The dub might sound silly today, but back when this version was released no one complained about the voice acting because most other dubs were pretty much on par or worse. So we really didn’t know better or care, anime was so scarce back then we took what we could get. Plus the movie was so mind blowing and amazing it didn’t really matter.
I absolutely 1000% agree with you. Despite it's corny flaws and inaccuracies I still love the Streamline dub because I'm nostalgic for it's 80s sound. Im glad to own the 25th Anniversary Blu-ray/DVD combo pack from 2013 because it gives me the option to pick whichever dub I want to watch it on. Something that the 2001 Pioneer DVD release with the new dub only didn't allow unfortunately. And I fucking hated that. God bless those who put both dubs on the 2013 Blu-ray/DVD pack and screw those asswipes at Pioneer for basically saying to us with the 2001 release, "You can either watch it with the new dub, or in Japanese OR NOT AT ALL. i love when english voice actors don't try to imitate japanese voice actors, and instead just approximate how that sort of character would probably sound in a western-produced animation. sounds way more natural than when they try too hard to imitate the original japanese delivery, or just do a generic "anime voice" and call it a day.

The 2001 dub had a budget, a better translation, and phenomenal talent behind Kaneda and Tetsuo, and thats mainly because we developed a bit more of an understanding on how to dub things over the years

What's funny about Akira's dub is that the localisation of Akira to a comic had lots of effort put into it. From what I've heard Otomo really liked comics including their colours. So he was quite involved with the colouring, he even redrew parts of the manga to flow nicer as it was also flipped to be right to left.

What's funny about Akira's dub is that the localisation of Akira to a comic had lots of effort put into it. From what I've heard Otomo really liked comics including their colours. So he was quite involved with the colouring, he even redrew parts of the manga to flow nicer as it was also flipped to be right to left.
