Super helpful, guided me through the initial setup perfectly. Thank you. One thing that would be helpful would be a bit more detail around certain key decision points and what to look for which way you go.
Thank you for posting this video. Extremely useful. You explanation is spot on!! Best explanation of NAS setup I have seen so far - straight to the point. After watching this, I will be definitely getting the DS920+.
Sorry bit late to the party but just had my Synology DS920 turn up this week and first time I've ever setup a NAS drive. This video guide was really helpful with clear instructions on how to install and configure. Got mine setup no problems by following your video guide so thanks for the advice!
I agree well explained! Thank you. How do I split the total memory in tree Volumes.?I want to share one Nas with two other people. Each needs his own Volume, does it work? Exit trough internet is required

Thanks, this is super helpful! I'm about to set this up for personal file storage and also amateur photography storage - ideally to work with lightroom. I'm going to look at your Plex setup now, but also interested if you have a video or suggestions specifically for plugins with lightroom, and which photo storage system you recommend on the NAS given it sounds like there's about to be a new one soon!
Hey Tom Glanz, thanks for you comment, glad you found it helpful. I don't have any videos on lightroom sorry...in terms of photo storage I manage this all through iPhoto on a Mac, and just store the photos database on the NAS itself.
Consider checking out Photo Mechanic Pro. It’s compatible with Synology I think. Could then just send photo to Lightroom from Photo Mechanic library stored on the Synology. That’s my plan.
One question. I have: - A Modem router from my ISP - A consumer grade 8 ports switch - A new Edgerouter 6P that i just purchased (not plugged in) - A new 5 Bay Synology NAS that i just purchased (Not plugged in) In which order should those be connected to work best, starting from the internet plug in the wall (DSL connection)?
I am watching this as I run some data recovery software to hopefully recover thousand of photos while having to avoid a panic attack thinking I need to finally get this damn thing already!
Thank you for this video. Is it possible to import photos with a Mac, using Lightroom, directly to a Synology DS920+ and use the DS920+ to store and edit photos? Have heard the new DSM version makes this possible. Thanks again.
I just got the DS920+, when adding hard disks into the caddies I couldn’t put the thin strips back into the caddies after the screws were screwed into the side of the HDD, however they slid in and locked in ok and I can see 4 hard disks in the main menu. There were rubber grommits in the sides which the thin strips were plugged into but after I screwed in the screws, there was no room to insert the strips. The hard drives are secured in the caddies. Watching other youtubes, the presenter seemed to be able to reattach the thin strips.
I have 4 16Tb HDDs that already have info on them. How do I get them installed in my DS920+? Can I install 1 new HDD then put the others in after setting up my NAS?
Great Video i am a Little disappoint with the 920+ i save some videos in synology Ds and when y try to run theme the buffer alot play a little and stop and is like that all the time im i doing something wrong?
I have an issue with my system. I set the static IP to access outside the network. what id prefer is to be able to mount the drive/shares to my desktop in my Mac like I can do when I'm home. once I leave the house the desktop mounts disappear. I prefer the desktop setup so I can easier access my files. how do I accomplish that?
This is great explanation. I was wondering what I can do If I already have two 8TB NAS Drives that were set up as RAID1 on my WD Duo. My RAID box failed and the drives are both fine but they are full of content that I don't want to lose. Would I be able to plug those two drives and set them up as RAID1 without losing Data on Synology? Is this something I would be able to do without buying new blank drives? and If I expand my Storage Later am I able to just buy another two and set those up separately as another RAID1. Would be nice to have a video on that I can't seem to find this. THANK YOU
Hi Ludovit, thanks for your comment. This is a tricky one as it depends. Some NAS's actually contain the metadata required to read the content on raided drives. Sometimes you may be able to interchange raided drives between NAS's without problem. Often if you add drives into a new NAS you'll need to create a new partition and/or raid group which likely will cause data loss. Sorry that I can't answer this question more clearly...
I'm totally lost with all the models out there and can't decide which one to buy. Would really appreciate it if you can help me to decide in which is the best Synology for a freelancer video editor. I need it to edit straight from the NAS. 2 bays would be good for me with an option to expand if needed. Thanks in advance!
Hi Mohammed, if you will be using the same computer to edit videos and don’t need to access files from different devices, a DAS would probably be faster for you, especially if you’re working from the drive regularly. A NAS is better for making your files accessible to several devices, or to people over the Internet. And since it’s over your LAN, speed is determined by how fast your network is, although most are pretty fast these days. Good luck.
Great overview of DSM. A couple of things though. The types of disks you're using in your RAID is rather important, and should not be mixed like in your array. Your bay 1 is a surveillance type disk and should be in a separate array for just that purpose - surveillance. Bays 2 and 4 are enterprise disks and a good choice for a NAS RAID array. Bay 3 though is a WD Blue pretty low performance disk, meant for desktops and should not be placed in any RAID environment. This is of course only if you care about your data :) Second thing, static IP allocation for the NAS is a great idea, but it should be done from the router side and not the NAS side. Just my2cents :)
@@darkhank942 Because all 2.5/3.5" disks/SSD's in general will work, sure. But non-NAS/Enterprise (or surveillance disks if that's your use case), are not recommended since it's is not what they're designed for. It's not in the data sheet because new models/capacities are added all the the time. However on the Synology website you can see what disk brand/model/capacity has been tested with your specific Synology NAS.
Trying to decide what to buy for Plex streaming I want to stream atleast 2x4k movies at the sametime. local. its between qnas or synology. but I hear many bad things about qnap with discounts software issues. Either QNAP TS-653D-8G or DS1621+ I could always buy m1 mac mini to stream more movies and for transcoding. can someone help me decide?
Hey, thanks for your comment! I stream 4k vids all the time, but not two at once...would have to test it out. Either way Synology products are great, used QNAP, Netgear, but didn't find them as good. Anyways, thanks for checking out the vid.
You can pickup this awesome NAS from the below link

