for me it interesting to see how different yet similar gm is to bmw. in retro spect its just nuts and bolts at the end of the day. and if your repair manual is as vague as robs in the video, then i feel your pain
Nothing beats a Rob Dahm video. Can't wait to see what you do this time. Edit: It is better to do things right, the first time, if you can. At least you didn't do anything major, damage wise that is. I've scraped a few things over the years because I got a little to gung ho. We live and learn.
Wow it's so good that the workshop let you work on the car in their workshop to cut down the labour charges. That's something I've never heard off before. Big shout out to that company
This is the exact reason you need to fight for right to repair. Being forced to used the manufacturers "certified" installers for extortionate amounts of money because they refuse to sell you the parts to fix your own car directly.
Absolutely! We definitely need right to repair... OEMs should be required to sell parts to repair vehicles they have manufactured to anyone that wants to pay for them... Now, does that mean that the part will be available... no, but that should also be a part of the right to repair laws that they be required to have availability on any part within a certain time period, or until they have provided specs to 3rd parties to manufacture other replacements.
I stand for right to repair, but this is one of those cases were safety is a legitimate concern. It's good to know that the certified repair people say that due to the damage, more needs to be repaired. At the end of the day though, I think that someone should have the final say on whether or not they want to take the risk to repair it to a lesser extent than what the manufacturer says is allowable.
No, this is different, this isn't about right to repair. This is a car with a potentially borked frame, the car is certified for a certain crash safety and they're allowed to work on it only if it meets those standards. You're driving on public roads with a potentially dangerous car otherwise. Yes, in this case it seems something very minor, but car safety has to be strict at least on the god damn frame welds. This isn't about right to repair otherwise the shop wouldn't have a) allowed Rob's people to disassemble the car to reduce the cost and b) allowed the repair at all.
But it is right to repair. What we have here is certified INSPECTORS, not certified sellers. It cost like 50 and they inspect it to make sure it's safe, not 10000 to install it for you because of a single pinch weld that got broken. Rob builds cars from the ground up, and that's fine, but he can't slot in a piece of frame rail and weld it himself and get it inspected because a specific company won't sell him a part. If it was a few 100 I'd not have a problem, the issue is because of this system they are able to charge anything they want. It takes away the ability to shop around for better price and creates a mini monopoly for this part as you can only get it from one place. You could go buy a crashed toyota or w/e and pull the bent frame out, bang out the panels and repaint and sell on a rebuilt title. This has nothing to do with safety, it's just a guise to get around monopoly laws imho. The shop is just the shop, they probably have to pay the manufacturer a ton for the privilege, hence the astronomical costs, and this gets passed onto the customer.
Very, very cool to watch! Cadillacs also have a cooled charging compartment inside the motorized storage compartment. It is nice, as phones that are charging while simultaneously running wireless CarPlay and making a call can get warm.
When I disassembled the interior for my WRX, I had a sharpie and blue masking tape ready so I wrote a note on the masking tape for where the parts go, stuck it on the back of it, and then got a baggie and a sticky note with the same note for all the spare parts. A bit more work, but it helps keep things organize and gives you parts when you need them, and you aren't left with the five remaining screws going "where does this go?"
Yeah but then at the end of the project you won't have any bonus screws. How will you know if you're more efficient than the engineers who designed it if you can't sit back and think I could do it with six less
I started doing this a few years ago as well. It's so simple and cheap and only adds a few seconds to each part. Then a year later, you have ZERO issues putting things back together.
Can rotary swap anything. Can't tie down a box. Hahahaha good on your for showing us everything even the mistakes! You and the bros inspire a lot of people man!

I'm not a professional or anything but I would definitely do all the body work and paint before I put any of the interior in. It eliminates the possibility for damage
That would only be necessary if they had to paint the inside. Not the case. Just a ton of double sided tape, large rolls of plastic to tape it off so no over spray.
With modded cars, sometimes it's wise to build the car fully, iron out all the bugs, then pull it apart again and paint. Otherwise you can end up having to cut up your freshly painted car to get things working right. You saw (pun intended) what ended up happening to the last body of the 4 rotor lol...
