Thank you for respecting the true, classic Italian-American pizzerias. It hurts seeing some of these style places going out of business while ppl go to fake imitator places
As a Sicilian, if you don't like your pizza well done with a crispy crust and a sweet sauce, you don't know true Italian pizza. These US pizza places think loading a pizza with 3 inches of toppings and cheese is the best. The simpler, the better with that oven char on the crust!!!
Couldn't agree more! As a Pizzaiolo myself, it breaks my heart when people order thick crust pizza with everything on it AND sides of Ranch dressing. My favorite is a thin bubbly well done crust with fresh mozzarella, fresh basil and a dash of olive oil!
Only 2 pies I ever liked that were "out of the norm" and had a bunch of toppings. First was my ex girlfriend's brothers spot he opened up after quitting the chef scene (2 Michelin Star chef), ready?....it was a cold, white pie, marinated and char grilled strips of chicken boob(all fresh ingredients from handmade dough up, always), Romaine lettuce, and his "homemade"(his creation made daily) Caesar dressing, didn't want to even try it, he demanded, I was completely blown away 😅 Second, his again, "stuffed cheesesteak pizza", double baked, shaved ribeye steak, homemade marinara, whole milk mozzarella and provolone with a bit of deli white American cheese as well (not overly cheesy, just for flavor), baked lightly, then another thin layer of his phenomenal homemade dough to top the entire pie, fork sealed edges, egg white, olive oil, basil, and garlic brushed top crust layer, baked a second time until dark brown....it was a 2 slice you're done type of pie, but god damn was that thing good (especially dipped in his fresh arrabiata sauce 👌 (outta Jersey of course, Camden county, unfortunately I forgot what his place was called lol, it was like 20yrs ago leave me alone, marlton NJ though I remember that much 😅) Otherwise, I'm a plain cheese or pepperoni guy, especially a pepperoni Sicilian pie 😩
This is Dave’s actual Top 5: 1.) DeLucia’s, Raritan, NJ 2.) John’s of Bleeker, New York, NY 3.) Di Fara, Brooklyn, NY 4.) Lucali, Brooklyn, NY 5.) Sally’s Apizza, New Haven, CT I can just tell because he brings them up in other reviews as a reference which is the utmost compliment.
Yeah from nyc originally and live in jersey for years now and jersey pizza Is very underrated one good one is star tavern in west orange. I Def Wana try the other ones.
@@JustinoHQ Monte’s definitely was not his top pizza he had zero enthusiasm for it! That was a bogus review if I ever seen one. The pie looked like a jacks pizza in a box! I truly believe that was a sarcastic review due to the hype! 😂 he never stamped it! That’s another tell it was bogus!
Angelo's in NYC was the first real NY pizza I tried, and it blew me away; changed my whole perspective on thin crust pizza. Can't wait to try others on this list.
The point is that if it's GOOD, there will be more than 1 bite to taste the body of the pizza and 1 bite to taste the crust, I'm surprised more people don't get it.
1 thing I realized about Dave’s review he’s very specific about what he likes. He tends to like more charred pie. I always keep that in mind with his reviews. A couple of the spots he raved about I thought had decent pizza but nothing to rave about…he gave ok scores to a couple spots that I thought had amazing pie.
Ya I know what you mean. Some days I crave for fluffy cheesy good tasting pizza that Dave gave terrible scores for and other times I crave for crispy, no flop pizzas, which I follow his reviews for.
He rated my personal favorite pizza spot- still the best pizza I've had to this day- a 7.6. So I think it's fair to assume that different people will have wildly different opinions.
yeah and the one bite rule makes it so rankings can vary like he could of put angelos even higher if he took a bite with the basel because with the basel its even better
Yeah, New Haven Style is my favorite(though granted, living in CT, I'm a bit biased.) We live in the Hartford area, and are lucky enough to have a Pepe's just a few minutes away from our house(the one in Manchester you went to.) We also used to have a Wooster St. Pizza about 5 minutes away. Sally's is incredible though. Like you said, on the same level pretty much. The only thing I'd ding Pepe's for(if we're talking about pepperoni pizza alone, which I think is what he usually orders?) is that I don't love the pepperoni they use. It has a very small diameter(under an inch probably), which would be fine, but it's a bit too thick for me. It's almost chewy(at least that's how I remember it, haven't had pepperoni in a while. Generally I get bacon and garlic, but when I'm in the mood, I get chicken, garlic, and basil, and it is soooooo good(actually I used to get a similar pie at Wooster St., but instead of "plain" chicken breast, they had breaded chicken pieces cut up, and it was like eating a chicken parmesan pizza or something.) I font know how they do it, but the chicken stays so moist, and practically melts in your mouth. Also, I also hate the way they cut their large and X-large pizzas. Though I don't think they do that anymore.
I just had it last week for the first time, it's ok. John's is my #1, followed by Joe's and Prince Street. I basically look up Dave's reviews every time I visit NYC and pick my spots :) Luigi's and Lucali are on my list for the next time I'm in town.
Didn't he say he grew up on it? That's why he gave it a 10. Still would probably. Apparently there's another Mass place that he gave a 10 but denied it later.
Dave, you really have great intuition. In regards to Delucia’s, what us native Raritaners are proud of is, yes , Delucia’s, but mostly, our WWII hometown hero, USMC Gunnery Sgt., John Basilone, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and nicknm
We ate at Monte's a couple of weeks ago & it was straight up awesome. Crust is killer; tomato sauce/gravy... not saucy but not dry, perfect; sausage topping was amongst if not the most flavorful either my wife or I ever had. On top of that, the folks at Monte's could not have been any nicer to us. Completely felt legit homey while there. Cannot recommend Monte's enough really.
The Apizza thing is cool and takes me back to my childhood. My grandmother (born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy) made pizza all the time. When it was ready, she would yell out to us..."Hey, you want A Piece a da Peets"! It's a running joke in our family to this day. I don't know if it's the same thing with Sally's but I'm guessing Sally maybe said something similar to her family when the pie was ready. Mangia!
It's a New Haven thing, all the new haven style pizza joints call what they make Apizza (Abeetz). It dates back to even before Pepes was around which is the oldest of the big boy pizza spots in New Haven.
Luigi's is the quintessential NY neighborhood slice joint. I was there on St. Joseph's Day a few years ago just as the city was starting to close down because of COVID. I was talking with the owner about how I was sad that I couldn't get a St. Joseph's Day pastry (a pastry made in NY Italian bakeries only on St. Joseph's Day) because the school where I teach had just closed and we always have them on St. Joseph's Day. Owner goes in the back and brings out a St. Joseph's Day pastry that he picked up on the way to work from Staten Island. Just gives it to me no charge because my name is Joseph and I should have one on my name day. Made my week. Also great fucking pizza.
Awesome to see so many great moments compiled but uh..... and I just noticed so forgive me, but is that Brent Young from The Meat Hook coming outside at the end of the Lucali review?(just looked and he's at the beginning also)

