    The moral of not signing bad contracts is hilarious in hindsight - recently it was revealed that Liefeld lost all rights to Youngblood and other Extreme characters because he signed a scummy contract.

    That "eat your heart out George Perez" thing always bugged me. Mainly because when George Perez does it the characters are clearly defined and easily identifiable. All that panel had was characters that barely anyone knows all in the same shade of blue. For all I know most of them might not even be characters just generic 90's superheroes made up to fill the panel.

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  7 лет назад +63

      Since I wasn't sure if it was in good fun, I decided not to try to break that down, but yeah, if it was a serious remark... hell no. XD

  • @trooper9249
    @trooper9249 7 лет назад +113

    That better be just some good natured ribbing of George Perez. 'Cause if it's not, if it's meant to be a legitimate slam against Perez, I just got one thing to say:
    George Perez once drew a splash panel containing everyone who had ever been a member of the Justice League *and* The Avengers. Screw you, early nineties Image Comics

    • @fhb3
      @fhb3 7 лет назад +32

      And he drew that panel blindfolded. In his sleep. And with a 104° fever. Because he's George Perez.

    6:44 Wow. They almost look... human. Look at them just hanging out as friends and doing an activity that humans enjoy. It's pretty endearing.
    9:36 And there they are again wearing normal clothes and relaxing in a house. I know it's really not a big deal, but when the writing is as dull as Youngblood's, I cling to any personality I can see of these characters.

      That's the early Image's problem. They are talented artists (exept Liefeld) but horrible writers. They tried to create a shared universe like DC and Marvel but they are not good storytellers. That's why they needed good storytellers then their whole idea started to collapse. Because a storyteller need new characters for story. If you say "no, you don't have any royalty, I just hired you for tell a story about my creation" that makes you no better than others who you accused before for being sell out. Actually even worse than others, makes you biggest hypocrite. I lost my all respect for Mcfarlane after Gaiman case. To be honest his Spawn is not remarkeble in first place.
      Nowadays Image works better because stories are selfcontained. A creator team starts and ends story thats it. As far as I know no shared universe or spin off.

    By the way given how "well" Badrock took his TV show, don't you think someone should be calling up the studio executives, focus groups, and George Spieloppla and telling them to go into hiding because the 10 foot 2,000 pound super strong guy who is on a team of psychopaths is furious at them for turning his show into a discount Sesame Street and is likely already on his way to LA to have a very long talk with them.

    the point of referencing MARVEL/DC characters, apparently when the guys who left MARVEL to start Image did so, their egos got so inflated that they thought copyright law no longer applied to them, also Gotham is another name for New York

    I can see the switch of authors working honnestly. well done, it could help them to get out of their confort zone(keeping an edge is often a good idea in creative endeavors) and force them to get a wider feel of the Image catalogue/universe.

    I don't think those are veins, the neck in the front is a series of overlapping muscles that connect to the clavicle and wrap around the larynx, sometimes you can see some of the individual muscles when someone strains or flexes super hard. Liefeld did not in fact get any of the anatomy correct but I think that's what he was going for on the cover.

    Constructive criticism on the soft box lighting experimentation. It's a bit dark, but I think the main antagonist is the cold hue. It's not very "warm", which pales the skin and dampens colors.

    The reporter without pants is a reference to a sort of urban legend where news anchors don't wear pants, because they are sitting behind a desk and you can't see their legs. Of course, the urban legend doesn't apply to REPORTERS IN THE FIELD, who have to move around and are often shown in wider shots and not behind desks. So even though that was referencing something, the joke missed...which is not a surprise for Youngblood.

Of course, being extremely smart, I have a hard time interacting with other people who can't match me. It's not that I feel like they're beneath me, but any way I say it, it would sound like that. I was a pretty no-nonsense seventeen year old.

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  7 лет назад +10

      Probably an even larger grasp of the industry, what goes into it, knowledge of more publishers (I rely on research to gleam anything of value for them, which isn't often), and less focus on the Big Two (which is more my wheelhouse).

    • @mhelvens
      @mhelvens 7 лет назад +11

      +Linkara-AtopTheFourthWall: Fair enough. But don't sell yourself short. I haven't watched all your stuff, but I've seen you review plenty of 'third party' comic books. I've also seen you discuss writing, art-styles, coloring, etc., as well as the history behind the creation of certain series and characters (like in Secret Origins Month).

      If you're NOT an expert, you'll do till one comes along. :p You have a respectable amount of knowledge about the stuff the average reader/viewer cares about. Most of the behind-the-scenes stuff leans a little more into the realm of the hardcore nerd.
      Not that there's anything wrong with being a hardcore nerd, but you can express that in other ways. :p

    The shot of Spider Man's leg could be a reference to the crossover between Backlash and Spider Man. That's the only reason I think of it being there. I guess it's treated like the Batman/ Spawn crossover in that it's canon to image but not Marvel

    BTW, as much as Lewis rags on gradient backgrounds, it could be worse. I have no opinion on RWBY itself, but the manga is running in the US Shonen Jump and only about 4 or 5 panels in the average-20-page chapter actually have backgrounds. The rest of time the background is just pure, blank, white. The actual art is OK, but the complete lack of any attempt at backgrounds makes the comic boring as hell.
    Seriously, if somebody gets the top Patreon spot, somebody request Chapter 1 of the RWBY manga.

    • @choninja21

      Duke Spubber As a fan of the show, I'd say ignore the manga. It's pretty garbage and is wildly inconsistent with the characterization in the show and how the world works.

    • @henryt3301
      @henryt3301 7 лет назад +5

      Meh, manga tends to avoid backgrounds sometimes. Of course, not disagreeing with you.

    • @dukespubber741
      @dukespubber741 7 лет назад +2

      Henry T Most manga, if there are no backgrounds, usually cover it up with wall of text word balloons. If not, there's usually at least a gradient or something. Even then, it's usually only on certain panels. Action shots usually have some kind of background, even if it's a generic ground or wall.
      Problem is, with the RWBY manga, there's nothing like that. You know those character stock portraits on Wikipedia or fan made Wikis? Draw a comic panel border around that and you have 90% of RWBY's manga panels. It literally seems like their entire world is one huge white void.
