Coming back to watch this the second time, I can imagine how Owen is lying there, sure Curt is going to come save him. I can imagine him holding his faith for Curt as long as possible until he realizes that Curt isn’t coming- he won’t be coming. He realizes that he has been abandoned by his lover and left for dead.
kind of iconic that curt's character's name is just his actual name. they were writing this show like yeah actually we can't turn curt mega into more of a badass spy name. he's still curt mega.

I swear the Brosenthal spends 90% of this musical dead/knocked out at the corner of the stage during enlongated scenes. Love him and this (if you couldn't tell... 3rd comment on this video alone, the one that was longest ago was 1week that was the first time i watched this. its been a week and i've watched this literally 16times. no exageration xD)
This musical is 100% the type of musical you need to watch at least twice. And if you dont youre seriously missing out on so much. The jokes, the forshadowing, the general theme, and most of all the crippling sadness.

SPOILERS AHEAD... ...OH MY GOSH there were SO MANY hidden things in this one scene! There relationship: Owen calls him "love", they hold each other at the beginning of the song and it's really tender, the subliminal "personal history does have it's benefits" telling us that he knows that he's ticklish (implying that they spend a lot of time with each other outside of work), and they argue like two people who are in a VERY close relationship, and later when Mega takes Tatiana's arm, he only takes it with one hand, but with Owen he uses both hands. I remember thinking all of these things were odd, but I just assumed it was theatrical! Also, I can't believe I didn't notice this (I'm sure there were people that did), but when Tatiana sings about betrayal, they are both holding onto each other and then they turn their faces away and then turn back again. HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THAT?!?!?!?!?! Wish I knew Tin Can Bros was a thing sooner! How the hell have I not heard of these guys?!
Spoiler again. _Will you live to see tomorrow_ _Or die another day_ Well.. both indicate that NO DONE WOULD DIE THAT DAY. It struck me as odd first, but _as usual_ I ignored that..
Watch the first scene again and notice how it mirrors Torture Tango. Mary Kate singing on the raised platform. Owen, in disguise, torturing Curt, who is tied up.
hella spoilers below, ok, for first time viewers, but like EVERY time i revisit this, im blown away by the sheer amount of foreshadowing and subversion of expected meaning that they managed to pack into a single song. so i want to go through them all because damn is it supremely good or wHAT *time to save the world again:* curt literally botched every mission and was told how futile trying to take down chimera would be *time to get the girl again:* as in literally, catch that fuckin girl mega she ran away with the gat dang bomb *time to do or die, time to stay alive:* haha guess what owen alot of the lyrics in the between here (didnt wanna write them all out) are kind of foreshadowy for what happens immediately after this (the incident which i will call pre- and post- banana), when curt stops being a spy and has to learn how to be a spy... again *once a spy, always a spy:* curt and owen in that order post-banana *the warmest hello to the coldest goodbye:* there it is, folks. the plot *spies never die, spies are forever:* REMEMBER, REMEEEEMBER (there will be a surprise quiz in act 2) *time to buckle up, lets go:* this doesnt have anything to do with anything else but do you think mr curt 'drink martinis and drive again' mega has ever worn a seat belt in his entire special agent life *theres an evil power to overthrow:* its funny that curt the protagonist is NOT the one to kill von nazi (the red-herring bad guy/evil power) and DOESNT come close to stopping chimera (the evil power represented by the secret true bad guy) *time to show them what you got, be the hero, take the shot:* post-banana, curt's got basically no game whatsoever and is in fact constantly being saved by tatiana (after she stops aligning with the antagonists). i mean, he gets a person killed, but the only person he actually shoots throughout the entirety of the musical, excluding pre-banana... is owen. and it is not a very heroic moment. ouch *do you wanna live, yes or no:* to curt at the beginning of post-banana events: ARE YOU FUCKING DEPRESSED ENOUGH, MAN? HAUNTED BY YOUR COWARDICE AND FAILURE, IS YOUR STRUGGLE TO FORGIVE YOURSELF WORTH THE HORROR OF STAYING ALIVE? to owen at the end of post-banana events: YOU COULD HAVE DISARMED CURT SO EASILY, WHICH YOU SHOWED US EARLIER AS THE DMA. DID YOU COME SO FAR LIVING ON ANGER ALONE ONLY TO HESITATE AT THE MOMENT OF PAYOFF AND INSTEAD CHOKE ON YOUR OWN GHOST? *time to decide who will be saved:* curt is saved from himself, his loneliness. owen is saved from this mortal coil (in continuing with the ghost metaphor). and tatiana is saved from HER loneliness as well, though she also thinks she and her family are safe from the KGB *who do you trust, who do you betray:* like, big oof, y'know? just ouch. mega bummer. and the fact that in the choreography, curt and owen go from facing each other to facing away/drifting apart from each other as she sings that? thats very good shit but very painful. curt trusted owen pre-banana only to be betrayed by him in a major way post-banana. and owen FELT betrayed by curt for basically leaving him to die, so he was only repaying the favor, but he was also betrayed by tatiana who in doing so opened the path for curt to slowly end up trusting her *will you live to see tomorrow, or die another day:* this is literally owen's fate. he DOES live to see tomorrow, but he also ends up dying on some other day anyway. you could also argue that this is curt emotionally. he is the one who 'survived' technically but the pain of it drives him to drink heavily. and since alcohol is a poison, he's literally poisoning himself, killing himself a little bit every day as a note: when i first saw this i totally thought the bad guys who surround curt and owen were singing "spies arent forever" because, like, theyre bad guys. and i cant unhear it even though the lyrics say that im wrong. besides, i think its a neat idea. anyway *spies. masters of disguise. gentlemen of lies. dont you know its do or die:* curt NEVER wears a single disguise unless you count that awful beard he grows, so this is more of a description of owen- who was, objectively, the better spy *lurking in the shadows, watching your every move. tall dark and dangerous, a man with nothing to lose:* im inclined to believe this is about owen again, especially because we get 2 scenes post-banana where the memory of owen looms over curt like a phantom, and we can assume curt sees him often. not literally but in his mind. beyond that, owen is taller than curt, dark enough and dangerous enough to kill thousands of people. and he has nothing to lose because, really, he already lost everything when he 'died' the first time. plus, he's so confident that he CANT lose even if he dies for real because chimera is still huge and formidable without him *women cant resist him, villains cant escape. the sharpest of shooters:* so then this must also be describing owen. theres the joke that the majority of the DMA's victims (the kickstarter backers) were women, so, those women certainly couldnt resist his knife or gun or whatever. and to my recollection, many of the people owen killed within the scope of the musical were part of the bad guys. thats not saying much since it seems like owen considered pretty much everyone to be expendable, but hey, its something *your heart he'll break:* and boy, he absolutely does. curt literally tells owen "you know you broke my heart?" repeating the whole 'once a spy always a spy' part in the somber reprise (which is ENTIRELY about owen) is honestly the final clue nailed into the coffin of foreshadowing, that owen is super duper coming back as a villain later in the musical i'd like you all to know that this took me 3 hours to do. that is all, thank you
Also another forshadowing moment: notice how, when they're standing on the balcony, owen is in the red light and curt in the blue. It kinda has 2 meanings: owen: bad, curt: good and owen: dies, curt: lives.
Spoilers: . The first few lines after Owen falls are telling us exactly what happens to him. It foreshadows that he is the villain, and he is the one lurking in the shadows. Its so perfect and beautiful, I love when musicals do that
Owen: *dies* MK: *sings a slow, bitterly sad ballad with her gorgeous voice to build the saddness* *slow fade to black as the piano fades out* Ending card: *electric guitar and bright colours*

