Thanks so much for this. I followed your instructions, and have now given my stock of older 2018 ACCST R9M, R9MM equipment a new life. I don't have the skill to do proper test on the effects of Express RLS, unlike you, but subjectively, could feel the difference immediately. Much smoother, confident control, with no other change in setting. This is just brilliant work on the part of the ExpressLRS devs.
Ok well it looks like I can blow the dust off of my R9 module...... This project is definitely on my "to do" list. Great walkthrough brother! Much appreciated.
Thanks for the detailed video. I have been flying r9 for over a year, and I can’t wait to upgrade to this. Such a shame how Frsky screwed up their near monopoly in our hobby, and so awesome that people are out their working hard to make this hardware work. I will not buy from TBS, so I greatly appreciate an alternative.
Thanks for mentioning this already in your previous video. I was immediately sold and with the support of these guys I got it installed. Btw already supported in OpenTX 2.3.10
Yea, I updated to 2.3.10 no can find option to use the external aerial on my X12S and cant find the spectrum analyser dirty radio air graph thingy as seen on the T16 Tx16's any ideas of how to fix this, as I've tried back dating and having trouble, so just sticking with the 2.3.10
I just did the mod on my R9 and figured I would mention that the Lua Script may show ????? on everything until you change the Max Baud rate to 115200. Just incase someone else runs into this issue. Thanks for get great tutorial. Now I need to flash my R9mm receivers!
thanks a lot UAVTech! you are the real channel to listen to! as you are the one who is not biased and the only one so far to be brave enough to post this!
This is the exact same story I went through. Got set up with the original R9M system, got fed up with the R9M system, then forked out the cash for Crossfire as I should have done originally, and now have three quads still needing a Crossfire receiver, lol.
1. Cloning with VScode direct. Confirm no account is needed. 2. Mention Display setup for LUA. I Forgot myself. 3. Clarify that select target to build individual un PlatformIO. Like give example if target name to expand to then click build.
I flashed the wrong firmware to the TX cause it was not clear which one to use when flashing through BL. It is straightforward if you are familiar with the versions, but if it is all new a bit confusing. Also the videos help a ton cause you see sometime a step that is not so clear. In the end the wiki is already good cause I managed and I never touched any code or git or cloning. So really well written. Thank you and amazing video from uav tech too!
Nice, can't wait to try this :) I bought my R9M + 3 receivers a few months ago for 30 bucks. As a novice freestyle pilot, I am quite happy with the stock firmware, but after seeing, what ExpressLRS is capable of, I'm definetly gonna do this
Hiya, me same as you. How'd ya go doing the firmware swap? Me old n not so computer savvy. Running stock R9mm's on 4x DJI builds. Get 1.2km on 500mW. And no problems. So, don't wanna fix it if it ain't broke.lol
Thanks Mark! I've got an original R9M collecting dust and a handful of receivers in a drawer for all the same reasons :) Can't wait to give this a try!
UavTech.... I think that I did it.....I walked through the project, one step at a time..... #1 - flashed OpenTX (and bootloader) #2 - fixed SD card issue via notepad edit #3 - Did the Visual Studio install, had issues with the clone Github section, used GitKraken and got the job done (thank you for showing GitKraken links on screen!!!) #4 - compiled the new LRS firmware file # 5 - Flashed the R9 with both files (R9M FW then ELRS FW, compiled in previous step) And.......nothing happened. 😥 However, being the believer that I am, I created a new model, and when I switched the Internal Module to either CRSF or R9 - I GOT THE START UP TONES AND A GREEN LIGHT!!! Thank you Mark, aka UAV Tech, you breathed life into my R9M - Happymodel RX here we come 😎
I applaud developers for putting the time and effort in to release this. It just amazes me that in this community people are prepared to do a lot of hard work for free for the benefit of others in the hobby, running the original R9M on a couple of quads I have had no fail safes, been out a few Kms, and the only issue was the occasional jitter on adaptive power mode that was resolved by setting a fixed power level. So, introducing these new benefits, without having to spend a lot of money changing out perfectly good hardware is fantastic and the way things are at the moment a real plus….! 🙏🏻🙂...
