you'd be surprised by how many people don't know that inheritance is not part of community property. guess their thought is, "you got the money after we got married so it would belong to the both of us". here's the detail they forget, don't know, or chose to ignore: you gain the privilege to inherit based on birth. that precedes marriage. the detail to remember is,,, let's say your parents leave you a home. do NOT add your spouse's name on the deed. same with any money, leave it in a bank account in your name only. otherwise they can claim that by adding their name you basically said you are now sharing your inheritance with them. and if they complain their name is not on the deed or on the bank account just ask them if they plan to divorce you. if they say no then ask, "then what difference does it make whose name is on the house" or bank account, etc