SPOILERS!!! okay guys before turning into the dma owen's last sung word is "forever", foreshadowing that, ya know, he's not gone. It's weirdly minor for the song, making it a bit sinister. His last spoken words are "Oh Curt Mega, you're going to be the death of me", while obviously, Curt is the one who pulls the trigger on him at the end
From the way she slides up to her High notes it seems like she was self taught, at least to an extent, which is super impressive when you hear her belts and vibrato. May Kate wiles is a powerhouse
*spoiler alert* Okay so I watched the end and after the big reveal I can see curt and Owens relationship!! I can't believe I missed it but it came true this is AMAZING

⚠️SPOILERS, make sure to read this only after you've watching the whole musical!⚠️ - Oh my God. He limited the blast. HE LIMITED THE BLAST THAT'S HOW HE SURV- jagskHsjskshdj So while Curt was being reckless and not following instructions, setting the timer too short and not telling Owen, and littering... Owen was actually being a good spy and relocking the safety barricades. (Also like I see everyone blame this whole thing on Curt littering but honestly he's just really freaking reckless. It's clear that he's already made a LOT of mistakes due to it.) Objectively, based on what we see in the whole musical, Owen really was the better spy. But... He let the hate get to him and ajshajsjsj.
Let's be honest, other spy movies leads are probably as reckless, or close to as reckless as Mega. All the action-packed thrill seeking spy stuff they do wouldn't happen if they were in and out unseen, now would it. Owen IS an outstanding spy, but more of an outlier. Hell, bond endangers the lives of multiple love interests all the time. (Also, hey... Owen clearly indulged in some of Curt's action movie shenanigans. He pushed the timer to 4 minutes when Mega said 5, he has to take SOME responsibility.)