The reason places do that in the us, is because its easier to mask shit pies w an inch of cheese and toppings.
Are you sure you are a Sicilian?
New haven does pizza better than Italy.
Only 2 pies I ever liked that were "out of the norm" and had a bunch of toppings.
First was my ex girlfriend's brothers spot he opened up after quitting the chef scene (2 Michelin Star chef), ready?....it was a cold, white pie, marinated and char grilled strips of chicken boob(all fresh ingredients from handmade dough up, always), Romaine lettuce, and his "homemade"(his creation made daily) Caesar dressing, didn't want to even try it, he demanded, I was completely blown away 😅
Second, his again, "stuffed cheesesteak pizza", double baked, shaved ribeye steak, homemade marinara, whole milk mozzarella and provolone with a bit of deli white American cheese as well (not overly cheesy, just for flavor), baked lightly, then another thin layer of his phenomenal homemade dough to top the entire pie, fork sealed edges, egg white, olive oil, basil, and garlic brushed top crust layer, baked a second time until dark brown....it was a 2 slice you're done type of pie, but god damn was that thing good (especially dipped in his fresh arrabiata sauce 👌 (outta Jersey of course, Camden county, unfortunately I forgot what his place was called lol, it was like 20yrs ago leave me alone, marlton NJ though I remember that much 😅)
Otherwise, I'm a plain cheese or pepperoni guy, especially a pepperoni Sicilian pie 😩
11:17 Dave trolling those two young ladies talking about his Gma from the old world lmao
I dont think they believed him, lol.
This is Dave’s actual Top 5:
1.) DeLucia’s, Raritan, NJ
2.) John’s of Bleeker, New York, NY
3.) Di Fara, Brooklyn, NY
4.) Lucali, Brooklyn, NY
5.) Sally’s Apizza, New Haven, CT
I can just tell because he brings them up in other reviews as a reference which is the utmost compliment.
Definitely get the vibe that Monte’s one might’ve come with a paycheck.
By his rankings, New York is the pizza capital of the united states, not New Haven.
@@rascal211he has New Haven too heavy though of course New York has more spots so better chance
Angelo's in NYC was the first real NY pizza I tried, and it blew me away; changed my whole perspective on thin crust pizza. Can't wait to try others on this list.
Dave, do a One Bite tour by going back to each place back to back and declare a winner!
Nobody going to talk about the “we put our blood sweat and tears into this pizza, family recipe.” 🤣🤣🤣

