I think it was common for that period. They wanted to keep the audience excited with dancing and theatrics, not actual singing live. All that changed when lip sync was used on overload during the late 90s and people started doubting artists and their vocal talent. So they needed to prove themselves by singing live, and having little choreo to match.
Back then lip-synching was the norm especially when it came to high level dance performances like this...I could nit imagine actually singing to this performance.

Lemonade for instance was original and versatile, it had genres from pop to rock n roll to country and it was an hour long thing. Beyoncé has been credited for bringing visual albums back and for moving the normal album release day from tuesday to friday with her self titled album. I definitely think that Janet had more competition but there are a fair share of good artists now as well. Adele for examples absolutely destroys beyoncé (and pretty much everyone else right now) when it comes to sales. Gaga is a amazing performer so beyoncé has competition with her. DPRD JZ I agree with everything except for calling lady gaga a basic pop hoe. She is anything but basic, has an amazing voice, is a great songwriter, has fantastic performances (like 2017 superbowl) and can also dance (but obviously not as good as janet).
Frehni Babulno I have seen her live, she is a great vocalist and a decent entertainer when she is not doing anything gross. However, song writing doesn't make one a good artist these days, Taylor Swift writes her own music yet her songs are generic as hell, pop music at its lowest points.

The Royal Variety show presents a very distorted picture of British audiences. It's clean light entertainment for the royal family basically. Normally British audiences wouldn't be sat around dining tables wearing suits, which you can see that they're doing in the video here.

@M T No, I disagree. Lipping, not singing live, whether or not to your own vocals, is still lipping. The only crime in lipping is lying to your audience when they came for a live performance. I think most people know that artists who do more than just sing, like Janet, Madonna, Michael, lipped sometimes, though MJ unevenly did A LOT, but wouldn't you feel cheated if an entire concert were lipped, even to their own voices?

@M T Ok forget about artists like the aforementioned ones. Take ones like the late Whitney, Mariah, those whose live voices you go to hear. Would you be satisfied if Mariah lipped to playback for 90 minutes? I would be pissed and probably walk out of the venue, because I can tell the difference. They all playback at certain points, but to lip sync straight through, even to their own vocals would be a sin to me and worthy of a refund demand. Also, you're thinking with a modern brain. In this performance, again, this was when the lip-synching police hung out on every corner lol.

I think it was common for that period. They wanted to keep the audience excited with dancing and theatrics, not actual singing live. All that changed when lip sync was used on overload during the late 90s and people started doubting artists and their vocal talent. So they needed to prove themselves by singing live, and having little choreo to match.
Back then lip-synching was the norm especially when it came to high level dance performances like this...I could nit imagine actually singing to this performance.

A young Janet (as well as a 50 year old Janet) still outdances her by far, while Beyoncé can sing Janet under a table. Janet was never a belter or a powerhouse vocalist. Yet, she has attempted to sing many genres including pop, rock, rnb, rap, country. I never denied Beyoncé's skills as a performer and I am not hater. As far as Beyoncé only doing things that were all ready done I can kinda see your point but janet has been doing things that were done as well. Beyoncé has originality to her albums and performances which janet had as well, and I think that is one of many things that make a artist great. Lemonade for instance was original and versatile, it had genres from pop to rock n roll to country and it was an hour long thing. Beyoncé has been credited for bringing visual albums back and for moving the normal album release day from tuesday to friday with her self titled album. I definitely think that Janet had more competition but there are a fair share of good artists now as well. Adele for examples absolutely destroys beyoncé (and pretty much everyone else right now) when it comes to sales. Gaga is a amazing performer so beyoncé has competition with her. I dont bow down to her either and I am definitely not saying that anyone should, but I do think the criticism is (most times) not really constructive.
