Such a powerful tool? For free?? The good old internet days are not yet dead after all, thank you a lot!
Fantastic plug-in, thank you much Roy!
Glad you like it!
Thank you for doing this Roy! Respect
Dropped a like. Works very well. I hate installing new apps for a new function. So this plugin is perfect for OBS.
Thank you, Mr. Shilkrot, this is very helpful!
Thank you for this plug in!! every other app would fight with my camera before every stream!
When I learned OBS allows me to set my own theme, I was hooked. I've been getting used to the program this week. I've been still using XSplit for BG removal, though. NOW I find out about this OBS BG removal tool. I'm really impressed. I'll be trying this out very soon. Thanks.
thank you man, i just started using OBS studio cause i normally use Elgato capture card but now im starting to use a webcam with no green screen the blur effect is insanely nice and easy plug in install and directions. i apricate the video man! :)
Thanks for that and for using our plugin! If you have a moment please give it a star on GitHub and a review on OBS forums. That helps a lot!
@jfilliaplays I'm getting a lot of wiggly movement around the edges of my head, even when I'm not moving, when I remove the background. I'll have to check again if it happens when I simply blur the real background (which is a nice feature, I agree)....
Are you blurring the real background, or replacing the background with another image?
And do you get wiggly distortion like that when you replace the background?
Thanks
You are heaven sent. Thanks. This helps small streamers like me. Subscribed.
thanks a lot, I was finding bg removal for my gaming live stream and I get it now.
Amazing plugin and a fantastically clear tutorial - thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Just what I was looking for working great after installing the .deb on Debian testing, Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
If the installer isn't working for you, I suggest uninstalling it before attempting a reinstall. I encountered issues with the installer, possibly due to the OBS version. Subsequently, I upgraded to a higher version of OBS, but the problem persisted even after installation.
I resolved it by using the uninstaller and reinstalling it in the new version. While it may seem obvious, having someone remind you of this can be quite helpful.
This is awesome work, especially on Linux!
Nice tutorial! Super easy to understand!
Glad it was helpful! Consider liking and subscribing to my channel and starring the GitHub repo
Great coverage!
Took a little playing around to get this working, but once it's properly installed [ahem!] you will be happy. My setup [old Microsoft Lifecam] introduces a tiny bit of intermittent sparkle around my onscreen image, but I can easily live with that. Thanks very much, Roy.
I'm glad you found this useful! 🙏
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it installed properly. I can't find it under my filters no matter what I do
@@MissyCopeTTV I had a little trouble too, but I don't remember exactly what was going wrong, or how I fixed it. Did you install via the Windows Installer? Background Removal shows up as a Filter under Video Capture Device: So highlight Video Capture Device; click Filters. In the Filters popup, click '+' under Effect Filters and Background Removal should be available to choose.
Thanks Roy!
when you mention about the 30fps - if for example im recording in 60fps do i make that my target? for me mediapipe is very bad and robust video matting is best with least "flickering" but it drops to 32fps while rest all are 60fps but they flicker a lot around the edges no matter if threshold is on or off
The MediaPipe is the smallest and fastest model, but it comes with a tradeoff for accuracy. RVM is powerful but bigger and therefore slower and will reduce FPS. For the flicker you could use the "temporal smoothing" set it to a higher/lower setting, see how it effects your stream.
Very useful,Thanks
Thx for this Alernative!
I like the options and stuff in the plugin, the flicker is quite unsatisfying and the temporal smoothing option did not do anything to remove the flicker at the edges of silhouette
Thanks so much for this incredible plugin!
Installed this on my Mac (successfully according to the installer), but it's not showing up in my list of available filters.
I'm sorry this doesn't show up for you. We help resolve usage problems through GitHub issues github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval/issues you can ask there and we will help sort it out
What to do now to set a green screen to ultimately change the background to an image or some video?
It was there in earlier versions, looks like it is removed now. How to achieve it now?
