Regardless of what you think of Pete Waterman. This man is a genius when it comes to creating hit singles. Absolute legend 👍
Dominant in the early and late 80s.
Massive ....recall Rick Astley and Kylie Minouge. This is the chap that ruled the roost in PWL.
He didn't actually create them, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, Pete Hammond, Phil Harding, Ian Curnow, Dave Ford etc MADE the music!!!!
What a refreshing change to have someone who's not only passionate what he does , but knows what he's talking about!! It doesn't matter if you like are dislike him , he's knows what he's talking about. So down to earth genuine person. Iv alot of respect for the man. He played such a big part of my youth and still today I enjoy his music and watching him with his other passion " trains".
I could listen to Pete Waterman talk all day :-) Love it
Always liked Pete, extremely credible and keeps it real. I know a few people dont like him but I imagine thats because he doesn't pull his punches, they'll appreciate that as they get older. As an amateur producer/former dj and record collector I can listen to him talk all day, so many cool stories
Pete makes some valid points. Streaming as part of the charts is a joke. It’s the equivalent of someone buying a CD or downloading an album and then every time it gets played it gets counted towards the charts. No wonder the vinyl chart is so different to the main chart which is now stagnant and distortedly overrun by Ed Sheehan.
PW and his team have a well deserved place in 80s pop music history - no matter how contrived the production formula became, too soon unfortunately. Still we have to thank him for the mega hits and showcasing Rick Astley's talent, along with the dancefloor gems by Dead Or Alive; Hazell Dean & Mel & Kim etc etc ... Check out interviews with Trevor Horn here as well - a supreme talent.
Legend! I appreciate his candor.
Brilliant interview thanks George and Pete for sharing!
This guy epitomises someone who rose to fame but kept it real. As a bit of a geeky tech nerd (who grew up in the 80s), everything he says in this interview makes perfect sense. This interview should be shown to ALL GCSE music students.
Honestly I'd love to just chill out and have a beer n a chat with Pete.
He is a natural, we spent over an hour in his kitchen chatting before recording this.
@@RecordProduction having watched his recent interview on his model railway enthusiasm, I like the guy even more!
The 3 guys from PWL are legends, the whole team in fact when you think about it, and yeah, pretty much spot on what Pete said, nothing's happened in music since Oasis in the UK, time for a change I'd say
I really like this!
Great stuff💯
Great talk
pete waterman is the man !
dean` Brady
A wonderfully refreshing interview. One thing above all to take from this is there is very limited revenue from modern songs as there are no long term publishing returns. As 90% of chart releases are sh*t and no one would want to cover them.
Banarama's book says his role was mainly ideas and an encyclopaedic knowledge of music. Nothing else mentioned.
Pete waterman had nothing to do with the songwriting. Jeez I know way more abut songwriting than he ever did. He was great at creating the buzz and hysteria around the artist. If you asked Pete what a 7#9th chord was he wouldn't have a clue...lol
4:56 Ahaha so funny :-) Good old Pete!
i love this
On the spot argument, Peter Waterman. You have to go with confidence(give public confidence), what Pet shop Boys, psb, is doing, has done. You May make a filming on undertow, into thin air, on Iceland/Other Places, up against it........, face like that, you may not, is about what Vision you have. Reading a Book is absolutely invigorating. Lars Larson alingsås sweden
Does he still have the studios in Manchester?
Pete the Greatest! Incredible record maker!!
Assuming you're the Rick Nowels I think you are, you are pretty good at your job yourself! It would be lovely to re-do our interview :)
Hilarious and great!
Legendary bloke
Legend
He's talking to someone he thinks is a technical guy, so all of a sudden he's "extremely technical" himself haha
What's the name of the microphone did he say he loved?
Calrec (that's the company that produces them, not a specific model).
awesome!
On their releases, the liner notes would usually say that they used the Calrec Soundfield.
it is the Calrec Soundfield. A tetrahedral capsule array. It can be use for Ambisonic surround recording.
To stuff from Pete.
SAW were good in the 80's you can't fault them . However when you hear some of the artistes sing LIVE it really is so out of tune ....completely off key .That shows you how clever the boys were technically because there was NO AUTO-TUNE back then .The nearest producer today who comes close to SAW style updated is Matt Pop from The Netherlands .Amazing productions & often new self-penned classics .
You never know what the circumstances were on those stages. Improper monitoring happens a lot!
He is a great A&R, but didnt write a single note nor a single word, but without him we wouldnt have known about all of SAW productions
1:06 'I've always been technical' bwahaha - Pete Waterman's about as technical as a bucket and spade
umm how does taping songs off radio compare to people ripping songs from internet sources? completely different times...
Agreed Ethereal. The analogy or comparison with modern-streaming and downloading to taping off the radio or watching 'Top Of The Pops' given by Waterman is false. What has not changed is that it is still national radio and TV and major record record backing that makes an artist or band successful.
Producers from the 70s, 90s and beyond "Neve's are fantastic"
Producers from the 80s "We f**king hate Neves" (see Trevor Horn's interview as well)
Pete is spot on, there is so much rubbish on the radio nowadays and that's why they aren't selling so cut the excuses. Pop music has sounded stagnant for over 25 years now, same tired, horrible sound and getting worse.
That's what old people in the 80s said about the music then....
The bar of production has raised considerably since the 80s. The producers now are far more talented
Hard to follow. I enjoyed Mike Stock's interviews a lot more.
What he doesn't understand is that people don't buy albums because why buy an album that is free on Spotify?
:D
He didn't actually create them, Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, Pete Hammond, Phil Harding, Ian Curnow, Dave Ford etc MADE the music!!!!
im the best bullshiter. yeh right!
If its easy then why has none done what Saw did ? More success than Beatles . Simon cowell and every record co. passed on Kylie.fools.
Nobody was more successful than the Beatles! Nobody has written songs anywhere near as good as the Beatles. I know''' I have taught music and guitar for 20 yrs! The Beatles are unsurpassed and probably always will be.
@Mickeyislowd the originals...
pioneered the pop sound, always imitated, never beaten. 👍
Considering the Beatles' song catalog wound up owned by a hedge fund, what is "beaten"?
