The orchestra is "legit" because its the actual London Symphony Orchestra in the scene. My brother-in-law was playing in this scene, and the deal was they would all follow the leader, because Bradley Cooper was doing his routine AND directing the scene at the same time. They were all very impressed.

@in It's self-indulgent if you forget that he's acting and assume he's conducting. I think that if you keep in mind that he's a non-musician just trying to look like Bernstein, what he's doing makes a lot of sense.
@@koalabandit9166 Well just up-front I'll admit I really disliked the movie. I went in not knowing much about Bernstein and why his music is so well-regarded, how he created West Side Story, that kind of thing, and I came out of the film...still not knowing any of that. This flailing around midpoint of the film was the lowest point for me where I was rolling my eyes so hard at Cooper's "Pleeeeease give me an Oscar!!" sweaty display.

It’s HILARIOUS how Todd Field’s _Tár_ upstaged Bradley Cooper’s _Maestro_ so devastatingly, a year in advance. The latter film is such over-directed and boring Oscar bait by comparison.

Well, Bradley Cooper is known for being a bit of a wild actor himself, so I'm not at all surprised.
My mother sang under Bernstein's direction during a Broadway show and subsequent revival. Strong opinions in my early years which has carried forward.
I like his egmont overture and beethoven symphonies.(Possibly?)

So at 6:18 they comment on the 'legit-ness' of the orchestra. The orchestra performing here is the *actual* London Symphony Orchestra - the same orchestra as in the original Bernstein Ely Cathedral performance that this clip is based off. The concertmaster in the video is the current co-leader of the LSO, Carmine Lauri, and from recognising a lot of the faces in the video I'd wager all of the performers there are part of the LSO's standard concert lineup.

Others have commented on the concertmaster giving big cues, but the whole scene was done legitimately, live, for the filming. The concertmaster's not going to be cueing other sections of the orchestra, and it's too big a group, and too complex a piece, for the orchestra to play perfectly without a conductor. Bradley has said he wanted to be able to do the scene properly. I'm always hugely critical of music portrayals on screen, but I actually think he did ok with this. I've seen concertmasters with pro conductors make big gestures during regular concerts. But from what I've read I think he was 'conducting' them legitimately for the scene.
Which brings me to another sloppiness in the actual direction and preparation of the scene. They were content with having the real LSO to shoot with but failed to go the extra mile.
The real performance was televised, you can watch it. And guess what, it being the mid 70's the hairstyles were completely different and of course there were way less female players in the orchestra. The latter is a bit hard to accomplish if you want the real orchestra in the scene, the times have changed, but the former is just a job of the make-up department and caring enough to spend money on wigs for about 120 people.
Considering the accuracy with which they nailed the costuming and hairstyles, and especially Bernstein's much-photographed sartorial looks, throughout the bulk of the movie, that's a minor flaw I can live with.@@Quotenwagnerianer

In Belgium, there's an actor who's a big fan of Brahms 4 and it was his life's dream to conduct it, so they made a TV show following him trying to learn how to conduct (within 1 year) and showing what a conductor does, and it ended with him performing Brahms 4 with the Belgian National Orchestra. It's actually really nice, both for introducing people to classical music and showing what a conductor does.
I'll bet the show is inspirational as well as educational. Do you remember the name of it?

I've been singing in choirs for 20 years, and at least in an orchestra, you have a concertmaster to follow. For us, if the conductor is lamentable, we're screwed. 🥲
I have also sung in many choirs. The concerts where we were lucky enough to be singing with a symphony (Carmina Burana comes to mind), those of us who could see the concertmaster had help. Those who couldn’t … well, what you said! Same with concerts with an organist. Most of us could see them, and their head cues could be surprisingly informative & helpful!
@@eddavidson3051 True words, this happened to me, too 😅 But I was rather thinking of a capella pieces/songs. Also of course, in choir you have voice section leaders, but it's easier to follow one person (conductor or concertmaster) than us 4 or 6 section leaders paying attention on each other and trying to hold the choir together 😅😅
I remember when my church choir did a collaboration with another church choir from another town. For those who don't know, in church choirs the person playing the piano/organ is usually also the one conducting so we rely not so much on hand gestures and a whole lot more on eye contact, nods and body language. The choirs practiced separately at first - all went well for us. Then the other choir came to us for a practice with our leader conducting and the other playing - all went well for both choirs. Then we went to them for a practice with their leader conducting and our playing - and neither choir would come in when we were supposed to. Our leader was very expressive and very clear with her cues, while theirs kept the beat with a poker face and never looked up from his sheet music. I can read music, most of us could to some degree, but the fact that he gave us no indication at all made it seem like he didn't want us to come in even though the music said so and at least our choir had done so at every other practice. He was a great musician, but I wouldn't want him conducting me ever again 😅
@@BadGirlFan I had the exact opposite experience once. The conductor of the choir we were collabing with had so many extra movements and wild gestures that we had no idea when anything was supposed to happen.
When I was in college, our conductor taught a conducting class and we he would use the choir for his student's final assessment. I remember one student was conducting and she didn't queue us in properly. Afterward she made some comment like "well no one came in..." and the conductor basically ripped her a new one XD. He was like "yeah they didn't come in because YOU didn't queue them!" Fun times