Now your camera is just transparent so simply add an image source in the scene and move it above the camera and it will be behind your portrait video. Same with a color source if you want a solid color background
thanks for the tutorial
Hey, is there a tutorial on how to get the file into the obs folder properly? I've tried everything and nothing seems to work. I go to filters and "Remove Background' is not an option. I believe i've put it in the right place, I've even tried to put it in places I don't believe it should be in haha but it still doesn't show up in my OBS. Everything is up to date and I have the right version downloaded. Thanks in advance.
Hi. I'm sorry it's not working out of the box for you. There may be several factors. What OS are you running? OBS is portable install? Version should be 29.1+
If it doesn't show up at all OBS never loaded it, so it's either a version problem or a file location problem
When you add the filter did you look at both Audio/Video filters and Effect filters? I spent like 30 mins looking at the wrong filter section. Its in the effect filters section for me.
Hello, I have an option for the blur in the effect section but I am missing the slider to adjust the blur intensity, I am unable to get my background to blur at all. Please help!
Huh. That's very strange. Can you please submit a screenshot in either GitHub issue or on the OBS forum? I'm interested to see how this looks
Dragging and dropping the files from zip folder didn't work for me but it worked with downloading exe file. My pc is windows 11 64bit. Thanks for the tutorial.
i'm glad it worked with the installer! installing the files is more advanced especially with BG removal since you need to also copy all the models and configuration files
What do you put for video source of it's recorded on the laptop directly or a file off the phone???
for a file video you add the BG removal filer to a OBS Media Source, you can even do this on an Image Source or Browser Source - any source that has output on screen!
Hello there it seems that background removal option doesn't appear on my end even already reinstalled the software
Hi - I'm sorry this is the experience you got. We can try to help. What operating system are you running? Is it OBS v29+? Did you install with installer or .zip file?
Thank you so much!
Thank you!!!
0:44 that option is not showing on my macbooks obs (even though i downloaded it)
Thanks for trying our plugin! Many have been successful on Mac. Are you using OBS v29+? Did you install OBS in a standard location on disk? Most problems stem from files installed in the wrong location
windos says, unknown publisher and unrecognized app. is it ok to continue?
Yes! The plugin is made and compiled by myself and all the source is provided free and open, so... Windows may not recognize the publisher - but you do! :D
To get windows to recognize the app I need to pay them for registration... I may do that at some point but I cant afford it right now.
Tip for removing the fluttering around my camera's view? Plus, my arms and shoulders keep disappearing. Tempted to buy a green screen, but Amazon is terrible at filtering the kind I'm looking for.
The robust video matting (RVM) model is far better with the flicker. But I'm releasing v1.1.8 real soon which has Temporal smoothing that helps a lot with flickering for any model
Hello, is there a way to also blur people in background? It doesn't blur them when family walking behind me 2m away
Unfortunately the models are trained to find all humans and mark them as foreground. You can experiment with other models, see how they do. Consider using the TC Mono Depth model since that one is about distance and not necessarily humans
after putting the files in the folder I got vertical lines on the camera, how to revert? I already uninstalled the obs, I reinstalled it and it didn't solve it
I'm sorry this happened. We've never ran into such a problem. Can you ease submit an issue on our GitHub repo github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval ?
Screenshots would be great.
Thank you for making this. I downloaded the plugin, added it to my video capture device as an Effect Filter but when applied, nothing changes in the preview with the sliders. Any suggestions? OBS 29.1.3
Thanks for trying the plugin! Does it do anything with the video? Any background removed at all? Or is it just the sliders aren't doing anything to change the removal. If you have a persistent problem please submit a support request on GitHub github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval/issues
@@royshilk im having this problem right now.
@@Zabrakjedi what operating system are you on? if you have OBS logs to share that would help in finding the bug
Greetings dear sir, and congratulations on your amazing plugin. I just have a question: does this work for Windows 7 Professional? I tried all the steps, and the plugin doesn't show in my options, even after restarting my computer and OBS multiple times. What could I be doing wrong?

