Here in the States ,I rode my bike about 270 kilometers to participate in an offroad event and most people thought I was nuts. You rode across Australia!
Hi Bill Cotton, riding across Oz is almost like another day at the office. I’m not nuts...but it does help to be a little crazy. I know some nutters who would ride 270 km just to get a good cup of coffee. Thanks for watching. Hope you like the Vid.
Great to see a vid from your good self again your looking fresh and healthy enjoy the rest of your trip home safe and sound. Me here in Ireland this Sunday and Monday me and my Butty are doing a trip on de wild Atlantic Way down the south west of Ireland not exactly AUSTRALIA but 2 Wheels none the less . Love to show you the best of this little place we call home. 😎☘☘☘☘
You can't compare an orange to an apple. Both countries are full of riding adventures, however of different styles. The main point though is: they are both pure riding fun!
i know more than a year late.. but I love the fact that you ride yourself over to the east cost for this things!! Next year... there is a Safari from Darwin to Broome!! Hope to say Hi on that one!!
Hi Leon Esterhazy, next years event from Darwin is their ‘Enduro Safari’ which was meant to happen this year in August. They put it back 12 months. If I was a gambling man, I reckon it would involve the length of the Gibb River Road. Stunning scenery thru the Kimberley Region. See you there.
Absolutely Great as always Steve you make me so envious, You are amazing. I looked at the new BMW when I was Perth and just need to get bike fit on my KLR in and around Kalgoorlie before I make the change. They are unbelievable bikes.
Mongrel Dog Productions You are absolutely right I love the Goldfields’s If ever you are heading this way you will always be welcome and if you need a bed it’s yours!!! Keep up the great videos
The great travelers: Mongrel Dog and his faithfull GS! I'm watching your video only now because last week I decided to do a "Steve's": a friend invited me for coffee and I said "Sure - that's a good excuse for a bike ride"!! The thing is that I was in Lisbon (Portugal) and she lives in Moscow (Russia)... 5000km and 1 week later we had that drink! Seriously, I'm happy to see that you're in great shape and everybody is having fun in the Safaris Down-Under (I sure miss that) cheers mate
5,000 km is a long way for a coffee. She must be special. Its springtime where you are...the weather is hopefully warming up for you. The Safaris are now being managed by Chris Urquhart and Shane Booth from GS Off Road Australia. There is aGS Enduro from Mildura to Alice Springs in late August but i am already committed to something else. Watch this space. Thanks for watching.
I'm working in Moscow, I went to get my bike from Portugal. It was cheaper to ride it than freight it by air or land transport. Friends often tell me to sell the Sertao and buy another bike... they don't get it: it's my bike! :D
Hi Honda NC750X Stuff, I’m just a hack with a camera that enjoys sharing my adventures. Glad you like my ‘style’. That makes me feel that I must be doing some things right. Your backyard has a real mixed bag of interesting roads and tracks. Thanks for watching.
Hi keith pearce, most times, I use these events as a jumping off point to see other parts of the country on the way there or on the way home. This year I was a little time poor and had to get back in a hurry ( to pack and go on a 10 4WD trip). Thanks for watching.
G'day mate! How have you set up your Helmet to external mic and Drift ghost camera? I'm guessing wind blast would effect the builtin mic badly. Therefor run an external mic into lid somewhere. How does it go in rain?
Hi John h, I have the external mic just inside the helmet placed very close to my mouth and attached by Velcro. Wind noise is ok up to about 50 kph but after that it becomes too annoying. If you were to fit it to a full face helmet it may be improved...I use an Enduro helmet with goggles. I haven’t used it in rain so I can’t comment. I don’t use a lot of technical equipment because it can get expensive....I’m just a hack with a camera in most cases and the gear does get knocked about. Thanks for watching.
Hi F650GSAdventures, I hadn’t thought about a packing list video. It depends on how remote you go and whether you are in a small group or not. I’ll give it some thought and maybe do it in the future. Glad you like the Vid. Thanks for watching.
Always a pleasure to see one of your videos. Had I been aware of the date of the Safari, I would not have returned back to Europe the day before the start. Oh well, next time perhaps. After I had participated in 2001 it is about time to join again. However, if that does not happen, there are always your videos...
Hi Carsten Mueller, there is always the GS Enduro late August this year. Mildura to Alice over 6 days. I won’t be there for that one. The dates clash with another ride. Plus I’ve been on most of those roads and tracks more then once. Glad you like the vid(s).
Hi Biker Bytes, just another day at the office this time riding across there and back. I was a little time poor on this trip so I couldn’t mix it up a bit. Thanks for watching.
Hi JJ's....at least that will fill in 18 minutes. Not sure what you are going to do the rest of the night though. Maybe watch re runs of your own adventures???
You had to get in quick for this one...it sold out in 5 days. They do have the GS Enduro from Mildura to Alice in late August this year. That might be an option. Glad you like the vid.
Great videos. As an American I love watching so I can see the Australian countryside. One thing though, turn down the electronic music. It's louder than the speaking bits.
