- On Thursday the 9th / Friday the 10th of March 2017, a very rare occurrence happened on the Howth Branch. Retro liveried 071 class locomotive number 071 made it's very first to Howth in it's new retro CIE livery while it was doing the annual Sperry train. IE 088 was the other engine that was on the Howth Branch. What was interesting about this run was that we had the first 071 built on the line which is obviously 071, and then we had the last member of the 071 class to be built on the line to be built which was 088.
The first shot is at Baldoyle Road crossing where we see retro 071 passing with the 23.30 North Wall - Howth Sperry which was bang to time.
After that I hightailed it to Claremont Road crossing where we see IE 071 class loco number 088 passing light engine to collect the Sperry.
We then see 088 coupling up to the Sperry in Howth Station and then after that it's back to Claremont Road crossing where we see 088 passing with the early running Sperry back to North Wall, it left Howth 5 mins early at 00.20 instead of the booked time at 00.25.
I then make my way to Sutton Station where we see 071 passing through light engine as it makes it's way back to North Wall.

Great captures! Good shot! Thumbs Up
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it 👍
077 hauled a passenger train on the Howth branch in April 1998 on Irish Traction Group's "The Herman Munster" tour.
Mm actually many of IEs current locos are now being liveried in non orange and black (that old livery is now mainly on retro stock). Nice footage!!
Excellent video Stephen, the very time I'm not there the action starts without me! 🤣

Brilliant Shots ! Thats My Favourite Locomotive I Pity They Refurbished Them
Why is no Sirens on the level crossings
Sirens are turned off after 23:00 for the residents that live next to the crossing
lovley stephen
irish train films Cheers Ben!
How come there is no siren on the corssing
They switch the siren off after 23.00 every night.
@@irishrailtrains can they operate the crossing remotely
Do The Alarms not go off at night
No. After 10 they switch it off for the residents
Well I live beside Ballinorig Level Crossing in Tralee. And while I am trying to get to sleep. It bloody goes off at night
They're too orange.
Excuse my ignorance but what is a sperry train. Brilliant video. Kick in the head to whoever thought that gray livery suits the 071s. It's awful.
Fcutdlady thank you, yeah that new 071 livery is absolutely horrible. A sperry train does ultrasound scans on the rail head to check for and defects.
Irish Rail Trains ah thank you.