14:52 when editing the user defines txt, you may want to consider the way you set up switches on your TX. Default is to use 4 2way switches, so if you're using any 3 way switches or pots they won't work the same. If you switch to the DHYBRID_SWITCHES_8 you must use Aux1 to arm.
Its funny, I have the same R9m module and ended up doing as you did and buying a full size crossfire module and boxed my Accst R9M. Then EpressLrs came out! I flashed that to my old R9M and all my Rx's and now I prefer using ExpressLRS over my TBS crossfire! EpressLrs actually has telemetry working better for us Fixedwing pilots and I can customize it to my liking unlike TBS crossfire telemetry which I think isnt the best.
These developers are awesome. Alessandro also started a repo for a ESP32 based timing system. I wish we can buy hardware kits (not retro-fitted FrSky products) for ExpressLRS some day, so we get a popular community-driven open source radio link.
Probably we have yet to wait for a more stable release including the R9slim, configurable adaptive power and few more things. Thanks for the great insight for the general public Mark!
Hi UAVTech I did everything and got the tones. but when I got to change bod rates ect.... It shows question marks. I had flex firmware before on r9. Is this right? I have a qx7. Please let me know. Thanks
Mark, great, informative channel. Thank you. Is it possible to flash ExpressLRS to a FrSKY R9M ACCESS (2019) module using a Taranis Q7X ACCST transmitter? Thank you in advance for your opinion.
I also bought R9 at first only to have constant issues with it before moving completely to Crossfire as well. I ended up selling my R9 module and receivers to TBS in exchange for a 50% discount on a bunch of nano receivers to replace my R9 receivers. Kinda wishing I'd kept them now to give this a shot.
Well done for doing this. I'm five minutes in and also want to mention well done for recognising that this information gets out of date and new people can end up in a mess by following 3 year old Joshua Bardwell videos because for some reason they're still dominating search results 😅

Great video and kudos to the developers for all their hard work. Question: there's been mentions of "limited telemetry". How limited? One thing I find really useful with R9 telemetry is the GPS co-ordinates and it has actually helped me find a lost quad in the past, as the telemetry was displaying the last known lat/long of the quad on the transmitter screen. Does ExpressLRS have a decent range of telemetry sensors such as GPS lat/long?

Ok So I went on expresslrs and tried to find the hglrc herme module so i can start the flashing procedure but it seems its not in there . so what do i use ? it gives every other module except for mine. any recommendations thanks .
Hello was wondering 💭 I js got the Access version R9 luckily when I started in the hobby a year ago I got the 2019 Qx7 access Radio. I up graded to the hall Gimbals I love this thing lol. My quit. is should I update the 2019 Access R9m model to LRS? Thanks
If ACCESS model and Radio, I would NOT switch. It doesn't have the heart beat issue and it has full Telemetry whereas ExpressLRS has limited. Also ACCESS has OTA receiver updates. Express, you have to update receivers through the FC.
What about having old R9M tx and paring it with r9mm 2019 receiver with OTA or whatever other nonsense they came up with?? (I run out of receivers, need to buy whatever is in stock now)
Is there any significant gain in doing the hardware mod for qx7 radio and the r9tx for just " normal freestyle" use? I have a qx7s so i would have to do the mod on the radio and tx right?
Thanks for the hard work you do. I have finally got around to attempting this on r9m lite but I get a "update error no sync" error when I begin to flash the firmware.elrs file. Anyone else had this problem? Its a second hand module so I don't know how it has been flashed before.
Hi, thanks for this great info. So I just started following your procedure on flashing. I downloaded the special opentx2.3.10 from AlessandroAuExpressLRS github page, then when I tried to upgrade the radio bootloader I got stumped. I tried opening the notepad and click the version (I suppose I needed to put the opentx firmware onto the notepad first and change the bin name?) and now I downloaded the new sdcard contents from Opentx and put them on radio sdcard. What happened was the radio keeps asking for new update for the new bootloader which is the 2.3V0030, while the opentx sdcard contents has the 34 version. So now my radio doesn't have BF tools and basically the sdcard is not functioning. Pls advise. I haven't even started the vscode procedure yet lol:))
Thanks. For this. I am so mad at frsky but have alot of their equipment. After the early accst r9 module they did direct marketing that i should buy the 2019 better version. However that did ofc not work with my accst qx7 so then they simply responded that i should flash the accst firmware that had not got any updates since forever. I went with frsky in the first place since I wanted to give them a chance. But they left me hanging even after I invested alot in their long range equipment..
