- Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover.
I recently upgraded my laptop from Ubuntu 21.04 to Ubuntu 21.10. Unfortunately the upgrade failed, but I managed to recover and complete the upgrade from the terminal. This video goes step by step through how I fixed it. This may also help with other upgrades that have a similar problem, including upgrades to Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.10.
It involves opening a terminal session to see whether the upgrade was still running. I then rebooted, but after getting the same "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." error message then I had to boot into recovery mode.
After issuing multiple apt commands I was eventually able to fix the error and get to a working desktop. I then reinstalled the displaylink drivers needed for USB-C video and completed the install using the Ubuntu graphical update application.
I installed Firefox using the snap package (although probably better sticking with the debian dpkg version as the snap version is very slow to startup).

Thanks for sharing man. You are the best. Very calm and informative, while not promising anything...
Thank you so much! I had the bright idea to update my work PC during a working day and this saved me!
And the fact that you explain all in such a tranquil tone helped me calm myself!
Same here lol
dude same here LOL
Struggling on a Thursday :P
Thanks Man! You are a savior! I am new to linux environment so I faced this and you saved me :)
Thank you so much, I had an Ubuntu 18 and I upgraded to 20 successfully. However, when I was then upgrading to the 22's, I got this white screen of terror. But your video saved me!
Thank you so much! It worked perfectly here. You explain it very clearly, it was really helpful!
This also appears to work for updating from 20.04 to 22.04. Much appreciated!
Thank you So Much Man really saved me from losing my laptop 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Your solution worked! Thanks for sharing the video.
Thank you for the helpful presentation and video!
Thank you, mister, you saved my working day!
Thanks a lot! It worked here. You saved me!

Thank you sir, this was a life saver
I regret upgrading to 21.10 but thank you for the help
Man thank you so much!! And thanks to the Internet
You saved the day man, thanks
Superb.. IT Helps working..Thank You..
Great, just continuing dpkg and apt update, upgrade, dist-upgrade, fixing broken packages was helpful.
Ubuntu...argh. it never stops :)
Thank you so much. you just saved a soul smiles...
Gracias por tu vídeo, me salvaste la vida
Thank you for save my upcoming homework for Linux shell script!!!!
Thank you so much. My PC went to lock screen during upgrade 20.04 to 22.04, impossible to enter my password and stayed stuck for 4 hours. Had to hard switch-off which ended with the "Oh no" message. Turns out the tail /var/log/dpkg shows it stopped working on firefox upgrade. CTRL-Fx key to enter login, dpgk--configure -a and saw what the error was (ffmpeg issue). Made an apt autorepair as suggested then apt update and upgrade. and Voilà, I'm back ! Thanks again.
Thank you!
U saved my life ❤
thank you!
It's such a headache even after months have been passed after 20.10 that I decided to update.
After the update, zfs is no longer import on boot as well, took me half an hour to resolved.
You saved me!
You could summarize it to one sentence: "sudo apt upgrade" instead of making a 18 minutes video.
Yo, thanks. Too bad this had the happen at the end of my workday
Thanks. However, at the 7 min mark, after completing update and before logging it, he says reboot the system but gives no terminal screen directions. Is there a command to reboot? Thanks
To reboot from the terminal use
sudo reboot
Or
sudo shutdown -r now
Thanks!
Thanks! You saved my bacon tonight upgrading to the latest version I had the same errors and this worked for me.
Looks like a nice approach. Does it work for 22.04 uptade?
It's a fix for package install failing at a certain point regardless of Ubuntu version. I've heard of several people with the same problem on later versions.
Happened with me. I am on PopOS and updated through Pop Upgrade. It downloaded the packages and rebooted but stuck on logs for about 3 hrs. Then I booted into older kernel and did apt install and dpkg reconfigure.
Now I am able to run everything, but the system is unbearably slow. At first I thought that maybe it's an issue of KDE, So logged into GNOME, but same issue. Can you help ?
Performance problems can be hard to diagnose. The first tool I normally use is htop. That will show how busy your processor is and the processes that are using the most resources. Perhaps their is a process that is running incorrectly and using excessive resources.
@@PenguinTutor Booted into kernel 5.11 and is working fine.
Have you ever faced anything something like this ?
@@pandeyravidev That is something that can sometimes happen if there is a bug in some software (such as a daemon) that only impacts on certain versions of the kernel.
I'm on fedora 35/36, issue happened when updating to 36. But I can't do Ctrl + alt + f 3(no reaction). what to do!
Fedora will be different as it uses RPM (RedHat Package Manager) / yum instead of Dpkg / Apt.
On Fedora you can fix a package install using
yum history
get the transaction id then
yum history redo force-reinstall
Then try
yum update
But it's been a long time since I've used RPM so I don't know how effective that would be.
i try to ctrl alt and all the F´s but none of them worked :( im stuck here, you know if theres something more i can do?