The choreography and lighting kill it with this number, often literally, because a lot of people die in this one. It's also the tightest 10 in any musical I've ever seen, establishing the world, the characters, the motives, the interpersonal relationships, the backstory, etc. All while playing an absolutely killer two piece number. And the dancing. Omg, I'm in love. Curt and Owen play off eachother so beautifully.
I fell in love with the "digital ticket" version and didn't think anything could possibly be better, other than actually seeing it live. I was wrong. This is spectacular. The editing, the credits, the audio quality, the subtitles...it's already an incredible show, but this takes it to a whole new level. I might have to buy the digital download; not sure if I can wait for the rest of it!

the first time i watched this musical i thought it was a funny little spy musical with a lot of gay subtext that i was reading too much into. upon rewatching it, it isn't subtext, it's incredibly clear text. honestly some of the best rep i've seen.
Anyone notice that at 1:50 when Owen asks Curt 'where do you get off' and Curt genuinely responds, Owen jerks back surprised but then starts unzipping his coat, reaching for the feather... Feeling a bit hot under the collar there, eh ;)

SPOILERS AHEAD...
...OH MY GOSH there were SO MANY hidden things in this one scene! There relationship: Owen calls him "love", they hold each other at the beginning of the song and it's really tender, the subliminal "personal history does have it's benefits" telling us that he knows that he's ticklish (implying that they spend a lot of time with each other outside of work), and they argue like two people who are in a VERY close relationship, and later when Mega takes Tatiana's arm, he only takes it with one hand, but with Owen he uses both hands. I remember thinking all of these things were odd, but I just assumed it was theatrical!
Also, I can't believe I didn't notice this (I'm sure there were people that did), but when Tatiana sings about betrayal, they are both holding onto each other and then they turn their faces away and then turn back again. HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THAT?!?!?!?!?!
Wish I knew Tin Can Bros was a thing sooner! How the hell have I not heard of these guys?!

Watch the first scene again and notice how it mirrors Torture Tango. Mary Kate singing on the raised platform. Owen, in disguise, torturing Curt, who is tied up.

EVERY time i revisit this, im blown away by the sheer amount of foreshadowing and subversion of expected meaning that they managed to pack into a single song. so i want to go through them all because damn is it supremely good or wHAT
*time to save the world again:* curt literally botched every mission and was told how futile trying to take down chimera would be
*time to get the girl again:* as in literally, catch that fuckin girl mega she ran away with the gat dang bomb
*time to do or die, time to stay alive:* haha guess what owen
alot of the lyrics in the between here (didnt wanna write them all out) are kind of foreshadowy for what happens immediately after this (the incident which i will call pre- and post- banana), when curt stops being a spy and has to learn how to be a spy... again
*once a spy, always a spy:* curt and owen in that order post-banana
*the warmest hello to the coldest goodbye:* there it is, folks. the plot
*spies never die, spies are forever:* REMEMBER, REMEEEEMBER (there will be a surprise quiz in act 2)
*time to buckle up, lets go:* this doesnt have anything to do with anything else but do you think mr curt 'drink martinis and drive again' mega has ever worn a seat belt in his entire special agent life
*theres an evil power to overthrow:* its funny that curt the protagonist is NOT the one to kill von nazi (the red-herring bad guy/evil power) and DOESNT come close to stopping chimera (the evil power represented by the secret true bad guy)
*time to show them what you got, be the hero, take the shot:* post-banana, curt's got basically no game whatsoever and is in fact constantly being saved by tatiana (after she stops aligning with the antagonists). i mean, he gets a person killed, but the only person he actually shoots throughout the entirety of the musical, excluding pre-banana... is owen. and it is not a very heroic moment. ouch
*do you wanna live, yes or no:* to curt at the beginning of post-banana events: ARE YOU FUCKING DEPRESSED ENOUGH, MAN? HAUNTED BY YOUR COWARDICE AND FAILURE, IS YOUR STRUGGLE TO FORGIVE YOURSELF WORTH THE HORROR OF STAYING ALIVE? to owen at the end of post-banana events: YOU COULD HAVE DISARMED CURT SO EASILY, WHICH YOU SHOWED US EARLIER AS THE DMA. DID YOU COME SO FAR LIVING ON ANGER ALONE ONLY TO HESITATE AT THE MOMENT OF PAYOFF AND INSTEAD CHOKE ON YOUR OWN GHOST?
*time to decide who will be saved:* curt is saved from himself, his loneliness. owen is saved from this mortal coil (in continuing with the ghost metaphor). and tatiana is saved from HER loneliness as well, though she also thinks she and her family are safe from the KGB
*who do you trust, who do you betray:* like, big oof, y'know? just ouch. mega bummer. and the fact that in the choreography, curt and owen go from facing each other to facing away/drifting apart from each other as she sings that? thats very good shit but very painful. curt trusted owen pre-banana only to be betrayed by him in a major way post-banana. and owen FELT betrayed by curt for basically leaving him to die, so he was only repaying the favor, but he was also betrayed by tatiana who in doing so opened the path for curt to slowly end up trusting her
*will you live to see tomorrow, or die another day:* this is literally owen's fate. he DOES live to see tomorrow, but he also ends up dying on some other day anyway. you could also argue that this is curt emotionally. he is the one who 'survived' technically but the pain of it drives him to drink heavily. and since alcohol is a poison, he's literally poisoning himself, killing himself a little bit every day
as a note: when i first saw this i totally thought the bad guys who surround curt and owen were singing "spies arent forever" because, like, theyre bad guys. and i cant unhear it even though the lyrics say that im wrong. besides, i think its a neat idea. anyway
*spies. masters of disguise. gentlemen of lies. dont you know its do or die:* curt NEVER wears a single disguise unless you count that awful beard he grows, so this is more of a description of owen- who was, objectively, the better spy
*lurking in the shadows, watching your every move. tall dark and dangerous, a man with nothing to lose:* im inclined to believe this is about owen again, especially because we get 2 scenes post-banana where the memory of owen looms over curt like a phantom, and we can assume curt sees him often. not literally but in his mind. beyond that, owen is taller than curt, dark enough and dangerous enough to kill thousands of people. and he has nothing to lose because, really, he already lost everything when he 'died' the first time. plus, he's so confident that he CANT lose even if he dies for real because chimera is still huge and formidable without him
*women cant resist him, villains cant escape. the sharpest of shooters:* so then this must also be describing owen. theres the joke that the majority of the DMA's victims (the kickstarter backers) were women, so, those women certainly couldnt resist his knife or gun or whatever. and to my recollection, many of the people owen killed within the scope of the musical were part of the bad guys. thats not saying much since it seems like owen considered pretty much everyone to be expendable, but hey, its something
*your heart he'll break:* and boy, he absolutely does. curt literally tells owen "you know you broke my heart?"
repeating the whole 'once a spy always a spy' part in the somber reprise (which is ENTIRELY about owen) is honestly the final clue nailed into the coffin of foreshadowing, that owen is super duper coming back as a villain later in the musical

