Line up: Эдуард Левкович(Eduard Levkovich)-bass Борис Лебединский(Boris Lebedinsky)-guitar (now lives in Florida) (Vladimir Vasilkov)-drums R.I.P. Beautiful! Even during the cold war and current diplomatic disputes, I've always felt there were ordinary citizens like myself that just want to enjoy life and raise their family, properly. I didn't even know there was a soviet funk scene back then. Once again, Magnifico!
it was almost impossible to find even common US vinyl in USSR that's why the prices for imported record were so high on the black market, but soviet jazz was available on our major label Melodia in the 70s, so anyone can buy vinyl or real to real tape and listen to it. Situation in the 50s was different anyway, but in the 70s many people were into black music (e.g. jazz and so). Polish jazz from the 60s/70s is amazing too!
Drums: Vladimir Vasilkov Flute: Rostislav (Slava) Chevichelov Guitars: Boris Lebedinsky, Eduard Levkovich As far as I know this band has no name. They are session musicians who made live jams at St. Petersburg (Leningrad) in 70's. In film credits this track is titled just as "improvisation" by V. Vasilkov. As pipelinepromotion said, it's still unreleased in any way ((
I'm addicted to this video! as a Drummer, I'm inclined to look into jazz-funk alot more closely now. Would loved to have been alive when all this was going on. Great job !
This is from the movie "Ne bolit golova u dyatla"(In English something like "A woodpecker never has a headache") This movie is about the boy, who wanted to become a musician, but he faces different family and social difficulties in soviet society.
this is some of the funkiest funk ive listened to, ever. whenever im frustrated, or angry, or feeling uninspired, i listen to funk, and all that goes away almost instantly. i love funk. :D
I love seeing music from behind the Iron curtain period! Those guys were brave to launch into something so "western-inspired". If you like real "Free Jazz" check out Ivo Papasov; he's Bulgarian and got sent to work camp because he refused to quit playing his music back in the 1970s-80s. At least that's what I was told!
Listen early Poets of Rhythm and their related projects (Max Weissenfeldt on drums). Also listen Soul Destroyers (Malcolm Catto on drums). These 2 drummers plays as good as Vladimir Vasilkov! They are amazing! Also you have to check Enssemble Melodia (USSR) 1974 LP "Labirynth", especially track: "Ognennaya Reka" (Fiery River) - this is a killer jazz-funk tune as well.
@BeatBay There was a period when jazz was basically "suppressed." A notable example was Leonid Utyosov's band: started out with jazz, but were pressed into other music (Soviet chanson, really:). Later, Jazz was given a little more freedom. In my time (the 1980's) Soviet TV saw jazz bands, like Anatoly Kroll. After the "thaw", Soviet movie industry even made a movie about jazz censorship, called "Jazzman" (1983). You can find it on IMDB.

Grave Dweller nice research

Some of the best music that I've ever heard! I must have watched this 20 times today. Vladimir Vasilkov is a legend!
Funk Funkovich Funkov! Tremendous piece and execution!
Sweet to find this again great its still posted 17 years later
That little lick starting 1:52, and how it breaks at 2:00, is damn funky. So is the bass, so is everything. Bravo !
I can't get sick of this, love it even more every time I hear it.

our country always demonized, but there always ordinary people with ordinary life
I'm russian.
In the video man says:
Volodya (Vladimir), i must go to the radiostation for recording.
"Oookay" - saying second and start funking.
Сергей Батраков i'm getting fade. Означает i'm leave.

ruclips.net/video/8XhLw5l0JnI/видео.html 😊👍🏻👍🏻
He was a drummer for Arsenal band lead. by Mr.Kozlov and their first LP is highly collectable in Europe.
Fabulous drummer

Damn this is funky!! Great stuff!
Unlike North Korea and Nazi Germany, the USSR clearly have a great taste of music and does not discourage or ban western music like jazz and rock
How do you know ?
Maybe Kim Jong-il and Dolphie loved the Funk, and were separately jamming to the good vibes...
Who knows ?