This is actually a good video (Conducting 101!) for someone like me with zero experience in conducting. I have to say, Eddy is really good at explaining music theories in a concise but accurate way. Love this video so much!! It looks like a roasting video, but they are not just roasting, they are actually giving legit advice and trying to teach us something lol Thanks for the lesson, Prof Yang and Prof Chen!

@@DameMitHermelin I actually read some articles before seeing the film and he apparently played an orchestral instrument (bass perhaps? I can't remember but it was an orchestral instrument) when he was young, has always been fascinated by the role of a conductor, and worked with actual experts. I'm a musician and rarely enjoy any portrayals of music-making on screen, but I give him a pass for this.
Also yes, years ago I did at times play in an ensemble conducted by someone who hadn't a clue (business workshops, etc). For me personally, the person's character and ego would matter more. He worked on the Mahler for years and took that scene very seriously, so hopefully the orch were able to enjoy it at least somewhat. Hard to go totally without a conductor for a complex piece, too, no matter how well the orch knew it.
So, I am a mucisan (playing the violin and piano in a music school), but there was a time that I didn't want to practice, because I tought I wasn't good enough and everyone was expecting soo much from me, but I want to thank you for bringing me back my confidence and my ,,energy'' to practice 3-4 hours a day. Love you!❤❤❤❤

i really like the in depth analysis of the conducting here. it’s interesting to know more of what orchestral musicians see when watching these movies
it’s a harsher review than previous ones they did for other movies and dramas but it’s because the actor here has put in good efforts unlike those out right fake stuff
Considering Bradley cooper is not a conductor, a pro pianist, or actually Leonard Bernstein, - he did a pretty good job getting the feel, the vibe, of the man
There’s no such thing as perfect, and film preparation doesn’t give the years required to learn all the skills and knowledge that someone like Bernstein would have had. Music was what he’d dedicated his entire life to, especially conducting, and Mahler was his favorite composer. He would have known that piece in and out in his sleep. He does a lot to get Bernstein’s character and mannerisms, and I think it’s obvious he did a lot of training and preparation. I honestly really loved this movie because you can tell it comes from a place of admiration and respect for the music and the musicians
I got to perform with Bernstein a handful of times. Most notably was during our first performance during the Rite of Spring at the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival in 1987.
He had been ill a few days before and there was a possibility of his not being well enough to perform. He did... we were in the first section of the Rite where the strings hold a chord in the strings with a cut off to the next series of crashes, bangs and booms or rhythm.
He didn't cut off the strings and jumped into the air..... and at the same time he caught himself not in time, however. The concertmaster/mistress now in the Baltimore Symphony held the orchestra's strings together and we waited what seemed like an eternity (split seconds) to collect himself.
It was exciting to say the least and recovered as scary as it was.
As for the movie, it's about the man and his relationship of being bisexual in an age that wasn't very tolerant. His wife accepted him almost unconditionally. He would have burnt out sooner without her. She is the unsung heroine behind the maestro. And he wasn't the same after her passing.
No way to fill the void she left.

