In today's video we'll be upgrading the SSD in a late 2013 15" Retina MacBook Pro with a standard NVMe SSD. This works on a lot of MacBooks, such as MacBook Pros late 2013-mid 2015, MacBook Airs mid 2013- 2017, iMacs (with fusion drive or SSD) late 2013- 2017 (probably 2019 as well), Mac Pro 2013, Mac mini 2014.
Here are a few links to some good SSDs and the adapter used in the video:

970 Pro 512gb: amzn.to/2QhNH1N
970 Evo Plus 1tb: amzn.to/2HvNuVZ
Crucial P1 500gb: amzn.to/2YHIjrA

Several people have been asking so i figured I'd add a pinned comment: 2012 and early 2013 MacBook Pros can be upgraded, but not with NVMe SSDs. They use an mSATA interface with different pin map, so you'd need a different adapter and an mSATA SSD. The hardware upgrade would be the same, and the software process should be largely the same as well.

Luke Miani I upgraded my mid 2014 15 inch MacBook Pro to a 2tb nvme ssd I’m noticing my battery being drained If I’m to close the computer after I’m finished with it at night plug out of the wall and I go back to it in the morning battery’s dead never happened before
Thanks for this Luke! - From a mid 2012 MacBook Retina owner 😬
Can this adapter be used in the 2015 Macbook Pro 12,1?
Any chance to link the products my dude? or possibly even make a video? :D
for an early 2013 retina that is
I do this to macs a lot and there are a couple of very important things that luke skipped.
1. when he formatted the drive, you need to make sure the partition map is GUID, to do this before formatting, go to view along the top then "show all devices". then format the drive and it will allow you to choose the partition map. Otherwise it wont work.
2. I have only had luck with samsung drives, many cheap SSDs are not even detected by mac OS or linux when installed.
3. Once you install the OS, you need to do some tweaks in the terminal and settings to fix sleep and hibernation issues you will have. first, go to settings then energy saver and uncheck "put hard drives to sleep when possible". then go to terminal and put in the command sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 standby 0 autopoweroff 0 out in password then it should say somthing like ":idle sleep timings for battery power may not behave as expected"
when all this is done, you will still have issues with 5G wifi networks dropping out on the laptop, since both the wifi chip and ssd now use the same PCI lane. 2.5GHz networks work fine, but if you have 5G, you will lose internet randomly.
Does this apply to any upgrade or selected ones - what about a mid 2014 15 retina pro?
Had you experienced any battery consumption increase with NVMe SSDs instead of the Apple ones?
@@geeebeee110 this applied to every one you upgrade (I think, I have not tried it on all systems)
@@israelzinho surprisingly no, even with hibernation disabled, battery life is unchanged.
@Bobby Brady I have only experienced a wifi problem when I upgraded my router and network to 5G. most wifi works fine, and even 5G works most of the time.
I never cease to be amazed by how both informative and practical your videos are. One of the only channels I've seen so far that gives contextual cost-effective advice for us broke folk. Thank you Luke.
I just wanted to say that I like the style and format of your videos. I know you don't have a ton of subscribers but keep plugging away and you will get there.
Great video. Running a late 2013 MBP w/Retina and replaced the 512Gb drive with a 1 Tb. More than doubled my read/write speeds.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Luke for a great video. Now if there was only a way to upgrade the RAM.
Damn a video with a TRUE and ACCURATE comparaison, thank you Luke.
You just saved me some serious cash with this video. All the other videos online just push you to buy OWC stuff like it's the only way possible to upgrade a late 2013 macbook pro 15". All these listed components are available for reasonable cheap as well, here in Brazil. Thanks a lot and keep up with this amazing content
Love the lighting! Great quality on your video, thank you for doing this! =D
Thank you very much for this Tip Luke. Did the upgrade with the Crucial P1 1TB and it works great!!
was it noticeably faster and whatnot, I'm looking to up ssd 240g never enough
Thank you for your hint. I was looking for a a SSD upgrade. That's the perfect solution. Regards from switzerland!
Your effects are great in this video 👏
Thank you for making this!
Fyi, OS X Mojave installation will convert the journaled format to apfs regardless . I recommend right off the bat formatting apfs while installing Mojave . It’s the most reliable way to make sure osx gets installed without any issues .
Tried this but a firmware was missing
Hi, Nate did you do the swap ????!!!! I watched other video ..dude mentions - non-Apple SSD drain more battery and it reboots ? Do you have that expiriance as well ?? I want to do what you did on A1398 mid2015 15" ..... thank you for your best answer ......Aloha