Also another forshadowing moment: notice how, when they're standing on the balcony, owen is in the red light and curt in the blue. It kinda has 2 meanings: owen: bad, curt: good and owen: dies, curt: lives.
Just out of curiosity, was Curt in the Blue light and Owen in the red foreshadowing to Owen being evil, or am just making that up?

The first few lines after Owen falls are telling us exactly what happens to him. It foreshadows that he is the villain, and he is the one lurking in the shadows. Its so perfect and beautiful, I love when musicals do that

His last spoken words are "Oh Curt Mega, you're going to be the death of me", while obviously, Curt is the one who pulls the trigger on him at the end

So while Curt was being reckless and not following instructions, setting the timer too short and not telling Owen, and littering... Owen was actually being a good spy and relocking the safety barricades. (Also like I see everyone blame this whole thing on Curt littering but honestly he's just really freaking reckless. It's clear that he's already made a LOT of mistakes due to it.) Objectively, based on what we see in the whole musical, Owen really was the better spy. But... He let the hate get to him and ajshajsjsj.
Let's be honest, other spy movies leads are probably as reckless, or close to as reckless as Mega.
All the action-packed thrill seeking spy stuff they do wouldn't happen if they were in and out unseen, now would it.
Owen IS an outstanding spy, but more of an outlier. Hell, bond endangers the lives of multiple love interests all the time.
(Also, hey... Owen clearly indulged in some of Curt's action movie shenanigans. He pushed the timer to 4 minutes when Mega said 5, he has to take SOME responsibility.)

The choreography and lighting kill it with this number, often literally, because a lot of people die in this one.
It's also the tightest 10 in any musical I've ever seen, establishing the world, the characters, the motives, the interpersonal relationships, the backstory, etc.
All while playing an absolutely killer two piece number.
And the dancing. Omg, I'm in love. Curt and Owen play off eachother so beautifully.

I say this every time, but this is the most tragic and wonderful story, the characters are written so well and it’s so underrated...
I fell in love with the "digital ticket" version and didn't think anything could possibly be better, other than actually seeing it live. I was wrong. This is spectacular. The editing, the credits, the audio quality, the subtitles...it's already an incredible show, but this takes it to a whole new level. I might have to buy the digital download; not sure if I can wait for the rest of it!
