As much as this gets a bad rap for being one of the most terrible black sitcoms in history, I must say this is still refreshing to see due to the fact that *now* we as black folks don't have any black shows nor movies that allow black kids or "adult kids" to escape and suspend our disbelief. Meaning shows that have us as main characters and having a large cast of black people just being fanciful and creative. All of our shows and movies in this day and time are basically all about relationships and racism. Two very serious topics. It's like we can't take a break away from that for a while and be crazy and have fun!!! Thas why I refuse to condemn this and the fun movies that Robert Townsend made, because at least then, we were able to use our imaginations and be silly for a change. Why should white folk continue to have all the fun?!!
Being a late 80's baby and growing up in the 90's and early 00's brought me here. I remember watching the Homeboys in outer space pilot when it premiered on UPN in fall 1996 at 8 years old.
Late 80s baby here too, that just found this show - but it's _so nostalgic_ lol It's unfortunate there's just one season because it's got its charm; it respects the sci-fi genre but doesn't take itself too seriously and tries to have fun.
This is a lot better than the actual first episode, it’s like they looked at this and said can you remake this and make it totally not funny and awkward?
I agree. This show needs a reboot as the kids, like myself who was watching this show while doing chemistry homework grew up, became scientist and had their own kids. There are alot more minorities into science and research now, so it'll have a better population in today's market.
The premise of this is actually interesting. I mean think about it; what if modern black culture (meaning mannerisms, Ebonics, music, and fashion) is so influential and prolific that it survives for centuries? What if the social bias black people face that forced us to develop this type of culture never actually ends, even after humanity ventures out into the galaxy? That’s essentially the underlying premise here that we don’t see. If some actually good black sci-fi and comedic writers got on it, it would probably be a good show
Yeah it was a time when people had a goofy sense of humor and didn't take things seriously. I call it the good ole days.. the 90's. Looking back the show is trash. Today funny shows are verboten. Cause my feelings😭
Tiberius was Captain Kirk's middle name btw. Kevin Michael Richardson does a TON of cartoon voices. This is like an "In Living Color" skit gone horribly horribly wrong. 50,000 Shatnibs, WTF?
Haven't watched their podcast, but what's wrong with this show??? It's like a black TV show that was made for people who are in to Sci fi, but also black culture... Think of it like a black spaceballs... If you haven't watched spaceballs then you won't get the show.... I wish we had more Sci fi shows like this now, but rn Rick and morty is a current show that relates to the same type crowd of people, except it's a cartoon and the characters are white instead of black. I'm a black scientist and trust me, there are alot of people in the world who are very much into Sci fi comedies and wish there were more. On top of that, being a person of color, I wish there were more for people of color as well... 🤷🏾♂️
90s baby, but never heard of this show until an ad came up for “Worst TVs Shows Ever Made” few days ago, so you know I had to give it a shot .. umm think I stumbled upon gold 😳 that was amazing
I agree. The transition from Mel Jackson to Darryl Bell kind of remind me of the transition from Eric Stolz to Michael J Fox as Marty McFly from Back To The Future. Eric Stolz, like Mel Jackson was more serious and had a much more masculine frame compared to Michael J Fox as Marty and Darryl as Morris Clay on Homeboys in Outer Space. Mel Jackson had more potential. I think they choose Darryl Bell because he actually resembles Morris Day the singer hence Bell played Morris CLAY.
Phillip Redden I agree but I still watched the whole thing. I think the characters were too alike. Ideally it seems like the pitch was Malcom and Eddie in space. But it's a pilot so I don't expect much
It wasn't the best but I liked it, hence the reason I'm watching it on RUclips... Sci fi comedies have a specific crowd that they appeal to... Think about spaceballs--but black. I can easily see how this show was pitched to producers and why they aired it. Honestly, I feel like it hit the spot because I'm a scientist and I like it and so do most of my friends who are black... I also like big bang theory and Rick and morty just to give you perspective... I feel like the only reason this show wasn't as popular is because its a black show... To clarify, I mean it's a show for minorities (scientists) in an already minority population. Shows like big bang theory get over that by having a diverse cast. But even they caught some heat at times when people complained that they didn't incorporate Raj (Indian) and Howard (Jewish) enough, so in later episodes the show showed more of them and their families to emphasize that although they are scientist, they still love their unique cultures. Besides that, most other Sci fi comedies are cartoons. 🤷🏾♂️
Same... I wish their were more Sci fi comedies today... Just watched spaceballs the other day and made me feel like watching some of these old episodes.
This show was actually better than some people like to remember but people like Bill Cosby called it out for being too stereotypical (which it was). A couple of brothers in outer space rolling in a hooptie cruising the galaxies getting into mischief that was very cool to me back then. I like the Darryl/Flex actor combination but Mel seemed solid in this unaired pilot but I guess the directors may have wanted a bigger name at the time. Kevin Michael Richardson as Vashti. Rhona Bennett as the sassy computer lady. Paulette Braxton as an intergalactic bounty hunter. It had an unknown Michael Colyar as Milky Ray plus Gary Coleman, Erik Estrada, Little Richard, Burt Ward, Sherman Hemsley, Kimberly Huie, James Doohan, George Takei, Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs, Casey Kasem, Antonio Fargas guest starred in some episodes. The writing was at most times highly questionable but with better writing, script development who knows. In 2019 this might be a good tv series idea with the right production.
Melody, that’s not what we do. I will put up one or two episodes as samples. Other channels have more episodes, but our intention is not to violate. If you google around you might find collectors selling DVD sets of older shows. If we share one or two episodes, it piques interest. Putting whole series up devalues the commercial prospects to the rights holder and certainly makes it less likely for a legitimate commercial release.
ngl i love this pilot it’s kinda corny but in a good way 😭😭 they should remake it today BUT keeping it fun without adding any trauma like most “comedies” today.
@@CoolGobyFish except tyler perry shows were hilarious and had depth, this one has absolutely zero depth, it's tasteless, brainless, insulting, offensive and despicable, a tv show can offensive, hilarous and funny, beavis and butthead, the simpsons and the man show (the jimmy kimmel era) proved that, but the key thing is a tv show has to be funny.