great viideo, I was about to upgrade same ssd on my macbook pro.....and now I am going to be even happier with this upgrade, thank you for this video.
Awesome video. Very helpful. Will be trying it out on my late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro.
It's a shame the 2016 and newer MacBook pros can't be upgraded 😕 Great video as usual Luke 👌
I’m still holding out hope that next generation will use upgradable SSDs but somehow I doubt it
Don't buy MacBooks newer than 2015. They are soldered crap.
Already in 2012 Macbook Air RAM is soldered. The fastest NVME in the world can't compensate for 4GB of RAM.
Lee C what do you recommend I do with my mid 2011 MacBook Air?
@@lancer717 A simple and cheap way to increase storage is to use an SD card. I worked on one with a completely full 128GB SSD and for only $30 I added a 128GB SD card and moved all the music and pictures to it. Apple makes their stuff difficult to upgrade on purpose so people will just buy a new one.
Thank you so much. This was a lifesaver doing this myself.
Thank you thank you thank your for doing these types of videos!!!!
Awesome Build. Please also tell us where do you buy these used laptops??
Next time I would unplug the battery first since that could cause issues if your unlucky
Another super video! I love ❤️ these repurposing and upgrading videos. I like to use my old electronics as long as possible.👍🎥💻👨💻📱✅
looking forward to do this!!
This was truly a great money saver! I just upgraded my Macbook Pro (Late 2013) and the process worked flawlessly. I used the exactly same inland Premium SSD 512GB and adapter. Once I formatted the drive, restoring my stuff through Time Machine worked out great! Thanks for the video! Excellent process and easy to follow!
I was thinking he had grabbed the Inland brand.... Did you run time machine pulling from your old drive or a backup previously made?? Have you had any hibernation issues?? I'm thinking about grabbing a new drive next time I'm near a Microcenter for my 2015 15" rMBP
How has the Inland NVME ssd been working for you?
I was always a little suspicious about these adapters. Good to know that they actually work lol
For real man! Wanted to buy one a few months ago but didnt because i didnt trust it🤣
Yeah, the adapters seem to work well, there are still issues with (at least some) NVMe drive on macbooks though, lock ups, kernal panics on wake up and high battery drain. Hopefully they'll be resolved soon.
@Bobby Brady so it was not possible that it was a shitty product? What are you saying bro...
get the sintech adapters they are more reliable
@@keijiazum9282 That's what I have. Things have been much better since I changed my hibernate settings to 25

I was able to restore from Time Machine backup with latest OS update.
I was little nervous opening MacBook for first time but all is well!
Did you encountered sleep issues with this adapter installed?
Oh Luke, your Apple upgradeability grace came to me thanks to your awesome recommendation. I was on vacation in US trying to decide to buy a new Macbook Pro or not. Now I'm back to Argentina with a 1TB of Crucial P1 working fantastic in my 2015 15' mbp. You Rock!
really helpful video!
Great info, thanks!
Thanks so much for this. Today I fitted a Samsung V-Nand SSD 970 Evo Plus to my MacBook Pro 13" i7 Late 2013. I've now got a 1TB SSD rather than the 256GB SSD I had before. It's saved me a fortune as this MBP still runs all the music apps I use with ease, it was just that I was running out of storage. As a new MBP is out of the question then this was the perfect solution. The drive cost me just over £150 on Amazon UK on Black Friday, and the adaptor was around £5. A heck of a lot cheaper than a OWC drive. The install was easy. Thanks again.
I'm about to buy a Samsung 960 EVO, read there're lots of issues with the 970EVO Plus. Have you encountered any so far?
Hi Roy, I'm contemplating on which to get, EVO Plus or Pro, Samsung 1TB for my upgrading project on my MBP 2015 15"? Love to hear your input ;)
This is a very informative video. I saw in a similar upgrade video commenting that some of these adapters (and some NVME drives) do not properly support sleep/hibernate. In fact, the QNINE you link to in your video states: Don't support Samsung PM981, Samsung 950 Pro, Samsung 970 Evo Plus. You are kindly reminded that macOS failed on resume from hibernating with some NVME SSDs of some brands. Have to turn off laptop all the time instead of close the lid and go.
It would be great to know from you (or others) the safe combinations of adapters and drives to avoid this headache. Because a laptop that you can't close the lid on to make it sleep...kinda sucks.
samsung released a new firmware for the 970 Evo Plus, i bought the ssd with the new firmware, 970 Evo plus is working 100 percent and blazing fast

