Not one mexican i know, that watched the Pop Out Concert felt we were under represented. We were just happy to witness the greatness and historic moment of the concert. There have been a lot of shade thrown at the black community lately from Latinos mainly in the hiphop world so they’re starting to get frustrated and even though I’m Puerto Rican I understand.
First you had Fat Joe saying hiphop was created 50/50 Latino/Blacks
Then you had Busta Rhymes (Jamaican) saying black Americans have no culture. And it was Jamaicans/Latinos who created hiphop.
You had the Mexican rapper Swifty Blue saying Mexicans don’t wanna sign to blacks.
You had Mexican rapper Lefty Gunplay say he wouldn’t allow his daughter to date a black male.
    Then this situation with LAEykon.
They’re fed up! They feel they have been so accepting to other cultures only to be crapped on.
For the record black ppl did not create this issue Mexicans on social media have. I watch the different Chicano Podcasts and they’re constantly speaking on African Americans, they feel entitled and superior to them and African Americans are seeing this stuff being said towards them and their culture.
    It is what it is.

But it’s not all Mexicans this stuff is coming from Chicanos mainly out in Southern California. That’s the real culprits in this Black and Mexican issue on social media.

What bothered me the most was not that he didn’t know what Juneteenth was. Not even his dismissive tone that he used when discussing Juneteenth. It was the fact that he tried to go straight into Mexican oppression once he realized he misspoke. As if that justifies what he said. It also gave off the impression that he was equating his people’s oppression to what black Americans have been through in this country. He should have led with an apology. That’s it, that’s all. I’m all for positive energy and positive thinking, so much so, that if I misspoke on anyone else’s culture, holidays…. etc, I would humble myself, shut the hell up and learn. I definitely wouldn’t try to justify it.

I don't think LA Eyecon's comments took you far back as a people. They just revealed what we've been hearing and experiencing from many (not all) Mexicans here in L.A. for a long time. The revelation was just to a worldwide audience...that's the only difference. I wasn't surprised at all by their comments and his 'response/apology' was even worse than the initial comments. I could go even further peeling back the onion layers of what occured but I'll stop right here....

His lack of an apology speaks volumes. He has internal work to do. He needs to look at his beliefs and biases for sure. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

      @@kofoblue3172 1. Loved your comment. 💯
      2. IMO- growing up in the Berk/Oak (especially Berk) could easily give one the impression that Black and Brown are totally down with each other. I teach in Oakland and that’s not necessary true, but I see where (she) was coming from- that generally things in the Bay are more say “Kumbaya” between black and brown than in LA. I’m sure that’s performative to a certain degree.
In LA- it’s well documented that Latino gangs targeted black gangs specifically based around race. That’s an in-your-face example of tensions between these communities that’s just not apparent in Oakland/Berk (especially Berkeley) Not saying that Black gangs are innocent. And LA gang culture doesn’t represent all of LA.
But compared to LA- we just don’t have gang culture like that up here- at all. I can see how someone raised in the Bay never picked up on the anti-black attitudes of SOME Latinos . But to your point- if you know you know. The podcasters sentiment wasn’t surprising to me at all.