Nice one Steve, your GS Safari vids (and others) now a part of my must views. Earlier on was Intrigued about your camp spot on the Eyre. My brother and I stop at Fraser Range as after 1000km on tar from Perth its a good spot to stop, have a shower and cooked dinner if you want. Hyden Norseman road cuts that down to 750 so looking to stretch the run further. Plenty good spots along there though to freecamp. Interested to know your “target” km’s on any given day when heading East.
Hi Ben Wittber, I’ve done that road a few times over the years but there are numerous places to bush camp while in the WA side of the Border and into SA before Ceduna. After that, there are too many fences to predict whether you’ll find a suitable spot or not. If I’m on my own, I can usually cover more distance and don’t have to make allowances for anyone else. Having said that, I don’t always travel solo. I usually bush camp at the Telstra transmission tower just east of Balladonia (on the southern side of the highway). Guaranteed reception. I just go thru the unlocked gate which gets me far enough off the road to limit traffic noise and safe distance to light a fire. Day two is normally Ceduna in one of the caravan parks which allows a shower, food and cold beer from the local hotel. On the return journey it is usually take it as it comes. Glad you like the Vid. Thanks for watching.
Hi Corbin Danylycha, 60,000km in three years....but I’ve only ridden the bike 5 times. 3 Safaris and 2 Enduros lol. I don’t use the bike for commuting or around town. It is purely for recreation. Thanks for watching.
Really enjoy these safari videos man. Just upgraded from my 1st gs 1200 2005 to a 2014 gsa the other day! Only found your channel the night before haha, faith me thinks! 😁 never knew about these gs safaris man. Maybe they do some over here in Ireland. Great work, inspiring stuff bro. Keep it up! Arran 🤘😂👍☘
Hi Arran, glad you like the Channel. The GS is a handful off road but I cover huge distances in the Outback and the bike just eats up the kms. Enjoy your new possession. You could always travel to Oz to do a Safari. Guys have been known to travel across the world to attend. Thanks for watching.
Hey Steve! Been waiting for your video for weeks since I saw you on Safari mate! Great job and makes me miss the event! Hope you had a good four wheel driving trip since then too.
Hi TheJezwick, glad you like the Vid. I notice you appear in another Safari vid as well. You appeared like you enjoyed the event. Maybe see you on future events (although I will not be on the Enduro in August...I’ve got other commitments). Thanks for watching.
Hi Scott C, glad you like the Vid. The police stopped me for speeding. 122 kph in a 110 zone. Thankfully he let me off with a warning. Sometimes it’s a little hard not to speed with such wide open spaces here in Oz. Thanks for watching.
Clocked at 122 in a 110 zone. Rounded down to 120. Told to slow down cause its a jungle out there. Let off with a caution. Could have been $440. Very thankful.
Hi Allen, i'm not sure; i dont keep track. I've had the Beemer for 3 years and done 60,000km but i've only ridden it 5 times. 3 Safaris and 2 Enduros lol. I have the DR650 in the shed as well which shares the burden (and then there is the mountain bike but that is another story).
Mongrel Dog Productions Ok. I don’t ride but I want to get my learner license in a few months. I am 50 year old. I would like to follow you and ride around Australia. Any advice for a fellow Aussie?
Hi@@allenparsens5279, small steps. Take small steps. Get a bike that you can handle comfortably and do some weekends away close to home. When you think you have your 'systems' down pat then venture further away and for longer periods. Network...start networking. Join local ride groups (Facebook is a good start) and mix with like minded people. It starts with a ride to the shops. Next thing you know, your touring the world!!!! Good luck.
Hi Gary Goes, yes; and no. I will be doing the Simpson but leaving a day ahead of the Safari in a group of 4WDrivers. There are currently some disruptions around that neck of the woods as a result of recent flooding from TC Trevor earlier this year so it will make for an interesting journey. Big Red is currently no go with a diversion around it and the road south of Birdsville is currently closed. Glad you like the vid.
Hi Gary Goes, arrived at Birdsville after crossing Simpson. We weren’t overtaken by the Safari Riders and they didn’t arrive last night (Friday) which is what I would’ve expected. Maybe the ride didn’t go ahead. Maybe they all perished. I’ll keep my ear to the ground to find out. Depart today for Alice and the Canning Stock Route.
Hi Keith, I had to slab it to get home quickly this time. I had to be home by Good Friday and pack the 4WD for a 10 day getaway. So much to do; so little time.
I really enjoy your videos , but I can't see why anyone goes adventure riding on a massive heavy leviathan of a bike which it seems can't be picked up off the deck by 1 man , let alone out of a tricky spot .Keep em coming good to watch though ; )
Hi Dave, I wouldn’t be the oldest Rider but I must be getting up there. I still enjoy the Safaris but usually use them as a stepping off point to see or do something else. The Cop was pretty good about things (do the crime; do the time). He let me off with a warning. Thanks for watching.
