That was an impressive mini lecture. Even though I don't speak latin, it was fascinating to listen and hear so many recognizable words compared how their distant permutations are used today.
Gotta love how you not only wrote and recited an entire speech in Latin, but managed to inject very natural-sounding humor into it for that extra bit of verisimilitude and humanity. Even though I needed the subtitles to understand the speech (because I know precious little Latin), I was enthralled. Very impressive!
Haha thanks. I'm not 100% in character since I keep smiling at my own silly jokes like Jerry Seinfeld, but Rufus is definitely a part I am playing here. It's fun, kind of like acting on stage.
As a Spanish speaker, when I watch this a second and third time, it's amazing how I begin to actually "hear" the words and have them make sense. After watching three to four times, I can "understand" about 50-70% of what's being said without reading the captions. Language and the organization of thought is a fascinating thing.

@joseantonioestevemiralles3791 Si, es cierto? A la misma vez, los lenguajes del Latín se traen un tono semejante con la emoción. En Inglés, usamos muchas palabras para describir los sentimientos, pero en los lenguajes del Latín, combinamos las palabras con la emoción directa en el tono. Por eso, se llaman lenguajes de la pasión. 😛

That was cool! The most Latin I ever heard spoken at one time before watching the video was the exchange between Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday in 'Tombstone'. As I listened to the presentation, I could hear the future echos of Spanish, Italian and Romanian in some of the words.
Thank you for making Latin an interesting language to learn again ...my grandmother already pass away shes the only person in the family that can speak Latin and I miss her ...
Fin dall'inizio della saga di Rufus ho notato la straordinaria capacità di riportare in vita il Latino classico in un modo assolutamente reale. È chiaro che questo non è solo il prodotto delle sue capacità linguistiche ma anche della naturalità con cui interpreta il personaggio. Che modo di viaggiare nel tempo, mi stupisce. Amico mio, non sto scherzando quando dico che prima o poi Netflix ti scoprirà e diventerai parte dei suoi contenuti. Non ho il minimo dubbio. Salve Lucius!

This doesn’t mean much I know lol but I’ve been using Duolingo for Latin for 129 days so far, and I understood a sentence! You actually translated it differently than the literal so that was interesting. The caption said “and why do we do this?” But you asked “why do we make this journey?” You’re an inspiration my dude. Keep it up.
Grande..im from Rome...and the funny thing is I understand exactly all the words that this gentleman says..most vocabulary is integrated into the Italian language and some in our Romanesco dialet.....S.P.Q.R.
I'd swear that just by listening to him and reading his Latin words, I could almost piece together what he's saying based on the Latin roots of the words in an English translation.
Haven't seen anything so impressive and fun for a long time! Please keep it up! By the way, I still remember the time when Latin was used widely in the medical profession.
As the legionary was speaking, I was thinking 'oh we also have a trajan's column here in Romania, how many columns did this guy raise?', and then I felt immediately SEEN and vaguely offended by this roman soldier. Wonderful work! Though I say that I'm offended, the column is still somewhat of an artifact of a founding myth of my country, as I don't speak Dacian, I speak very new-fashioned Latin. Seeing the first page of my récit national or roman national (haha roman) presented in such a way by someone who was there is a wonderful experience. These videos are fascinating, and those people are very lucky to sit in the auditorium. Cheers!
I actually dont speak latin nor have ever learned it but because of your last few videos you have intrigued me about this language and the Roman history. Great video and I cant wait for more!
God I hope Producers and game companies will inite you to translate and guide voice actors on Latin. There's no way you can be ignored with such skill.
Learned Latin in Montessori school, 1st-6th grade in Wooster. They taught me the vocabulary but never learned proper pronunciation, typical word order, nor how conjugations worked. I’ve been trying to relearn the proper pronunciation and grammar. Your channel has helped me a lot. I hope to speak in the same way as you do. We used to learn through the “Minimus” books.
I like how you accentuate important points with hand gestures and speak Latin intensely and emotionally. It's not unlike hearing modern Italian and Spanish being gestured and spoken by current speakers in their respective nations. No doubt that part of the Roman influence has lasted all these centuries via the speech patterns and gestures (and helps with the authenticity- to say nothing of keeping the audience ready for more)!
Latin certainly sounds awesome. He's just giving lecture and he sounds epic. No wonder their war time speeches could convice people to fight to the death.
This was great to watch! I have always wanted to re-enact Imperial Rome, however my passion has been WW2 for over 30 years. One day I will put together a Roman kit with lorica squamata and Italic d helm. I always liked the Signifer look. Gloria ad Romam!

