One of the nicest, most sincere artists I ever worked with. I'd been a huge fan since "We Got By," and had a personal dream fulfilled in the early 90's, when he came to our town for a Pops concert. Spent every rehearsal break with Al (we were both cigarette smokers back then), and got to spend prob about 45 minutes with him, one-on-one, just the two of us. Deep talk with a very spiritual brother. I've met a lot of famous people over the years, but Al was the kind who made you forget about his fame. For that weekend, he was just My Pal Al. At the dress rehearsal, I asked him if he'd consent to give me his autograph- something I almost NEVER do. "Of course!" he said. At the post-concert reception line, he saw me hanging back (I always let the paying concertgoers have their time with the guest artists), and told the ushers to bring me up. I showed him two albums: "All Fly Home," a MFSL half-speed original master recording on 180g. vinyl, and my old beat-up copy of "We got By." Al took one look at that old, battered green-colored album cover and said: "You weren't kidding when you said you were a fan from way back!" (It was his first national commercial release). Then he said: "I'll write on the new one. I think we should keep the old one just the way it is. Because, if you hadn't bought the old one, I'd have never produced the new one." And then he gave me the biggest, most heartfelt hug you could imagine. Gotta admit, I choked up a bit in front of all those people. It was a night I'll never forget.
Al and George, a musical marriage made in Heaven. Bless them Both. May George always rest in his Heavenly Fathers arms as we remember his musical and life's contributions to us all and may Al continue to Bless us now always with his beautiful artistry. Love you both forever!!!
Thanks for posting this! It has been a healing presence as background music for the past several weeks...Al and George were phenomenal together and separately. Their spirits beam down, over and around!