will this work on an early 2015 pro 13?
Great video! I did something similar and installed a WD Black 500GB drive on my 2015 MBP. It worked great for the first month, although battery life was considerably worse, especially while sleeping where the drain was up to 30% overnight! Since then I've started to have regular kernal panic issues when waking and the occasional mouse lock up as well. I'm struggling to find any solutions and I'm thinking of going back to the original 128GB drive.
I had my battery replaced at apple due to the recall. Then installed the Samsung 970 evo I have had similar issues with locking up. I wasn't sure if it was what they did to replace battery or the new ssd.
@@sdcantr These problems you are reporting are known on the internet and apparently you need to use the OEM hardware or you will experience severe battery drain issues.

7:56, was when Miani realised how bad Apple rips off people's wallet, at times(very rarely), not offering value for money. Apple's storage is insanely priced, that's for sure. Great video.
Always have been. I've been in Macs since the 90s--it's a miracle they're not any more overpriced than this. You want a premium machine, you pay premium prices. I guess Apple just assumes we're all made of money out here! XD
Do sleep work after you install the SSD? Or did you have to disable it using a terminal command?
Bobby Brady I'm not sure exactly what the issue is but many people have done this kind of upgrades before and a lot of them have sleep issues or kernel panics when waking from sleep. It seems to vary from adaptors to adaptors
Sleep won’t work on a 2013-14 MacBooks you have to flash the firmware with a modified rom and flashing device ($50) with Jtag adapter from Korea.
Bobby Brady you can use a terminal command to disable deep sleep and avoid the sleep problem. That is what we were using. A group of 4 co worker chipped in to buy the flasher and Jtag adapter to see if the modified ROM would allow to do Boot camp Windows 10 (it won't). I upgraded the iMac at home with an external Thunderbolt SSD 1tb and use the internal as Time machine.
Excellent - Very interesting - Many thanks !
Been thinking about picking up a Retina MacBook Pro at some point, nice to see that you can throw in an off-the-shelf NVMe drive. Awesome video as always! :)

Hi Luke, I am a fan of you from Colombia, congrats excellent Chanel, question, nowadays its worth to upgrade SSD for MacBook Pro 2017, I have noticed new ssd similar or equal to the original, it is worth? Thanks Luke
Thank you for this Tutorial.
I have a MacBook Pro 13“ Retina 2015. Can the RAM and the GPU be replaced or are they soldered? If there is a possibility, a tutorial would be great. LG
If anyone sees this can answer my two questions I'd appreciate it.
I use a 2019 16in MacBook pro (I think it's 16, I bought the biggest MacBook in Q1 2020) with the top cpu, mid gpu and 500gb ssd. I need atleast 1tb of storage now to store 1 days worth of 4k raw footage shot at 120fps. So I am considering upgrading my internal storage to a 2tb nvme ssd. My other option is to buy a 2tb USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 or tb3 ssd and record directly to that from my camera and then I wouldn't need to buy a new SD card adapter and it would be quicker. This would cost me about $300 for the nvme ssd, $300 for the 2x2 (20gbps) that has a finger print lock which is nice if I lost 6 hrs of footage no1 could steal it, or $600 for a chonking tb3 ssd with no lock. Also consider I don't have my camera yet, nor a SD card reader nor any SD cards, so those need to be factored in if I upgrade the nvme in the Mac, instead of editing in final cut directly from a portable drive my camera recorded the raw directly to. I may consider also recording to the SD card if it supports it So I have a backup if the drive fails.
Which of the 3 do you recommend and why?
Bonus question for you Mac nerds, I'm new to Mac so help me out, I've been loving it. What do I do to ensure all of my settings and files transfer from the previous Mac to the new one? I was thinking if I could use a windows machine, I have one with 2 nvme drives open. Would I be able to plug em both in, with the new one pre formated in the MacBook and do a simple transfer? Or is it more complex and will require lots of effort/pay a local service $150 type deal?
I hate to rain on your parade, but your 2019 Macbook has a soldered SSD, i.e. it cannot be upgraded. Either delete older, unnecessary files, or introduce an external SSD to your setup.
Hey,
Would be please confirm if it is possible to upgrade SSD on MacBook Air 2020, the same way you did in this video?

