I'm always curious about the process of polishing with wood shavings.

Man you guys are shitting on a process that's been used for thousands of years.
It's not used for sanding it's used for polishing the wood. The shavings are from the same wood so have the same hardness. Because of this you don't have to worry about leaving scratches or using too soft of a polishing material. It's a widespread and effective technique you guys are just ignorant.

That’s exactly my thought
Had the same thought initially but i realized that he actually has to polish that underside if he wants to apply the polish with the piece on the machine. If he shaped the inside, he would have lost that area where the metal disk was and wouldn't be able to mount it back on to the lathe forcing him to apply it completely manually.

Thank you for posting this. I have a much greater appreciation for my father's amateur woodworking enthusiasm. He crafted wood bowls for each of his five kids, and I now look at what I thought were simple gifts to us in a much different light.

The wood shavings- my theory is that it breaks the fibers that would be sticking out that would otherwise grab onto a clothe rag etc. But idk why he doesnt have a better option for it.
Others usually just use a fine sand paper..