I got this all setup and the lua for elrs is working but i have lost my betaflight lua ability. i wanted to adjust pids on a new build in the field. is it because smart port and sbus are no longer hooked up? does something need to change in the ports tab? I have also notice since i disconnected sbus and smart port, some other bteaflight sensors are not showing values
Hello, I have Taranis X9D Plus ACCST and R9M ACCST. From what I understand, a resistor mod is required for the R9M Module. Also, Taranis X9D (none plus) needs mod as well, but since I have Taranis X9D Plus, no mod is necessary for the transmitter. Is that correct? Thanks
I have an original X10S ACCST transmitter, and I purchased a R9M 2019 module w/R9MM receiver. I've flown this for 6 months now with no real issues. I presume the system's defaulting to ACCST mode, due to slow inverters in the transmitter. Will I need to do the hardware mod (aka the "Crossfire mod") to my radio, in order to get the benefits of ELRS?
Fantastic, you had me at “All right!”. Funny thing is I have just watched a video on the difference between Visual Studio 2019 and VS Code! 😊, this will be on my to do list as I’m also an original R9M user (flex firmware), and more than annoyed at FrySky for what they have done. Is the packet loss issue related to why I would get what I called “uncommand stick inputs or jitter?” when flying on adaptive power setting?
@@HERSDT_FPV Thanks for the reply, but this was an issue early on and I posted a betaflight issue in Feb 2019 "github.com/betaflight/betaflight/issues/7585" then I closed it when I realised it was not betaflight related problem, I only asked now as I was curious as to what was causing it back then.😀 As above I have not had any other issue's with my R9M, causing more of a sting when FrySky decided to Cr*p on its customers. ☹️
Hello i flashed the r9 module but when i open the lua there are just ? marks next to everything what did i do wrong?? never mind i was using r9 protocol
Thanks for all your tutorials UAV, question, I'm new to long range radio systems and was interested on the R9 for it's cost and availability. If I'm starting out fresh, no module or rx's, will the R9 system with access rx's work good or will I need to do the hardware mod? I'm also using the Jumper T16 Pro transmitter.
nice but I have x9d taranis ACCST version, do I need any mod with my radio? on the discord they want me to do Baudrate crossfire mod from 400k to 115200...what do you think ?
Cool! Thought I’d have to get rid of those R9 radio modules and have my FrSky Terranis Access radio. Went with Crossfire because of the lower latency. So that was the fix huh? At least someone found out about that and addressed the issue. So this was causing the dropouts?
I have a problem, my range is so bad with my r9 2019 900mhz. 400 meters and failsafe. A new reciever and antenna are helping nothing ( other reciever placement too). I flasht both new? My lq is most of the time high but the rssidb is so low i have after 300meters -90 at 50 mw ???? Can someone help me
If you have a 2018 ACCST R9 module, YES. If you have a 2019 ACCST R9 module, NO. Of course with both done, you can run at 400,000 baud rate for the communication from OpenTX to the Module (vs. 115,xxx).
@@uavtech Thanks, Sorry, but I just want to clarify, I have 2 - 2018 r9 modules, so I will need to do the mod in the R9 module? and on my 2nd QX7 s without the crossfire mod, Will I need the crossfire mod+the R9 mod, or just the R9 mod. I appreciate your time. Take care Mark
You don't need any mod. to run at 115,xxx baud rate. But if you want the fast frame rate you will need the Xfire mode for the QX7 ACCST edition and for the R9M 2018 module.
I have some issues with the r9m 2019 on my accst qx7. I set down the nauseated in my qx7, but I always get the message telemetry lost, telemetry recovered. Do I have to do the crossfire mod on my qx7 to use the r9m 2019 with express lrs?
Hey UAV Tech, does this beta version of opentx still support crossfire shot as well as ELRS? Just wondering so I don't have to flash back to a different version to be able to use my crossfire module again.
