I read a book, "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" which covered the time period from 1500 to 1986. The way they measured a nation's wealth was a combination of GDP/GNP and total population, which he called the "productive capability" of that nation. That was a good indicator he used - it was not simply dividing GDP by population, otherwise countries like Monaco would be a "superpower", but it would measure a nations wealth and power more accurately. This video is all about GDP. However, China, while showing it was an "economic powerhouse" in the 1800s, was divided among far more people than, say, the UK, BUT the UK had more "productive capacity" and, with its decent sized population, was able to dominate more than China.
As far as I can see from this, he separated the Economies of colonies from the Colonizing Country. The colonies weren't included in the main country's economic strength.
И в 1 мировую войну, и во 2 мировую войну экономики всех стран рухнули, только США показали высокий рост. То же происходит и сейчас. И кому выгодны войны?

Quite interesting but it doesn't sound too accurate after losing its main colony, Brazil, in 1822, Portugal remains in the same position.
