There is a plugin called a "De-esser". That is what he would need to use to rid that problem. And for you Nick, you might consider a soft-clipper & or a limiter/compressor so that you aren't clipping/red barring so that you can avoid distortion whenever you get too close to the mic (incase you were wondering why that happens :)
