  • Mixing between a Gameboy running LSDJ and an M8 Tracker both playing the same song with similar sound design. Forgive my horrible mixing/fading skills. Listen with headphones to hear the differences in detail.
    Song is Cheeseburger Avenue by Disposable Planet.

    I understand you're doing a sort of scientific comparison but this as a DJ setup is pretty intriguing!

    Brilliant! M8 sounds better, but only because the bass is better defined. The Rev1 Gameboy always had better sound than the later models, but the M8 is a ultimately better as it can do so much more. Timothy Lamb is genius. Top tune. Love it!

    Good comparsion. I think Trash 80 put a lot of love into the m8, he has probably deep dived lsdj enough to write the wav algorithm enough. btw love those little mixers. Do miss the days of rocking with 2 DMGs and the little gemini mixer.

    That's an awesome comparison. Such a sweet track. The Gameboy does keep up with the Dirtywave, it's sweet that both of them are exactly synced and playing their respective parts well. Awesome track!

      thanks nmlstyl! trickiest part was trying to get the LSDJ WAV channel crunch to translate to the M8. But we need more LSDJ to M8 translations! I personally wan't to hear an M8 version of "Can't Stop Us" by Chipzel

    This song is so good... I'd love to know a bit more of what sounds you get out of which waveform. I know the basics but it's hard to know for me what the limitations of the GB were, so it's hard to create gameboy sounds with the M8! In any case, great great job!

    • @DisposablePlanet
      @DisposablePlanet  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! The song was first an LSDJ tune then transcribed to M8. I used all wavsynth with very little or no filters to keep that raw DMG sound. On the GB the bass is several instruments being alternated between on the wav channel with some pulse accents to give it some life during the bass solo. The rest is pulse instruments and noise drums with a sample for the snare layered over a noise envelope and a wav kick. The magic is in the arrangement however not the sound design for this particular tune so that’s why I think it translated well from LSDJ to m8

    Impressive and good comparison. One question: how did you recreate the noise channel of the game boy on the m8? Is there an equivalent instrument where the same values reproduce the same sounds (more or less) ? That's one of the things i really miss from the original lsdj and i didn't figure out how to recreate it properly. Thx

    • @DisposablePlanet
      @DisposablePlanet  Год назад +1

      Yes the M8 wavsynth has two noise oscillator options in addition to the waveforms. Pitched noise (which can be used to create the higher more metallic pitched values of the gameboy noise channel) and just Noise (which can be used to create the white noise). The values are not exactly equal sounding. It’s a sort of thing you need to recreate by ear in a “salt-and-pepper to taste” sort of way. The trickiest part of transcribing my Cheeseburger Avenue track to M8 was recreating the proper bass sound with cutoff automation in table as opposed to using the LSDJ Wav instrument to do that slight growlyness. The pulse instruments were easy to recreate.

    • @chrossbone
      @chrossbone Год назад +1

      @@DisposablePlanet Thx for the quick reply. I will try to figure out what i can do with the pitched noise and noise type oscillators and L/R panning. (I was soooo hoping there was a very convenient way of transcribing the lsdj noise to m8)... Your track is a very lively piece of music. Quite enjoyable.

    • @DisposablePlanet
      @DisposablePlanet  3 года назад +1

      I'm the opposite - I prefer the cleaner more easily separated bass on the M8 - but also the crunchiness on the DMG bass in this video is partly due to some differences in sound design - it was not possible to do a close one-to-one reproduction of the WAV channel like you can with the Pulse channels.

    • @DisposablePlanet
      @DisposablePlanet  3 года назад +1

      i think a built/bought DMG to GBC link cable with an arduinoboy pro hooked up to MIDI cable 3.5mm into M8 would do it - not sure if the MIDI type needs to be converted (M8 is type A i believe). Don't quote me heh - I want to try that setup too

    It looks like your high freq eq on the right is slightly higher than on the left channel. And your lows are slightly higher on the left than the right. It’s not a fair comparison unless they are exactly the same. Actually for sound comparison like this you should just leave the EQ flat so it’s not a factor at all…

    • @DisposablePlanet
      @DisposablePlanet  3 года назад +2

      You’re absolutely right - I probably should have titled this “Song Comparison” or “Sound Design comparison” because what I was trying to do was match the sound quality and feel of the song (which was composed and designed originally in LSDJ and then transcribed to M8 where the process of designing the sound is different). I was hoping if I matched it as closely as possible it would allow for any tiny differences to come to light. That is why the trim, EQ and limiter(on the M8) is different between both devices (those are the usual settings I would send it into my computer with to record)- to allow for the song to sound as close as possible on one device as it does on the other as opposed to comparing both with flat EQs. Maybe this was not communicated in the title or description.