One amazing Top 10 List, 10 amazing pizzas and the Prez is still taking "one" bite like he only takes "one" line... Everybody knows the rules.
Best za reviewa eva. Thanks Portnips
I love how Dave always says “one bite” but then he always eats at least a whole slice before he gives a review 😂
And he says even when he’s 4 bites in 😂😂
@@jackbagot2419 and says it multiple times before and during him eating.
The point is that if it's GOOD, there will be more than 1 bite to taste the body of the pizza and 1 bite to taste the crust, I'm surprised more people don't get it.
If he only eats one bite, you know the pizza isn’t good.
@Hunter Fabio2 no, there is no point. It's intentionally comically absurd.
No way he would give Monte’s a 10 today…would love to see him re-review some of these places.
@@emperormouse5487wat trash you eating
yeah and the one bite rule makes it so rankings can vary like he could of put angelos even higher if he took a bite with the basel because with the basel its even better
@@queurki3701 One bite?
Di Fara must be genuinely spectacular pizza. Looked like that slice had been lying around for a while.
I just had it last week for the first time, it's ok. John's is my #1, followed by Joe's and Prince Street. I basically look up Dave's reviews every time I visit NYC and pick my spots :) Luigi's and Lucali are on my list for the next time I'm in town.
@@t.moorefinancial8938 1. Di Fara, 2. Prince, 3. John's for me a few weeks ago. My Di Fara slices were straight out of the oven, no reheat. Perfect.
I might not be the only one but i didn’t like it compared to other places I’ve been too much oil.

Didn't he say he grew up on it? That's why he gave it a 10. Still would probably. Apparently there's another Mass place that he gave a 10 but denied it later.
I've been to 4 places on this list and Monte's is at the bottom of the 4 I've been to - by far.
Sally's is the best that I've had in this top 10 list.
"We have a million heroes growing up, we don't realize there are heroes in our house with us everyday". What a beautiful sentiment.
Giovani is an absolute LEGEND! I would fly to NY just to shake that man’s hand & buy his pizza🙏🏻🔥
That Luigi's pie looks PERFECT! 👌
I love how Johns got a 9.2, 9.3, and a 9.4
am i watching a 44 year old man eat pizza when i have work in 8 hours? yes, yes i am
great channel mate
Mangia!
Fun fact: "Sally" is (was) Salvatore.
It's a New Haven thing, all the new haven style pizza joints call what they make Apizza (Abeetz). It dates back to even before Pepes was around which is the oldest of the big boy pizza spots in New Haven.
The rant on NYC at the end of the Lazzara review is a piece of poetry.
Did he REALLY say Sicily is shaped like a boot?!? Lmao Noooo Dave, Italy is the boot Sicily is the island below the boot 😂

Started my day watching pizza reviews. Today is going to be a good day. Thanks Dave for your hard work.
Loved that story. Classy as hell
I gotta hook down your body in the last year. I love it. Keep up the good work brother

John's of Bleeker only being a 9.3 is bs by today's standards. I've been to so many places and fuck me that place is just spectacular.
