity, keep an open mind and give it a go👍. I was very pleasantly surprised how it gave much more confidence and zip to the entire team, which had become a little tired.
Hey, this was very helpful. I'm trying to learn the drums for church right now online but it seems so hard. If I use worship beats and fills that you show, do you think that I can use it for any worship song? Thanks!
You are a great teacher for understanding the needs of learner. God bless you more.
Thank you! I am currently teaching myself to play drums for my church worship team and this channel has been a blessing.
