  • William Conway is considered the 1st Patriot of the Civil War for refusing to haul down the American Flag and replace it with a Rebel one on January 12, 1861 at Warrington Naval Base in Pensacola, Florida. In 1906 the U.S. Navy honored Quartermaster William Conway by sending the Great White Fleet to the town of his birth Camden, Maine and participate in a giant parade called the Conway Celebration.