does anyone have a solution for plugin not showing up in OBS on windows? from what ive gathered it's a common issue
ive copied files from ZIP to C:/Program Files/obs-studio INSTEAD of %AppData%/obs-studio !!!
Yes depends on how you install OBS (for single user or all pc users) the target directories might change. But seems you got it working!
not shown at effect filter dropdown menu. 30.0.2, and newest plugin version. exe, zip both not work. there is no. win11.
Restart OBS. Check it's "C:/Program Files" and not "C:/Program Files (x86)". Look at the logs to see if the plugin is rejected for some reason. If OBS never tries to load the plugin make sure the .dll file is in the correct folder. You can send me the logs Help -> Logs -> Upload
I have installed the plugin and added the filter but it does not seem to work. Is there something that I need to enable to get it working?
There could be many factors to why it's not coming up. Do you want to go on our support discord server? discord.gg/rm9t3ZWu We will help you
Hey umm, so I tried to download the installer for Windows and it simply will not run. First it told me I needed to run as administrator so I did and then it gave me an 'access denied' error and locked up my entire computer. I have no idea what's going on with this and I haven't seen any other issues like this. I'm running a VPN and I have Avast antivirus if that helps but I don't think either of those things would cause an issue like this.
Wow that's unusual.. ok. But we can try to help you get started. First you don't have to use the installer, you have the .zip but then you need to copy files to the right place. Its not complicated. But the crash and freeze are very strange. I'm happy to help on discord.gg/wf3fHWyx
I haven't understood what I have to download for windows: The 'installer.exe' or the 'zip' file? What's the difference between the two? Thanks
The .exe installer for Windows is probably your best bet if you're just starting out. The .zip file can be unpacked and copied to the OBS directory but that's more advanced. It eventually works exactly the same.
@@royshilk ok thanks a lot
Thnaks its work well.
even after install, there is no filder name of background removal, then how to resolve?
Please see my other comment..
Hey there I just installed plugin but my obs is not working for some reason. Like it works when I uninstall the plugin but when I install and close the app to restart it then it won't open again like I can see it running as app in task manager but it's just there nothing more. I did update my obs to latest version if is that the case but still not working what should I do?

@@royshilk Well thanks I just joined the server and posted my problem at background removal section
is there a way to change the background color? I wanted to use this in conjunction with Chromo Key but black is hard to do with that.
Thanks for using our plugin! There's no need for chroma key since the background is already transparent. Just add a source behind the video and your video will overlay.
Does the source have to be added in OBS? Or can I output the video with a transparent background, and add the source in a video editing software?
@@js_guyman this plugin is built for OBS but many (if not all) modern video editing software now has background removal filters of their own. however you can still preprocess your video in OBS by adding a e.g. VLC/Media source to a scene, loading your video file in there and adding the BG removal filter, then start recording in OBS and you will get a new video file with the background removed.
So I'm using this with Pop OS linux, downloaded the deb file, installed it... then it's still not appearing in the effects filter list? How can I add this manually?
Thanks for using the plugin, I'm sorry it doesn't work out of the box for you. We definitely would be able to help but we'd need more information. Can you open a support ticket in github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval/issues ?
Logs from OBS would be good since it will say if the plugin was not found or it has a problem loading
Same here
Tried instaling this with the .exe file, but the option does not show up in the OBS filter menu at all, none in the Effects menu or even in Audio/Video filters. Tried reinstall the plugin either and it just doesn't work. Currently have OBS 29.1.3, and I am sure I installed the 1.1.x version that should be compatible to the version and running this on Win10. Not really sure why its not working but it just isn't.
I'm sorry this didn't work for you. We can help! Can you open an issue at github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval/issues ? Let us help you out.
How is your OBS installed? With installer or "portable"?
Our plugin is installed into the standard '%appsdata%/obs-studio' directory. So it might be different for you.
Hi there so I just found that we also have the same issue. How did you deal with it? is it working now on your end?
