Great update. I kept a couple of African Mantis last summer ( my first time having mantis as a pet. My daughter lives with me and unfortunately her cat managed to knock one of their enclosure over and get one of them. I had their enclosure on the top shelf of the wife’s China cupboard (over a 6 foot jump and protected by walls on the sides and the back). After that I put a glass front on the shelf and didn’t have any other cat problems. The mantis on his last molt for some reason chose a branch that was a little too close to the bottom of his enclosure ( every other time he molted from the top branch and never had a problem. ). I came home from work and noticed that he was touching the bottom of the enclosure with the end of his butt and wings. I knew that he probably wouldn’t survive if I didn’t get him up from the floor so he could finish getting out of his old molt I extremely carefully raised the branch he was hanging from making sure I did as little damage to his wings and bottom. Unfortunately the ends of his wings were deformed a bit and he couldn’t really fly worth sh*t but he did survive and was given a new name “Squiggy cause his wing tips were all squiggy at their ends.
I am thinking about getting another mantis this summer but I want to make a super safe enclosure first. I am from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦 so mantis definitely find our winters a bit to cold.

I think when they moult too low down there just isnt much you can do, not sure why they would choose to do that but i've read that sometimes mantids that aren't seeking higher ground require more misting (theyre hanging out in the lower regions where its more humid). Of course this is species dependent too. Sometimes its just one of those things! i've had a few with wing issues but they can usually get along just find so glad squiggy still had a successful adulthood! Do it, get another theyre such amazing pets and so easy to keep for the most part!

Maybe in the future! I'm having a move around soon to try and establish how much room i've got left for some more critters! The assassin bugs are brilliant so wouldnt mind some more i'll let you know if i have the space!!
