  • 4oz of orange oil plus one gallon of water should take out most fire ant nests without poisoning your garden, grass, or plants in containers.
Here in Zone 8B, I'm doing a little zone pushing, which means I need to prepare my tropical plants for winter with heat lamps in my garage, by killing fireants, termites, and other pests in their containers.
Hope you find this video helpful, and thanks again for watching Austin Texas Gardening!

Thank you for this!!! My son and I are creating a garden for an unschooling project. We’re in New Braunfels. I’ve never does this before, but I foresee this being and issue. We get many mounds every time it rains. Would this work for a raised bed and any type of plant?

I use orange oil cut with water on my raised bed fire ant mounds all the time, that’s isn’t to say it won’t have any effect on your plants, the orange oil can poison, or burn your plants if you use too much, but that’s better than letting fire ants feast on your harvest. For example, I recently had some orange oil on ants that moved in on my radish mounds, and the radishes died in the area, but so did all the fire ants. I lost probably three or four radishes.

But you didn’t show or talk about how you applied it…

The application part didnt turn out well on film, and I wanted to keep the video short, but essentially i just poured a half gallon of solution down the pineapple crown's funnel, and the other half topically on the ant nest near the base of the plant

I’ve never tried it, but I’ve found on Google that while clove oil may work, it is toxic to cats and dogs, so keep that in mind