@@beidouimpact4075 I didn't really pursue fixing it because there wasn't anyone else until now having it. As much digging that I have done, I couldn't come up with any ideas aside from perhaps wrong installation or incompatibility. I needed to use it for a video presentation I was working on and my background is awful but I just minimized my background and have myself the only thing in the frame.
i just did it twice@@beidouimpact4075
@@beidouimpact4075 Same issue here.
I got OBS 29.1.3 BUT AFTER I DOWNLOAD THE OBS BACKGROUND REMOVAL IT WON'T SHOW THERE. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HAPPENED?
There could be several reasons
Is this portable OBS?
Did you install to standard folder?
Sometimes OBS installs to "C:/Program Files (x86)/" and that's a problem because its a 64bit plugin.
@@royshilk I try again
The plugin works well, except that I get a lot of digital wiggly movement all around the edges of my head when I remove the background, and replace with another background image. But it doesn't happen if I replace the background image in Skype.... same camera, same set up.
It surprises me that the technology wouldn't be basically the same, and maybe better in OBS, with the extra controls. But is there anything I can do about that?
Thanks for the feedback. You can try the RVM model which is more consistent across time and less wiggly. You can also use the smooth silhouette feature to make a less jagged border
@@royshilk ill try out RVM, but I'll probably need to buy a more powerful laptop in order to make real use of that. I'll run some tests. Thanks for responding
I thought the same - might need a more powerful laptop. The background option in Zoom works flawless but in OBS it is more adjustable@@js_guyman
How do you use an image or video as the background now? I've added the plugin, shows up, 60fps, .2% cpu usage but even just trying to blur, nothing changes on the screen. Windows 11 64-bit. Tried the installer and then downloading and copy files to the correct directory directly.
Just put an image or video source below the camera source, order them in obs.
If everything is set up correctly then obs is rejecting the plugin for some reason. Can you get the logs please? Help->Logs->Upload and send me the link
@@royshilk thanks, something is quite quircky. This morning, no changes, opened OBS back up and it's working. Had image added, didn't change anything, just logging back in seems to work. Also, the quality of it cutting out the background seems to have changed. Not great yesterday a little better today and adjusting the settings really doesn't do much versus turning on and off. Xeon 2255 proc, 192gb or DDR4, RTX 4070.
thats interesting. Did you upgrade to v1.1.8? There hasn't been a change to the underlying algorithm.
@@royshilkno, just first attempt at the install and started with the 1.1.8. Still working. Again not sure what was going on. Still not much adjusting the outlines of my image but moving the camera around and making sure it's capturing face on is about as good as I can get it. Seems to have an issue around hair, ears area. But it is working now.
I tried using the plugin, it showed up but it doesn't seem to do anything when I select it! I can adjust the sliders all I want but the background doesn't change at all, and nothing is blurred out.

how do I change the background color to get a green screen?
Thanks for using our plugin! You don't necessarily need a green background, by using the filter you get a transparent background. You can add a "Color Source" with a green color and place that in the back behind the masked video. You can use an image as background too in the same way.
this filter doesnt show up in the effects list after installing it. obs is installed in default folder.

hi - i'd like to know more about whats not working for you - can you please provide more detail? also - i'm going live soon you can join, you can alao DM on twitter patreon discord
Why when I remove my background it got dicontinued sometimes. But your vidio is continous. Why?
There could be several reasons one might be that your CPU doesn't compute the masks fast enough. Other may be the image-change threshold, if the image doesn't change it doesn't compute a new mask
I have installed this plugin and select it in the filters. But nothing changes when selected. Anyone else run into this issue or possibly know how to solve this.
We can help figure it out on discord.gg/vVsBFnCW we'd need to see some logs to know if the plugin is being loaded or not

I think I’ve got all the software requirements met and the new installer release 1 deb package is putting files in the obs plugin directories. ( I was having trouble with the cmake previously) I’m not sure I’m meeting the HW requirements, yet. I’ve got an HDMI video source but not seeing the filter. I’m running ubuntu studio on an AMD Ryzen 5 and no Nvidia GPU, just the ryzen on-chip GPU. I can try another web camera or another PC, but curious if the GPU type is my problem? This has given me limitations on other SW packages in the past that needed Cuda or tensorflow. Looks nice!! Thanks!!