Somehow everything sound happier when it's said in an Ausie accent!

Excellent guide to setting up the DS920+. Well presented, saved me lots of time.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment.
Excellent video! I'm much more confident about setting this up when it arrives next week. Thank you!
Glad it helped! Thanks for your comment.
Great explanation..
Thanks for the great video. What size SSD would you recommend?
Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you. Glad I found this intro to my new DS920+, Great job !!
Great Video, really helped me get this setup!

Photo are fine but if your doing video the 1gb Ethernet will be limited compared to Qnap’s 2 x 2.5 Ethernet. No brainer:)
thanks, this helped a lot
Thank you so much for the video! Your video was straightforward and easy to follow. I got it setup and ready to go without any issues!
Thank you for you video. I was able to get my NAS ds920+ set up easily. Question, how do I add a new authorized user?
Thank you so much, the best explanation I have found. BIG Thumbs Up!
Glad it helped!
Great 'How To', I'd love to see how to setup Redundancy and Backup.
Great suggestion!
Thank you
no probs
super helpful
Great video, however my tvs can’t see the sub folders in my volume 1. I can’t seem to find how to fix it.
This video was great. Can you do a video on how to add the additional storage for better performance at the bottom of the NAS?
Do you have a recommended setup for someone like myself who just wants to store my music recordings that I produce and write
Thanks for the video...I love I.T
Great guide!
Glad you think so!
How long did it take to build your raid5 volume?

Very Helpful - It works directly - Big thanks - (parfait ! ça a fonctionné du premier coup - un grand merci !)
Thanks for your comment, glad it helped!
nice and explaining
thanks

Good stuff my man
Thanks for the visit
Do you suggest this for music server storage, I want to use it to rip CDs to it, then access them from ROON. ThanKS!
Can you access files stored in the NAS when offsite? or do you have to be connected to the same network as the NAS? (the home network in this case)
Hi thanks for the video, one question what will be your suggestion between raid 5 and raid 10?
Thank you for this video. Is it possible to import photos with a Mac, using Lightroom, directly to a Synology DS920+ and use the DS920+ to store and edit photos? Have heard the new DSM version makes this possible. Thanks again.

What are the best SSDs for the NAS?
How big are the two m2 disk you put in? 🙂
Hi Emilio can I install an operating software into the NAS and use it as a server (not just for saving documents and files) into the NAS?
Yes u can!
do you guys use this for personal or small business?
Also was looking to using static id but didn’t understand what it has to be done jest change a number to a random Number?
I have 4 16Tb HDDs that already have info on them. How do I get them installed in my DS920+? Can I install 1 new HDD then put the others in after setting up my NAS?
Hey Will, you can setup the NAS with just one drive, but it's best to set it up with all your drives already in there, selecting the appropriate raid.
Is it read-only through the Finder/Explorer? Or can you directly modify files there?
Great Video i am a Little disappoint with the 920+ i save some videos in synology Ds and when y try to run theme the buffer alot play a little and stop and is like that all the time im i doing something wrong?
Your keyboard model???

Can you we use the Consumer disks
yep
I'm having issue creating SP and volume with just the 3 Disk. Must I need 4 disk or 3 will work fine with raid 5/SHR?
Choose a different drive configuration. Raid 5 is great and when you get more you can change it anytime
Thanks for this overview, does it have to be connected through a switch or can you connect directly to a computer through usb or ethernet
I think the clue is in the name... NETWORK attached storage... if you want storage attached via USB, buy an external hard drive.
Can you turn off the raid function?

How come there is no such info in the official datasheet that each bay corresponds to a specific type of disk?

My folder does not show in my finder
No, setup everything but still can’t login remotely
Volume! Put some volume on your videos. Get a mic and an audio monitor to keep your Dbs up. It costs you nothing to turn the gain dial up.
Gee whizz, using different types of hard drives in a NAS. You should always use a hard drive for that particular purpose

Thank you. Very helpful
