Hi Maya I am happy to read you are keen to help endangered species. However, as I learned the hard way, that also entails helping other humans who may have been disadvantaged say by the protection of rare species. In Central Africa for example the pygmoid indigenous people (Batwa and Bambuti) who lived in the same forest as the mountain gorillas were evicted from their traditional homes. They received no compensation, no land and very little help in adjusting to their new lives outside their forest home. Sadly this was something that Dian Fossey never understood - or even tried to understand! So, my advice to you Maya, is to learn as much as you can about the WHOLE environment and ecosystem surrounding the problems of a rare species you are fascinated by - political as well as social and biological. I used to tell my own students that this is "Conservation Management" This approach will be far better than just trying to 'save' any rare species! So, watch ALL of the fabulous David Attenborough programs on wildlife, volunteer at local parks and zoos to learn as much as you can - and NEVER lose the enthusiasm and dedication that you obviously have Maya! At almost age 82 it makes me so HAPPY to hear from people like you. Best wishes. Keep in touch and let me hear of your progress. We have left the youth of today with so many 'Challenges' - as my generation was so greedy and self centred! So, it is now up to you and others like Greta Thunberg - to shake up and wake up those who either cannot 'see' or have the wrong vested interests!
