    Prior to week 5 of the 1986 NFL season, when the Minnesota Vikings were set to take on the Chicago Bears, Vikings QB Tommy Kramer conducted an interview with a Chicago radio station where he decided to bash his defense, as in, the number one defense in the NFL, and call them all terrible. The reason he did that? Well... it may surprise you

  • @weegeemike
    @weegeemike 22 дня назад +7

    Poor Kramer. The guy could never catch a break. He was a highly talented QB but could never reach his full potential or have sustained success because of bad injury luck. Then, the guy embarrassed himself in front of a large radio audience while being exhausted to the point of delusio, trying to be a good parent and nurse his infant child back to health. Kramer is definitely one of the biggest and most overlooked "what ifs" in the history of the NFL. They say the Vikings are cursed, and poor Tommy Kramer seemed to have been impacted by the supposed curse more than any other single Vikings player.

    • @ckobo84
      @ckobo84 18 дней назад

      The team was finally stacked with talent ...thanks largely to the collapse of the USFL, but Kramer just couldn't stay healthy. Coach Jerry Burns liked to play 6 different running backs every game for some reason. Herschel Walker actually had the exact same average per carry with the Vikings as he did with Dallas, but Burns would never commit to one single back. Don't know if they would have been any better if Walker got all the carries, but for what you gave up you got to do it.

  • @Jason_Maier
    @Jason_Maier 23 дня назад +11

    At least he had a 100% valid excuse.
    Also in 1986, Tommy Kramer threw for 490 yards against the Redskins; which the Vikings lost 44-38 in overtime. It really shouldn't have gone to OT as Redskins kicker Max Zendejas (who replaced the released Mark Mosely, and MZ would then be replaced by Jess Atkinson. Even punter Steve Cox took a turn kicking field goals) not only missed a field goal; but also missed ...... 3 extra points. No JG9, I am not making that up.

    • @johncate9541
      @johncate9541 22 дня назад +1

      No one who ever saw that game will ever forget it. Max Zendejas as a college kicker was a stud. In the NFL, he was a total dud.

    • @Jason_Maier
      @Jason_Maier 22 дня назад

      @johncate9541 Well to be somewhat fair; kickers in College football had a wider goalpost until 1992 (it was 23 feet/4 inches in college) and could kick from a tee until 1989. And the hashmarks were farther apart (53 feet/4 inches apart until being narrowed to 40 feet in 1993).

    • @aaronholcomb237
      @aaronholcomb237 21 день назад

      Zendejas led the league with 5 missed extra points. Atkinson only kicked in the finale against the Eagles and the playoffs. A missed XP cost them the game against the Broncos IIRC in the next to last game. I remembered Cox trying the longer field goals for Washington. He made 3 such kicks.

    You gotta be careful with your hindsight. The lions, the steelers, the bucs, and the packers were all bad teams back in 1986. They didn't play a good team yet. That said, Chris Doleman and Keith Millard were monsters in the 80's

    • @MrSirMang
      @MrSirMang 18 дней назад +1

      Those teams won a combined 17 games on the year. They were cremepuffs. And the Vikings D was awful prior to that season so Kramer probably thought it was a mirage with how good the D played and the fact that the teams they played with all bottom feeders. The Vikings benefitted from playing the Lions, Bucs and Packers for more than a third of their season. BTW their offense was better in points and yards than their defense on the year.

The day started out fairly warm but by the 2nd half it had turned cold and we were under dressed. We talked about leaving and walking over to the old Thunderbird hotel where my friends mom was waiting during the game. But we decided to stick it out and we were so glad we did, the hail mary to Rashad happened right in front of us and we went wild. I still have my ticket stub from that game.

    Kramer played for Rice back when they were in the power conference, the southwest conference. Unfortunately, they're the Vanderbilt of that conference plus their stadium is way too big. Him, Bert Emanuel, Larry Izzo, and ND Kalu were amongst notable nfl players from Rice. Few others i could think of are Jarrett Dillard who played for the Jags over a decade ago and recently Luke McCaffrey was a day 2 pick.

Have you ever been so drunk that you form the words in your mouth and then you just kind of spit them out ? That’s the kind of shape he was in, early in the AM. He was absolutely blotto drunk . The radio guys asked about Kramer’s stint in rehab too, which was the year before. Kramer wouldn’t touch it, only saying it was “Too painful. Too painful.” I hope a tape of that interview resurfaces. Tommy kramer is and will Remain one of my favorite Minnesota, vikings quarterbacks of all time. But to tell the truth, if you don't already know that 2 minute Tommy was a huge drunk, he will admit to himself and he wasn't sleep, he was drunk.
    We've all been twere, we were drunk texting. Are drunk calling in the middle of the night?Shut only be too hard on the man but that probably is ninety nine percent of what happened

    I've met him a few times at my lake place in Mora, MN. He can definitely hold his own with alcohol and had a pretty attractive lady with him with t shirts he would sign and pass out to people. Being a long time Viking fan he is one of few quarterbacks they've had that didn't completely stink, it Christian Ponder. He was cool and I've had good football talks with him on more than one occasion

    Loved Kramer. But farve was the best QB we ever had. Not even close. The NFL screwed him and MN GIVING THE SUPERBOWL TO NEW ORLEANS. PC WAS THE TERM NOW IT IS DIVERSITY EQUITY AND RACISM.
    WE HAVE MAJOR ISSUES.

    Kramer was a drunk. I am not sure if he ever sobered up. He is still in town but not really involved with the team. Just some social media sites. And bar events. Draft party's stuff like that. I bet he was drunk or hung over. He was out clubbing all the time. I saw him and Ricky Young at the OZ on St Patrick's day . He was a prick.😅

    Just think in 1979 Viking could've drafted Montana in the 2nd Round rather than Dave Huffman and probably Draft Huffman in the 3rd round rather than Steve Dils the next QB drafted after Montana... 1982 Draft Coulda woulda shoulda drafted Marcus Allen rather than Disc Derrin Nelson. Always wonder the direction if they went that direction?
    FYI he was a drunk
