  • This tutorial demonstrates how to create a composite variable based on the average scores for a set of variables. Specifically, I demonstrate how to use the rowMeans function to create a composite variable. When creating a composite variable for a multi-item measure/scale, we sometimes refer to the composite variable as an overall scale score variable, as it is intended to indicate the overall level of the concept that multi-item measure/scale was designed to assess.