Been looking back at some of the comments and all it reveals to me is that a larger discussion needs to be had and a re-evaluation as well. From within the latin american society and to the black community. One discussion is what is a latino today and specifically which laatino identity is the overall one. When people talk about the black and brown alliance what we seem to be talking about is from an east coast perspective specifically Puerto rican and the black community in ny which if you look deeper into it was mostly black caribbeans hanging out with puerto ricans because they both of caribbean origin. It clearly does not reflect african americans and mexican americans who the latter is not only the oldest latino group in the states but was for a very long time the only group and the standard aka face of the latin american identity until it shifted to cubans in the 70s/80s and now peutro ricans today but in doing so it made to appear that everyone from latin descent are the same when its not. The issue with latinos experience in america is this, they became victim of an anglo american agenda of being othered. The first reason was because the spanish as more open about their racial mix in the colonies which threatened anglo americans idealogy of being pure hen in reality they just as mixed as mexicans are but the main reason is that mexicans represent a colonial threat. England and spain at the time were rival empires and the plaes they "founded" slash stole once they became free of their mother nations in the form of mexico and the USA carried on that rivarly with the usa taking over mexican and mexican adjacent territories. Your positive contribution to the americas is hardly acknowledged, when we talk about when america started its always 1617 the pilgrims and not the first european colony the spanish made in the late 1500s which also included the first official black presence on north america. The second thing is while hip hop is a black american culture thing, latinos did have influence on it just not in its infancy an not from puetro rico. The LA gangster fashion style that many believe to be a black thing is actually mexican and im talking about the plaid shirts and baggy trousers trademark. People assume its black because NWA popularised that style but its from the chicano side because when they started to form their gangs it was easier to hide contrabrand and the shirts was a reminder of what their fathers jobs were and that they didnt want to do those jobs because of how they saw their fathers treated but because of the discrimination several only saw the way out is via crime. So they wore their fathers shirts. I've seen videos from the late 70s to early mid eighties and the black community in la was not sporting that look compared to the mexicans and by the time it was adopted the mexican gang fashion had slightly changed to what it is now. So yeah there been overlaps that arent known or not focused on. When it comes to what kendrick did, it wasnt just a juneteenth thing there been as you know a history of getting the gangs in the black community together in peace. This just happened to be the latest attempt to bring them together. However the peace treaties as far as i know never included latino gangs because this was an in community thing. We dont know if anything like that ben happing within latin american communities in LA. At least anyone who is not from that area or latino knows if there were or been any. Which comes to my final point of national identity. Black americans are black because their ancestors identities were stripped away, the latin american identity is not homogenous because each group has their ancestor identity intact. So while black americans can separate between areas, cities and coasts it still easier to come together under a national banner of black when an outside threat endangers us as there is no different ancestral nation ties to prevent it, but because latin Americans do have that they dont necessarily come together like black people do for example you had the black panthers which was black american but latinos had the brown berets which was Chicano and the young lords which was Puerto rican. If im wrong but there doesnt seem to be an unifying latin american movement or banner where any latin american of whatever descent joins together. And i think that been undermining your voice in the states and why several things historically they achieved been ignored because of it where black americans has had one voice that is clear enough to hear. Thats what needs to be discussed, with black people its the nuances of the latin american community and society that has to be understood which latin americans actually unified with them and their place in the usa. There is three pillars acknowledged in us history, black white and indigenous. The forth pillar which is latino is ignored and reduced to migrant status when via the colonial spain and mexican side of the latin american family tree, has been here shaping what became the USA from the beginning along with the three othr pillars. Until that is understood nothing will change.

WOW! WELL STATED MY FRIEND! this was so rich and full of so much of OUR history collectively. It has become clear to me that many folks are ignorant when it comes to race, nationality, & cultural identity. The tools of colonialism and subjugation have affected all of our peoples for generations. It has affected the way we think and how we see each other. It's way more deep than what I've even touched on here in this video. I'm glad you mentioned the Panthers and the Brown Berets because that's the history and legacy I was taught from my community and the schools I attended growing up. I guess because I grew up in a place where social justice is commonplace and it's a literal part of our upbringing I feel really different about this issue. Thanks again for your amazing comment.

@angelsayslife you should look into integral theory, spiral dynamics, and cook-greuters' ego development theory model. I think those who have developmental models explain a lot, and now I'm convinced that a lot of issues stem from a developmental problem psychologically. Obviously, these are the same issues religions and spiritual traditions try to solve, but I think psychological science crystallizes the path a bit better (the path toward unitive consciousness). Pretty much, some of us are ahead of most psychologically, and the rest have to get to a point to where they can finally see that their map of reality is not THE map.
