Still one of the best Boring Bars ever produced ! WE used to square the Block decks 'parallel' to the mainline beforehand to ensure the Boring Bar would 'bore' as close to 90" to the mainline as possible. Just say'in, quite common the Block Decks are NOT parallel to the mainline from factory and quite often are out .007" to .010" or more 'end to end' from the mainline. "Boring" with a Carbide cutter on Cast Iron will result in 'fracturing' of the parent Cast Iron left behind in the Cylinder after cutting.... this 'fracturing' can be .004" to .005" deep.... and hence AERA, SAE, Piston Ring Manu's like Hastings, etc.,.... ALL used to reccommend an absolute 'minimum' of .003" be left for "HONING" to remove as much of that residual fracturing in the Cylinder Walls as possible.
Thank you. I was given one of these boring bars but I had no clue on how to operate it. I think with your help I will be able to..... I am familiar with bridgeport mills and lathes but a boring bar is new to me.
How are you i moved back to maine about 5 yrs ago I grew up here in Solon until 13 then moved to Florida central fl where that summer i met my dad's bro who owned a automotive machine shop on i went to work for him two days after and never looked back when i moved here i had to sell my shop and sold it as a complete lathe mill crank grinder boring bars valve and seat tooling exc I'm tryingbto recoop from that I should never done it ... I bought a couple pieces so far I acquired a soyluthbend mill a van norm 777 bore bar hall toledo seat grinder i grew up in a performance shop so do more performance builds it takes me forever to use a bore bar but once I get my system down I can cut a square to crank and deck surface round hole when i bought this boring bar i searched for the tool kit and hold downs which I usually use tool steel 2 inch bar and mount the hold down threw the main saddle . Do you have enough parts or a tool kit for sale i always heard of people looking for them i always said why would you buy a bore bar without the tooling and here I am I can r get ahold the guy or remember where he lived
I have an identical bar. I really enjoyed the video. I'd like to have seen the hook on top for the cherry picker. I don't like to hone more than .002 either.

I have the same boring bar I have used to bore motorcycle cylinders using a boring table. My problem is setting the cutter. I set it up as you showed but never get the bore the size it is set to I even sent out my setting micrometer and had it calibrated? Any suggestions
Keep the tool warm in your pocket even before you set it so it will grow less in the cut. and also make sure you hold pressure on the tool tight on the same side of the mike. I hope this helps
Tim, can you still get the parts for older Van Norman equipment.? I had an in chassis crank throw grinder, never really trusted it, a friend just had to have it.
Most mechanics nowadays will tell ya to get a new block compleat from the factory but this method is how it mostly used to be done
Nice looking job

Good info . Never used one but may get the chance soon.

After its cut the bore how do you retract with out scratching the new bore? thanks
Retract the cats paws and slide the bar back then lift.
@@survivingmaineona20acrefar77 Thanks for that, if your doing two cuts it wont matter scratching the bore on retract but will it damage the cutter?

i don't know for sure, there are after market tool holders but i don't know who makes them
There are some parts still sold by Van Norman, and some aftermarket, but I'd check their site first shop.winonavannorman.com/

I have a 1988 460 are they worth anything?
I'm sure they are worth more than junk by a good bit