@@uavtech Thanks! I just wanted to make sure before I took the dive. I wish I would have known about all this before I sold my R9 stuff hahaha! Oh well, price wise with a $10 module and a $23 dollar Rx you can't beat it for the price. Looking forward to giving it a try!
I have not tested, but the word on the street is ExpressLRS at 200hz mode has more range than Xfire at 50hz mode. Of course to go really crazy with that, lower the rate and up the power output to 1W.
We removed the 2W option because of heat issues, actually we found at that some modules even have issues at 250/500mw if you don't add external cooling. For the moment I recommend you stay 250mw or below, or otherwise do a 30min heat soak test and make sure you are not effected.
uavtech will this work for new rx from frsky? i stupidly bought two new r9mx thinking i could do like i did with ota rx and flash it...well it dont power on after firmware but im sure firmware issue. i have a tarantis x9d plus accst 3yr old with 2019 r9m
love ur content! So if i do this will my rsxr and xm+ recivers still work if switched back to 2.4ghz. i still have a few quads with 2.4ghz that wont bind with xm+ rx in them ever since i added the accst r9m mod back in 2019... and i really dont want to buy all new equipment. i cant even find r9mini with accst rx anymore...
Yes. The R9 external module is a separate thing from the 2.4Ghz module.inside the radio. Even when you added R9 back a while ago, it should not have broke your 2.4ghz gear. In OpenTX, you need to have a model with the internal 2.4Ghz RF chip enabled. Then another with it disabled and the external R900 RF enabled.

As far as I know, it is in ACCST stuff. The ACCESS stuff has a clock sync pin to fix. However, Express fixed another way, just like TBS did without tell folks to buy new equipment.
I have r9 lite pro and r9mms .. I hate that I keep getting old firmware r9mm and can't bind to ota update. And doesn't come with cable. One time I had to put r9 lite to old firmware to Ota update then update r9 lite.. now I made a half ass plug to pins sitting in r9mm and tried that updating. But something went wrong. Said updated but no rssi of receiver or control. When I try changing r9mm options it doesn't change so binds but doesn't get any radio controls info. Think its toast lol

Talk to ELRS devs. This is an older video. ELRS Configurator should not fail to.compile.

1- Flash *opentx-("myradio")-2.3.10.bin* on radio (github.com/AlessandroAU/ExpressLRS/tree/master-dev/OpenTX)
2- Edit the file */src/user_defines.txt* with the correct frequency and name
(in my case is only EU 868)
3- Compile the file with PlatformIO
4- Flash the *r9m_elrs_bl.frk* file (github.com/AlessandroAU/ExpressLRS/blob/master-dev/src/bootloader/r9m_elrs_bl.frk)
5- Flash *firmware.erls* on R9M module
6- Copy ErlsLua script for settings
It's all....
Thanks for all your support Mark.
You have to flash the boot loader overlay into the module, then the elrs file.
I see now that is in the comment. If you are not getting connection with LUA, made sure Baud Rate is 115,400. If still issues, get on ELRS Discord.

If ACCESS model and Radio, I would NOT switch. It doesn't have the heart beat issue and it has full Telemetry whereas ExpressLRS has limited. Also ACCESS has OTA receiver updates. Express, you have to update receivers through the FC.
Thank you 🙏
What about having old R9M tx and paring it with r9mm 2019 receiver with OTA or whatever other nonsense they came up with?? (I run out of receivers, need to buy whatever is in stock now)
Yeah that works fine
Is there any significant gain in doing the hardware mod for qx7 radio and the r9tx for just " normal freestyle" use? I have a qx7s so i would have to do the mod on the radio and tx right?
if you lower bandwitch to 11500 you dont need to do any modes
@@actionpev right but is that going to have a significant affect on rc link latency, control and or telemetry capabilities?
Yup. I feel ya
Can these be changed to 2.4ghz
All my Rx are 2.4
When on platform io I dont have the clone repository button and cant copy also doesnt say administrator on top like yours.
you have to install git client to have this option, which kind of makes the tuttorial hard to understand
oh nooo that's going to drive the prices way up ! just kidding introducing new people to this project can only do good :)
Dear Alessandro, i can use ExpressLRS on Radiomaster TX16S after flashing R9M module? Best regards from Brazil.