Yannick is a wonderful conductor. I was singing with Montréal Symphony when he started with Orchestre Métropolitain, and shortly, he programmed pieces that required a chorus, so us OSM singers moonlighted at OM. The first thing I noticed about him was not his youth, nor his incredible musicality, though those would have been prominent. It was his respect, which struck all of us. A respectful conductor. No wonder everyone who has ever had the chance to work with him still raves about the experience! Humble, too, and respectful. Those qualities are few and far between in the music world. Yannick? Pure joy.
His work with Mr Cooper is phenomenal. To take a musically inclined ACTOR and bring him up as a believeable Bernstein is something else. Oh, there may be a beat out of place here and there, even the most reknowned have f*ckups that are sometimes memorable, if not legendary, where the Konzertmeister must keep their cool so that they can be a reference for everyone on stage, including the barytones who are almost out of sight, lost near the wings of the concert hall.
As a Dramatic Soprano, I wonder who placed the Mezzo so far in the front. A couple of steps back and the regular glimpses the conductor and soloist exchange would have been more stressed upon, and less disrupting than having the conductor turn so much. Like when Tatiana Troyanos got annoyed with Dutoit for God knows what reason (he did cause more than one to be annoyed) and in rehearsal, sang the Habanera with one foot raised on her chair, her hips then being totally free to ACT Carmen. Lightning in their eyes I tell ya!

It for sure was Cooper's idea, because of the way he shot this, they singers would have distracted from him if they had been positioned were they really stood in the original performance.
Just look it up on RUclips, they stood right next to Bernstein , half a step before him, so that a simple glance to the side was sufficient for contact.
Yannick may be a musician's conductor, but that has translated into some abysmally forgettable recordings in his career. There are live concerts where I am genuinely taken aback by his execution and interpretation, yet other times it can seem pedestrian, and at his worst, his recordings are clinical and simply unmemorable. Perhaps a more tyrannical approach would yield results on a higher level when recording. Just my ears' two cents as a lifelong listener of countless conductors past and present. Not to invalidate your own personal experience as a respected musician!

Bradley Cooper isn’t a conductor, I get it, I don’t expect the conducting to be perfect. What I don’t get is why they didn’t cut away from the obviously inaccurate conducting to focus on the actual orchestra or soloists or members of the choir, people who actually know what they’re doing! I just sang Mahler 2 with my choir and I definitely wouldn’t have been able to follow his “beat” looooool

I can't comment about your critique. I have been to a concert in Vienna where Bernstein was guest conductor when I was a student in 1969/70. I have not watched the movie but what I can say is that Bernstein was a performer with a baton in his hand. No amount of practice could help Bradley Cooper imitate that wild card. And yes, if you can't blame Blood Raven (ASOIAF, GoT) look to the concert master for help!😁

The section where you guys played to his conducting cracked me up-I’m a soprano, and way back in high school our normal choir concerts and competitions would be conducted by our own teachers, whose idiosyncrasies we were very used to-and then every year there would be a citywide Christmas concert in which every high school in the city would form one megachoir, and each school’s choir teacher would direct a certain number of songs, and some of them were easy to follow and clear, and some of them were fine if a bit dry or unemotional as far as musical expressiveness went, and some of them…four years of that in, in our senior year, if you weren’t their students you were still going “What does that mean??? Why are you accenting just the upbeats with your hands; this song isn’t syncopated; there’s no -sound- there! What is happening??? Was that supposed to be a cutoff signal? It looked like he said ‘come in now,’ but we’re already singing?” It is strangely nostalgic with a few decades of distance and you guys frantically playing 1-1-1-1

@@dragonbowlsupper Proper musicians and conductors spend their entire lives trying to become prodigies like Berenstein and won't get there even with talent and technique. Bradley probably wasn't studying to be a conductor 24/7 in those 6 years, and clearly has some musical skills but not the kinds you'd need to conduct an entire orchestra and choir and have all the cues and parts running simultaneously in your head. It's too big an ask for an adult learner of any kind, I'd say.

I hope you review Tar. Cate Blanchett is amazing as a conductor! All the music is digenic and it was the real Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra playing Malher's fifth. Nina Hoss plays the violin and she did a pretty good job!

Bit surprised about Cooper's conducting (without actually having seen the movie). I heard in an interview that he'd studied Bernstein's conducting excessively, especially the Mahler bit!
He's an actor. He was studying Bernstein's general movement and expressions, which he nailed I think.
His actual "conducting" was kinda bad, sure, but it's still pretty good for someone with probably zero prior experience and is convincing enough for the general public.
I think he nailed the passion, but not the technique, which is not surprising! For the purposes of this movie, he really inhabited Bernstein's emotional, theatrical style and mannerisms.
