  • I thought I reacted to this one before, but I was mistaken! Coming into it, I didn't know what to expect, but there was a lot to discover. Nevertheless, it's a smashing tune and Moz soars on it. Oh, and Spencer Cobrin does too.
    Thanks for watching!

All people deserve a homeland of their own, its that simple. It’s the human right of ‘the right to self determination’ thats meant to be protected by the UN. People can call it far-right if they like, but many people who hold this view share leftist views like social healthcare and other social safety net policies. In fact, I’d argue that you cannot advocate for open borders AND a national health service, it overstrains the system and your constantly adding new patients that haven’t payed into the system to prop it up. A constant flow of mass immigration also depresses wages and increases demand on the housing market, thus driving the housing prices.
Just something to think about 🤷🏻‍♂️

Never understood the controversy about this song, and I'm about as left leaning as they come. Just brilliant lyrically and instrumentally. No one else in Pop could write and release a song like this except Moz.

    England for the English

  • @ravenknight1704

Despite the controversy, this song is not promoting The National Front but the opposite. I'm glad you picked up on Morrissey's tone of voice. David's family and friends are lamenting that they've "'lost' their boy" to the far right group. "England for the English" is in quotes, the slogan of the NF, repeated lamentably by the narrator. The notion of a National Front 'Disco' is meant to be laughably ridiculous, it also paints the NF as a group that preys on young people. One interesting interpretation of the song is that it's about David Bowie, who during the mid 70s became fixated with fascist mythology and Nazi imagery, even stating in an interview that he 'believe['s] very strongly in Fascism' and calling Hitler 'one of the first rock stars'. It's an interesting take but i'm not sure. Absolute belter of a song all in all!

Edit: I’ve just realised you’ve already reacted to ‘We’ll let you know’. There is another track from this album that you haven’t though, ‘Certain people I know’ it has a nice rockabilly sound and some quirky lyrics.

This is one of my favourite Morrissey songs; because you/ I [the listener] are required to think & not just take the lyrics at face value.
Personally I have always heard this song as a lament of a disenfranchised boy & his family. He says that life's opportunities are slipping away from him. And unfortunately he's fallen under the spell of the far right/ NF. Who offer a [distorted] explanation as to why his life seems so far out of reach.
Sadly the character David's story is not unique; many people have fallen for the far rights rhetoric & lies. Especially during times of economic crisis. I would love to say that the ideology of the NF is dead & buried in the UK.But you only have to look at our home secretaries rhetoric around an "invasion" on our shores. To see that the poisonous language of the far right has become mainstream in our politics!
Sadly we never seem to be able to fully free ourselves from.such poisonous language.
Whatever people's view of Morrissey may be these days. This a brilliant evocation of the sadness at lives lost to far right hate groups.

Morrissey himself is Right Wing, and nothing about the song is negative to the National Front. Indeed, the first few times Morrissey performed the song, he invited National Front members on to the stage. The song is simply about a friends who gets in to politics and starts moving with a new crowd. The singer never criticizes the National Front or their politics. He merely wonders if the confrontation they are preparing for is ever really going to happen and whether Davey will in fact get a chance to settle the score (which by the plain language implies that yes, the singer does believe there is a score to be settled).

Strange thing with Morrissey is that during his Smiths years he was catalogued on the left ring, writing about some fights usually defended by this side and he moved to US and he turned his view on the right.... Despite some could say he's popular with Mexican American community but most of them are strongly attach ed to their community. Seems he take this narrow minded...

Morrissey has always been right wing. People get confused because the media labels Thatcher "right wing" and Morrissey despised her. But the actual Right Wing (National Front and other Far Right Groups) all despised Thatcher too. The problem was the media was too unsophisticated to understand that Morrissey's disgust with Thatcher came from a Right Wing perspective, not a Left Wing one.

This is actually a good song but, unfortunately, the lyrics allow doubt to be cast on Morrissey's personal politics. His views on vegetarianism, the monarchy and Margaret Thatcher were plainly expressed, which caused some to ask why he was reluctant to properly address a violent and appallingly racist political faction. In retrospect, I think he'd regret allowing this and "Bengali in platforms" to be included as album tracks.