Sorry, i localize TX16s firmware in your Github page. Tks.
Do you know if the R9M can run D8 mode? I have a Tinyhawk2 Freestyle, wondering if it would work with it?
No, it cannot.
I have R9m with access. Should i even bother doing this?
If ACCESS radio too, NO.
will I need to do the gx7 mod for this? I'm also using the older r9 transmitter
No. Running at 115200 baud rate is fine.
Express only has limited telemetry at the moment. There is a PR to add full telemetry though.
Unfortunately, i copied lua script as your instruction, but on my TX, in the display tab, nothing is shown
You have to set it to show in page 6 or 7 or 7 of 7 in OpenTX.
@@uavtech i copies lua script and i could access it from tools option on my tx
Don't need they mod resistor?
I did not see difference with it, but Devs say you should do it for 400k baud rate.
Hello,
I have Taranis X9D Plus ACCST and R9M ACCST.
From what I understand, a resistor mod is required for the R9M Module.
Also, Taranis X9D (none plus) needs mod as well, but since I have Taranis X9D Plus, no mod is necessary for the transmitter.
Is that correct?
Thanks
hi, did you have any update, ı want use expresslrs but I do not want to deal with this much
ruclips.net/video/wBUamLm51XQ/видео.html
Is the packet loss issue related to why I would get what I called “uncommand stick inputs or jitter?” when flying on adaptive power setting?
use fcc firmware r9m + fport on r9mm
Yes, it is an inconsistency in the frame rate.
@@HERSDT_FPV Thanks for the reply, but this was an issue early on and I posted a betaflight issue in Feb 2019 "github.com/betaflight/betaflight/issues/7585" then I closed it when I realised it was not betaflight related problem, I only asked now as I was curious as to what was causing it back then.😀
As above I have not had any other issue's with my R9M, causing more of a sting when FrySky decided to Cr*p on its
customers. ☹️
I have trouble when I want to flash my RX from lrs configuration I have error bootloader. What should I do.
Get on the ELRS Discord and upload a screen shot.
can use express lrs with opentx 2.3.5 access? thanks
Yup
Does R9 Lite BL work on R9 Lite Pro?
No different chip in pro version. Support is still on the backburner
Can someone explain what basic Telemtry means? Is this including battery voltage and does this work with the TX16s?
If I buy the new 2019 Version of the R9M will I be able to use it with my old Taranis X9D Plus that only supports ACCST?
I would like to know that to? I have the first Taranis X9D
Can i use new receivers with the old module?
yes!
Does anyone have an stl file for the case that fits this? I can't seem to find one please help
STL? Whatever you need, ask in the ExpressLRS Discord.
@@uavtech thanks i figured it out. Happy model has a file for the case on their website that fits their module
Is there any performance difference between 2019 R9M with ELRS and HappyModel ES915TX system........did anybody checked on that...
I don't think anyone did. But from what i understand, the Happy Model is an exact clone of FrSky hardware.
Can anyone tell me if a Taranis x9d+ accst radio has a flexible baud rate?
Look in OpenTX, Globle setting menu (hold down menu button), page 6 of 7, right around ADC Filter check box.
I think not though.
@@uavtech cheers!
thanks for the video. a diy 900hz expresslrs build video would be great
and a comparison to crossfire
Boa tarde, não consegui passar da fase de flashear a opção do firware.elrs. Não aparece a opção de flash
Certifique-se de ter a versão referenciada do OpenTX - do site do github ExpressLRS - baixada e enviada para o seu rádio.
I followed this to the letter, don't hear the startup tones whatever i do. The lua script isn't working either.
Something didn't work right. Get on the ExpressLRS discord to troubleshoot.
nice but I have x9d taranis ACCST version, do I need any mod with my radio? on the discord they want me to do Baudrate crossfire mod from 400k to 115200...what do you think ?
Does anyone know if the tx16s has the inverty thingy or wether I'd have to do the mod? Thanks so much for the video!
