The Patriot A veritable masterpiece within its genre of revolutionary war films. True to the prevailing attitudes and sentiments of the time, notably the conflict between American patriots and British loyalists, it is loosely based on the actual conflict between the Swamp Fox, Francis Marion, and his antagonist, Banastre Tarleton. With his great expertise in guerrilla warfare developed in the French and Indian War on behalf of the Crown, Marion eluded and befuddled Tarleton, who had indeed established a reputation for brutality nearly matching that of Tavington, who filled his role in the movie.

This movie is loosely based on Francis Marion. He was the first person in that time period to use guerilla warfare tactics. The british fought in lines because they wer trying to civilize war, but he would ambush from the forrests and swamps. Thats how he got his nickname "Swamp Fox"

If I remember correctly you were considered a good shot in the British army if you can make five hits on a 3ft target at 100 yards

The reason they fought in formations like that during those times was because it was the only way for them to control large armies. The invention of the musket made it possible to pull someone off the street and make them an effective soldier with minimal training. This allowed armies to easily grow their forces to sizes never seen before, but created another problem: massive forces like that would quickly descend into chaos if not strictly controlled. So they set them up in formations and used drums and flags to send commands. Believe it or not, even with how slow and lumbering they seem, these types of forces were the height of military prowess at the time and would absolutely decimate smaller forces. Only the invention of modern electronic communications were we able to control large forces without having to resort to these tactics.

@@Scav271 Actually you could and the British actually trained their men to take careful shots! But it may not hit where you aim PRECISELY, it has been done and shown to be done, you can nail someone with these at 100 yards or so, and in fact; battles started WAY farther apart, unlike in this movie, close is not the start of the battle, it was for the kill, drive them off, capture, destroy, or all of the above.

That was only if the long gun was a smooth bore and not a rifle. You were lucky to get more than 2 shots out of a rifle. After 4 or 5 shots the rifling would get so clogged with black powder residue that you had to clean the barrel. Smoothbore muskets were accurate out to 50 to 75 yards, which is why soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder and fired in volleys in the hope they'd hit something. In the American Revolution and through the Mexican War, the bayonet was queen of the battlefield. I own an exact reproduction of a Brown Bess Musket and an exact duplicate of a Pennsylvania Long Rifle. I have fired both numerous times, so I speak from experience.

The British Colonel Tavington is loosely based on the real Colonel Banastre Tarleton. Tarleton was a savage, reckless, but very brave commander of the British Legion Cavalry. He is best known for sending a flag of truce with an offer of surrender then slaughtering 113 American. This act enraged the Patriots who later defeated Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens. Nathaniel Greene led the Americans to victory there, not the Swamp Fox. That battle is seen in the movie when Conwallis is finally defeated. In the Battle of Cowpens Tarleton left 86% of his troops dead, wounded, or captured. In the final Battle of Yorktown Cornwallis is defeated with the assistance of the French Fleet. After the battle, the Americans gave a dinner and invited all the British officers with the exception of Tarleton. Tarleton returned to England, served in government and opposed the abolitionist movement to the day he died.
One of my biggest objections to this movie is the burning in the church of the towns people. No such thing was ever recorded in history. While there were brutal British officers they did not behave as the Nazis did 160 years later.
I am so familiar with the battles in the Carolinas because I taught North Carolina history for 20 years and all the battles I mentioned are within a 3 hour drive of my house. The site of the Battle of Gilford Court House is about 30 minutes from where I live.

It is ironic that they chose 2 Australians to play these American revolutionaries, as Aussies are still subjects of the British Crown. The Canadians had the right idea, especially when they burnt down the White House. Just jokes - its all in the past now and we are all mates again for the most part. All these films like Brave Heart etc. are very creative with the truth and like to portray the British in a certain way to make them the villains, when for the most part the British have been on the side of the good and have done many things like abolish slavery.

What rock were you living under when the referendum on becoming a republic was rejected by the Australian populace. It is why we still have the Union Jack on our flag. It is still why people in Australia receive knighthoods. We are a constitutional monarchy, hence all Australians are subjects of the British crown - even indigenous Australians. I have 2 proper degrees including law and post graduate qualifications but any child could tell you that. Federation just gave us certain rights of self-government. Someone wisely said, "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." The truth is many American colonialists were loyal to the British king and reluctantly sought independence from Great Britain after years of unjust treatment knowing a brutal war would result. Read the American Declaration of Independence that outlines those grievances. Mel Gibson's character was a veteran of war and, therefore, like most Soldiers the most reluctant for war. All tyrants whether they are Adolph Hitler, Vlad Putin or the British King George by nature crave power and have little regard for human lives except their own. They gain and maintain power through fear and the demonstrated threat of violence. Contrary to the pervasive perception that Americans love war, most Americans abhor war while recognizing the only way to ensure they and any other people can live freely and peacefully is the overwhelming use of violent force against evil. Watching a sheepdog battling a wolf threatening the sheep, it is very hard to tell the difference between the two. The wolf comes to destroy the sheep while the sheepdog violently protects the sheep. In the same way and certainly not perfect, the American military fought many wars to destroy tyranny so that other freedom loving people can live free like Americans. The past 70 years of peace including the fall of the Soviet Union and communist tyranny in Europe were only possible as American Soldiers, over 300,000 Americans during the height of the Cold War, sacrificed time with their families and if need be their lives defending Europeans against tyranny like the kind on display in Ukraine and Israel on October 7. This is why countries like Bulgaria are free today.

Officers were easily identified because they wore brass breast plates around their necks. American sharpshooters used to aim for the brest plates. It was quite common for British officers leaving for the colonies to write their last will and testament before they left.

I think officers did that just because they were going to war and not because of light infantry

Mel Gibson can make historical accurate films but this is not one of them , When it comes to the British Mel will do his very best to portray them in a horrid light and the rebels as some sought of heavenly beacon , In reality nobody liked the Americans the Native peoples sided with the British and the Black people also chose the British not all but the vast majority , Unfortunately the Americans won with the help of Spain and France and so Slavery till 1865 and Jim Crow till 1969 was the result of all men being created equal.

My grandparents generations had 11,10,8 and 7 kids. They were born in the early 1900's. 1914,1919,1926 and 1928. The 2 born in the 20's saw a new century the ones born in the teens died in 1995 and 1998. Things have changed since then.

Yup Gibson makes entertaining historical epics but doesn’t put much historical accuracy in them. Patriot is about as historically accurate as Braveheart

I agree. While there are elements of truth this movie should not be used as history.
