That green "thing" in the engine compartment of the E-9 is actually a large concrete "weight" to weigh the loco down to maximize tractive effort of the locomotive. EMD would put large metal "tubs" filled with concrete inside engine compartment on these models and most of the time in the "nose" compartment of GP and SD freight units. If the locos didn't have the proper amount of weight, the wheels would spin instead of adhering to the steel rail and pulling.
Those flip-over seats were not intended to be used as tables. Train crews would flip them so they faced forward when the train reversed directions. They were a common design from the 50s and 60s. Budd, GE, and others used them widely. They were common in Silverliners from the 60s and early 70s. Crews didn't like having to flip them and SEPTA went so far as to drill them and put bolts through the flip mechanism. For some reason they bolted them at an 85% flipped angle, making the seat backs bolt upright and making them very, very, uncomfortable to sit in.
The green marc engine is a former Burlington northern E9. Ran metra trains from Chicago to aurora and sold to the Marc(baltimore commuter train). The double decker metra cars were built for the Chicago and Northwestern. Ran from Chicago west to geneva, nw to harvard and North to kenosha. The cnw was the qst rr to iae bi level commuter cars and push pull trains. The cab cars wirh thw windowa on the end ia where the engineer sat when the train backed into Northwestern station in Downtown (now Ogilvie transportation center). Most of those are not Metra cars...those are old passenger train cars. One car looks like it was from the old Illinois Central. That green engine you are exploring is an old Burlington Northern EMD E-9 locomotive. Those locos had two main engines, not one. Engines are removed. Fuel tanks are slung underneath the car body of the loco. From the sound of jet aircraft, I assume the location of the cars is near Midway airport. When did you record this video and where was the exact location? I would like to see them. Also, the double-decker Metra cars you explored were once owned by the Chicago & North Western. They used to be painted green and yellow but when Metra took over, they were repainted grey and brown.

They are over by O'hare, I have found a couple spots on google maps with old Metra Bi-levels, still haven't found this exact spot but its probably in the same area, in Elk Grove village, west side of the airport by all the warehouses.
I'm a daily metra commuter. We finally just decided to close on a contract for 200 cars with possibly another 300 i believe, i forgot exactly i wanna say 1.6 or 1.8 billion. First cars to come in about 42 months 3.5 years and than an additional 2.5 years of new cars continuing to come in. Quite nice actually. I'm born and raised in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and our rail system has to be one of the oldest and most ugly. I'm sure we got another 10-15s years before new cta buses and another 10-20 years before new L(subway&elevated) train cars. These new metra cars to come will do wonders in making our city look better.
that is a old Marc engine which its number was 91. it was brought to the Illinois railway museum for a short time but as years went by the train went to different states and it now rest here
The train cars with the small compartments are called cab cars they’re used for reversing train trips the engine mainly pushes the train for power to the cab cars
Btw, the cars with red and white on the back are cars that have a control cab. Some cars in the middle may have a control cab because they can couple any cars for the train, so they often mix different cars including old and new ones.
These single level cars where from where either the RTA ended or where Metra began. Since Metra didn't have their own cars, they used rock island ones instead.
Those first 2 cars you showed at the beginning when you asked were older Illinois Centrals from the 50’s. The Marc engine you went in right after was a E9 by the looks of it. Those double deckers that we’re in front of the Marc engine we’re old metra’s probably equipment from the 70’s - 80’s by the looks of it. That Marc was really obvious it was an ex bn. Many of those metra cars that look like those are still in service still today, tho they have being remodeled, and updated.
Early on in the video, when you tried to turn the one lever, you couldn’t because the master key was not turned on. The lever was used for throttle in forwards and reverse. The side with the lever would have been the conductors side, the other was for the second man.
Fun fact metra only started operating in 1970 and from 1970 to 1974 operated as the RTA so those old cars were operated by older railroads like bnsf Union Pacific Burlington northern etc
At 2:35, this engine was used for parts for another similar engine by the Wisconsin & Southern. And the fuel tank is below the middle of the engine underneath the engine.
The section starting at 5:33 is a control cab. When the train is inbound to Chicago, the locomotive pushes the cars and the engineer sits in that control car on the right side which would be the “front” of the train.

The chair flipping is for when you have a group of four passengers. You can flip the char over and get two seats facing each other. There are still metra trains with orange seats in the metra NW line
The flipping chairs are so people don't have to ride backwards. The conductors are supposed to flip or turn all the seats at each terminal. Facing seats on a full train will piss people off. There's also not really enough knee room for it. Metra is now switching to fixed seats so half the passengers will ride backwards all the time.