HW should not be a problem since this can on the CPU, so (any kind of) GPU is not needed.
If you installed the filter but still can't see it make sure your looking in "Effect Filters" (and not "Audio/Video Filters")
Also OBS v28+ is needed, and you may need to restart it as well.
@@royshilk Ok. Good to know! Thanks! I’ll keep messing with it at next chance. So far I definitely upgraded using the ppa repository method to obs studio 29 and that is updated and kept all my old scenes and settings. I have looked in effects filters and rebooted a few times but maybe I don’t have the correct camera source there yet. I threw away a broken monitor and my usb web camera was integrated into it. 😞 The hdmi to usb sampling uses a YU12 format ( I was sampling old Hi8 tapes through a VCR) so I’ll see if I can dig up an older usb camera or get a new one!! Would it work on just a video source, say mp4 file from my phone or does it have to be a live camera stream? We’ll figure it out! Thanks again!
The filter should work on any source, even image source or browser, not just video capture device. You should be able to see the filter in the effects filters selection, if that doesn't appear then we have a problem. I would appreciate seeing the logs to find the problem

this stuff crashes obs for me.
This is very strange. I'd like to get more details. Can you open a support request github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval/issues ?
the plugin install is way too complex it's just not working :/
I'm sorry this hasn't worked for you
And I'm happy to assist discord.gg/ptqJgKbUwR
its just not up to how other video conf tools have built in. Teams for example. shame that it hasnt kept up
what tool do you see in Teams that you're missing on OBS? i would like to learn so i can bring them to OBS for free
@@royshilki just personally feel that this kind of functionality has improved and become more refined in applications such as teams. I use this as an example but when teams first started with this, it was like the obs plugin, now it has matured and refined quite a lot, less jaggy ears, better background separation etc but the obs plugin, not so much
yep i get it. i'm relying on open models that are provided free unencumbered, and that drives much of the quality. while MSFT and Google have gone on to train far better models, I wasn't able to find free ones that are significantly better and run real-time. you can try RVM model in the plugin which is superior to the default MediaPipe. trust me though that I looking for free bg segmentation models on a weekly basis! to improve this plugin
im not work, te intall is work, but de plugins not its obs
Please reach out on Discord for suppor
dont work in 30.0.2
I'm so sorry it's not working right away. It definitely works with OBS v30+ just may be a hardware compatibility problem. We can support you on Discord discord.gg/kp4QgSzt
thx@@royshilk
not work
I'm sorry you got this experience with our plugin. Do you want to give me more details? Or open a support ticket github.com/obs-ai/obs-backgroundremoval/issues and we will help 🙏
If anyone actually showed the process of installing the files, it would be very helpful. Everyone who makes a "tutorial" about this, skips the install. Why???
To install simply run the .exe from github.com/royshil/obs-backgroundremoval/releases/latest
Unfortunately OBS has a terrible plugin experience. Things don't show up after installing? Well boohoo you, there ain't no documentation on anything 🔥
If you have installed it but cannot see it make sure you are running OBS v29+
And make sure you're looking in the Effect Filters section and not in Audio Filters.
If you still can't make it work - please submit a support request in the GitHub repo

Hi, it works for me but I don't know the best settings so it won't consume too much GPU, can you help me
Thanks for using our plugin!
You don't have to use GPU if it's a big hit.
You can set the CPU threads to just 1 or 2 and use the MediaPipe model. This should consume less than 10% CPU, and for me it takes about 3-4% that's all. Only CPU
how do you select a custom background? Thanks!
Just add an image source to your scene and put behind the filtered camera view
@@royshilk Thanks! I figured out out. Thanks for the plugin!
Does this work for Stream Labs?
Unfortunately it doesn't... If there's enough demand I can make it a standalone application external to obs that your can use anywhere