No modes needed on TX16S I think. The mod is to the module; the old 2017 versions). The 2019 version of the R9M is fine.
@@uavtech QX7 needs inverter mod (as well as the resistor mod for the r9) to get 400k, same as it does for crossfire. AFAIK.
Which R9 version should I get to use it with X10S express? the 2018accst, 2019 accst or access version?
Any one kown Does the flex Firmware fix the Heart Beat issue?
I don't think so.
@@uavtech ok. Thanks. Guess I'll have to flash ELRS firmaware
Cool! Thought I’d have to get rid of those R9 radio modules and have my FrSky Terranis Access radio. Went with Crossfire because of the lower latency.
So that was the fix huh? At least someone found out about that and addressed the issue.
So this was causing the dropouts?
It's a fix for a lot of things.
No so much a fix as a complete group-up rewrite of the firmware.
Why is it if I enable high power mode for the r9m i have to do a fan case mod, when the normal frsky fw lets it run 1w without any fan?
how to change 915hz to 2.hz ELRS on R9M?
Takes a different module. You can't make the R9M unit transmit at 2.4Ghz.
Can someone help me
Make sure correct antenna for you region.
ELRS or Frsky firmware?

If I've done the crossfire mod to my QX-7 will I need to do the hardware mod in the R9 module?
@@uavtech great, thank you very much.
Do can R9M Access flashed to expressLRS?
Yes, but Access is pretty good. No heart beat issue, fill telemetry and OTA updates (w OTA receivers).
How is the range at 200hz?
github.com/AlessandroAU/ExpressLRS/wiki/ExpressLRS-Videos#range-tests
More than enough for racing and freestyle.
Range will be greater than 150hz crossfire, 200hz ELRS will be approx. same range as 50hz crossfire.
@@alessandrocarcione5663 That's crazy! Any idea when R9M Lite Pro support will be coming? Would love to try it.
I have some issues with the r9m 2019 on my accst qx7. I set down the nauseated in my qx7, but I always get the message telemetry lost, telemetry recovered. Do I have to do the crossfire mod on my qx7 to use the r9m 2019 with express lrs?
Yes and No. Only if you want to use 400,000 baud rate.
What about telemetry, the main reasons I came to FrSky, OpenTx. Yappu LUA and maps, INav LUA?
Do i have to flash my R9 RX? How to flash my R9 mini receiver?
It is in wiki. Will be next video.
Hey UAV Tech, does this beta version of opentx still support crossfire shot as well as ELRS? Just wondering so I don't have to flash back to a different version to be able to use my crossfire module again.
Yep. That and Ghost. Has Crossfire shot in fact (the stuff not in OpenTX 2.3 yet).
Will it failsafe on 200hz quicker?
I have not tested, but the word on the street is ExpressLRS at 200hz mode has more range than Xfire at 50hz mode. Of course to go really crazy with that, lower the rate and up the power output to 1W.
@@uavtech ExpressLRS support up to 2w
Oh, mine only went up to 1W. Maybe just a safety limit in LUA? Or some other setting needs to lower to set to 2W?
@@uavtech wow, that kinda makes me want to switch to R9
We removed the 2W option because of heat issues, actually we found at that some modules even have issues at 250/500mw if you don't add external cooling. For the moment I recommend you stay 250mw or below, or otherwise do a 30min heat soak test and make sure you are not effected.
uavtech will this work for new rx from frsky? i stupidly bought two new r9mx thinking i could do like i did with ota rx and flash it...well it dont power on after firmware but im sure firmware issue. i have a tarantis x9d plus accst 3yr old with 2019 r9m
Yup makes all the r9 series inter-compatible
Great, now i can bind to your drone with uavtech bind_phrase 😝
It would probably fly better. :-P
Can someone confirm that it works with R9M2019?
Yes, it does.
love ur content!

You have to add the extension. Maybe jump on the ExpressLRS Discord for some help. Hopefully someone there has a Mac.

Can I do that on R9M 2019, or only on R9M? 👍👀🇭🇷
2019 module is supported
Hi, I have the R9M 2019 but I use it with flex ACCST firmware, is the stairstepping problem still there or have they fixed it?
Flash to ExpressLRS maybe?