In that case you will need to reboot, select recovery mode with root shell and then try the recovery from there.
At 04:25, which commands you used to reach that screen. Please help
If you are still in Ubuntu then you can try CTRL-ALT-F3 to get a terminal.
If not then reboot, which should put you at the Grub screen. If you've set boot to automatically boot to Ubuntu then you can hold down shift when booting to bring up the grub menu.
From the Grub Menu choose Ubuntu wth recover, then choose a root prompt.
I hope that helps.
It just says " a problem has occurred and the system can't recover " and there is no log out option
help me please!
Try Alt-F2 it Alt-F3 and see if you get a console. If not then you can hard reboot and choose recovery mode.
Did you resolve it
It didn't work for me. After using the apt --fix-broken install it errored me and said to try and run apt-get or apt --fix-missing?
Unfortunately it won't work for all problems. If the system has become corrupted then it may not be enough, but if it's just a failed install with the packages left in a reasonable state then it can recover from a number of different errors.
How could I solve this issue using live USB? Bcz Ctrl alt f3 is not working for me
I'd suggest trying to boot into recovery mode instead (see the Advanced Options from the Grub screen). If that is not successful it may be possible using a Live USB. You would need to open a shell, chroot to the / partition using your hard drive and try using apt from there.
If it is still failing then you may have a corrupt system and in that case it may be that it would be less time to re-install. Use the live system to backup all your data to another drive and then re-install using the existing partition.
My problem is that it's saying the I need to install a few more things but networking simply doesn't work (or I don't know how to fix it)
So both dpkg and apt --fix-broken doesn't work. Can anyone help? Thank you
Do you have a physical ethernet port, connecting by cable often works even if your wireless driver doesn't.
The alternative is that you can download files on a different computer, transfer by USB stick and then install using dpkg, but that can get very tedious if there are lots of dependencies that also need to be downloaded.
how do i get into recovery mode?
If Alt-F3 doesn't work and you reboot then there is an advanced option on the Grub menu which has an option for recovery mode.
@@PenguinTutoroh thanks man
I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on my VMWare machine, and it shows that screen. None of the options worked for me.
This video was specifically about upgrades rather than installs as it's fixing a failed package install.
Have you tried installing Ubuntu using the VMWare images that they provide?
Hello....Ctrl-alt-f3 cmd not working, pl suggest to me another way to fix it
In that case you may need to reboot and choose boot to recovery mode as shown at 18:19
My cntrl alt and f3 is not doing anything i tried pressing it not opening up my terminal
Depending upon your keyboard you may also need to press the Fn button as well.
If that still doesn't work then it sounds like a more serious problem.
You could try using a live disk and use rescue mode, but it may be that you need to reinstall.
Press Ctrl+Alt+F3 But my pc don't show terminal and any others option...how can i solve this??
You may also need to press the Fn button as well.
If that still doesn't work then it sounds like a more serious problem.
You could try using a live disk and use rescue mode, but it sounds like more than a few broken packages.
@@PenguinTutor I tried Ctrl+Alt+F3 with fn key but still showing the same error, could you please tell me what I can do
Unfortunately it sounds like your system isn't running currently. I suggest a re-install.
After pressing Ctrl alt f3 I am getting error. [Failed] Failed to start CUPS Scheduler
CUPS is just used for printing - so it shouldn't prevent the systems from running. Did it give you a shell so that you can issue commands? In which case you should be able to fix and install packages using apt. If not then you may need to reboot and try using system recovery instead.
Sorry, I restart and then, typed Esc, I can see only the UEFI boot menu whit those options :
ubuntu
2 : IDE CD
3 : IDE HDD
...but nothing about recovery mode
You should choose the HDD (as long as it allows that) and then it's the Grub boot menu where you can select recovery mode.
@@PenguinTutor thanks, but it was due to an incorrect BIOS setup. Now I have solved it and then, using your tutorial I have solved everything. So, double thank you ... heartily ❤
Plz help me I m waiting for ur reply
why firefox with snap?!??
This is a decision by Canonical and Mozilla and means that from Ubuntu 21.10 Firefox will be distributed by snap.
I don't know why they made that decision. My experience is that the startup time for Firefox on Ubuntu is incredibly slow, I don't know whether this is definately related to snap, but I suspect that may be part of the reason. Once it is running it is responsive, but the long startup time means I am seriously considering changing my default browser.
Didn't work for me. I did everything but It Just doesn't work
Unfortunately it won't fix every problem. It usually works if some packages are updated and others not. If it hasn't worked then you may have to reinstall the operating system.
Thank you!
Thank you!
What should I use for the login ?