Data smoking a pipe is very appropriate for this video LOL
That was cool! The most Latin I ever heard spoken at one time before watching the video was the exchange between Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday in 'Tombstone'.
As I listened to the presentation, I could hear the future echos of Spanish, Italian and Romanian in some of the words.
More people would take up Latin classes if the professors delivered them in Legionary uniforms.
Thank you for making Latin an interesting language to learn again ...my grandmother already pass away shes the only person in the family that can speak Latin and I miss her ...
As a speaker of three romance languages, I was surprised that my comprehension of this talk was about 90%!
Please tell us which three languages are these!
@@danapablazaI would assume Spanish, French and Italian. But he could know Romanian too
@@Michael_Sangworththere is more too
I speak portuguese and It was a struggle to understand some parts. I imagine french and italian would be the best languages for this.
@@flaviocardoso573 you are right, i understood almost everything With eyes closed but his accent make things a bit hard haha
Fin dall'inizio della saga di Rufus ho notato la straordinaria capacità di riportare in vita il Latino classico in un modo assolutamente reale. È chiaro che questo non è solo il prodotto delle sue capacità linguistiche ma anche della naturalità con cui interpreta il personaggio. Che modo di viaggiare nel tempo, mi stupisce. Amico mio, non sto scherzando quando dico che prima o poi Netflix ti scoprirà e diventerai parte dei suoi contenuti. Non ho il minimo dubbio.
Salve Lucius!
This is what I call living history and reenacting. You are indeed a model in your field, an inspiration.
From a hairy Gaul (shaven-headed, actually, but well).
Keep it up.
Have you read the Good Book yet -- Lingua Latina per se Illustrate by Hans Ørberg?
Luke has readings of the chapters elsewhere on this channel.
Grande..im from Rome...and the funny thing is I understand exactly all the words that this gentleman says..most vocabulary is integrated into the Italian language and some in our Romanesco dialet.....S.P.Q.R.
Please do more with this character! He's very charming. Haha
7:05 "Ego sum ille tertius a laeva" instantly broke me! haha 😂
Hahaha so glad you liked that joke.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Awesome! Give a ted talk next time!
Tell them to invite me! haha
You be the second presenter to wear Armor on a TED talk 😂
Un soldado Romano en la ciudad de Nueva York. Te saludamos! Adelante con tu sermon. Tienes mucho que reportar
Thanks!
Cheers!
Shame on those subways for their discrimination against our glorious legionaries. Loved this video!
From Hispania, good job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I mean this guy knows so well the phrenology it is like seeing the empire again in its glory
Good presentation! I haven't heard Latin since I was in class. Well done.
Mirabilis dictio fuit! Bene structum dictumque. Superbus debes, et velimus videre plures!
Absolutely the greatest speech of all time. Thank you, Patches.
Wow this is so cool my man in living the dream much love
I actually dont speak latin nor have ever learned it but because of your last few videos you have intrigued me about this language and the Roman history. Great video and I cant wait for more!
Scorpio performs the part magnificently--my greatest congratulations!
Thank you!
Ok that's it. Even tho I won't use it so much in my everyday life, I NEED to learn latin right now! What a powerful language.
Absolutely amazing!!
You are amazing, this presentation made my night.
Questo è encomiabile da parte tua. Grazie
Grazie a te!
This looks like an amazing presentation you did. I love it. 👍
Gratia
God I hope Producers and game companies will inite you to translate and guide voice actors on Latin. There's no way you can be ignored with such skill.
I took four years of Latin in high school and learned more about English grammar and vocabulary. I really like your RUclips presentations.
Fantastico! Grazie!
Rūfus, your speech is AWESOME X/X!
I'd watch & listen to you Luke, reading the telephone directory. Absolutely divine man. X
Truly exceptional 😊.
Wonderful
Bravo
It was an amazing presentation Decimus Helvidius Rufus. I enjoyed from second 1 until the end. Round of applause
Glad you enjoyed it!
I came upon this by accident. What an incredible surprise 😮.
Truly enjoyed so much, did not expect that.
Thanks for sharing 👍 😊
I like how you accentuate important points with hand gestures and speak Latin intensely and emotionally. It's not unlike hearing modern Italian and Spanish being gestured and spoken by current speakers in their respective nations. No doubt that part of the Roman influence has lasted all these centuries via the speech patterns and gestures (and helps with the authenticity- to say nothing of keeping the audience ready for more)!
I was fully entertained! Amazing how fluent you are (and the audience).
The armor is awesome!
This is great!
Awesome!
I love these videos, don’t ever stop making them. For the Emperor.
This guy would convince me to join Caesar's Legion
You’d need convincing?
That was so great! I love Rufus, he makes leaning fun. :)
Thank you for reminding me to study. Salvete!
Super cool - thanks so much!!
This brother makes you feel the Empire very much alive.
Placuit mihi multum!!!! Optima presentatiō! Vērus legiōnārius fuīstī per XVI minūtas!!
Hahae utinam. Grātiās amīce
Loved the reference to Gladiator at the end: "Nonne oblecatmini??"
I wish latin was taught like this in my day
Love it man!
Excellent love it Latin sounds such a cool language didn't understand a word but great to listen to
Latin certainly sounds awesome. He's just giving lecture and he sounds epic. No wonder their war time speeches could convice people to fight to the death.
Grazie! !!!!!
Amazing
Really interesting video, I'm binge watching your videos now.
*Carthago delenda est.*
Pure genius. So much wit and humor!
This was great to watch! I have always wanted to re-enact Imperial Rome, however my passion has been WW2 for over 30 years. One day I will put together a Roman kit with lorica squamata and Italic d helm. I always liked the Signifer look. Gloria ad Romam!
I just adore you and what you are doing with this channel.
Honestly...great acting. Like a Roman soldier really did come to our era.
You definitely need a TED talk 😂
Hell yeah 👍
will it be like sam hyde's ted talk?
Everybody: “Dead languages are useless, and those who love them are nerdy and boring.”
Luke: “Hold my posca”.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The nerd is a dragon it’s how they become one that matters
Beautiful! I shed an actual tear 🥲