Do you have any issues with hibernation when you close the lid? I read online that when upgrading these MacBooks to an NVMe drive hibernation doesn’t work anymore because of a software bug that doesn’t allow it to come out of hibernation when you open the lid again..
How is your computer doing coming back from hibernation after being asleep for awhile? I had to change some pmset stuff up.
Hi Luke. Thanks for this video.
Could you explain -- does the OS need to be installed separately from a time machine backup to a new SSD? @4:35 you kind of skimmed over this as it might have not applied directly to this video, but I'm unsure how to go about this correctly.
I have a 2014 MacBook pro running Mojave. I want to upgrade the SSD without changing the OS. Do I need to install the OS separately to the new SSD before running Time Machine? Or, will Time Machine automatically restore my OS for me during the backup to the new drive?
If I need to restore the OS beforehand how would I go about this? I don't want to upgrade my OS. I would like to keep Mojave. I appreciate any help you can offer. I've had a hard time trying to find a good article on this subject.
Thank you Luke, it is time for me to upgrade to a MacBook Pro mid 2015 15 inch from a MacBook mid 2012 13 inch
I heard that third-party SSD cause the Mac not to sleep correctly. Is OWC’s version better since it doest’t need the adapter? Thanks for the great content.
I recently came across this video. I was about to get rid of my 15" MacBook Pro Retina Display Laptop, but I went ahead and started to upgrade. But I came across an issue. The Adapter you suggested is either no longer available or out of stock. I've tried two different adapters, but none work with SSD cards. It won't show up once I install and run the Disk Utility. Is there another option you can suggest? I hope you can help me. I really like this machine, the new ones are so flimsy. Lol. Thank you in advance.
So the original SSD installed was/is a Mac brand? It's proprietary? Does it take a special tester to determine if it's working properly? Thanks
I just purchased 2015 15" Macbook Pro. I just attempted the SSD upgrade you recommend, using a standard 22mm x 80mm NVMe drive by Solidigm. When I plug it into an adapter, it's too long and I can't screw it back in place. I tried filing down the end of the adapter, but all that did was shorten the contacts so they no longer reach all the way inside the socket on the motherboard and the computer won't boot up at all. What do you recommend?
Interesting Info to me.
Can you tell something about the temperature? Is the heat a problem?
Thank you for a lot of Mind opening Apple Videos. You push me to become a Pro...
I notice that in the description on AMazon that the QNINE M.2 NVME SSD to 12+16 Pin Adapter you recommended is not compatible withe the 970 EVO Plus 1TB drive you also recommended. Is this true? I ordered both based on your links and am only seeing there might be a problem now. Thoughts?
Luke....this video made my day however, I have one question. Mid 2015 MBP I have installed OWC's first gen Aura SSD NVME and it recognizes it as an external HD. With this adapter would it do the same ? Did it show up as a reg internal HD when you did your testing ?
Hi Luke, do you have another adapter that you recommend? The one in the description is unavailable. Loving the videos. Thanks in advance.
I enjoyed your video. I don't yet have an Apple laptop, but want to jump in at a bargain price. Where do you buy a good used Macbook and are there any particular things to avoid?
this is a very good idea. possibly the last missing link preventing artists from just buying old macs to create art.
Great video Luke...one quick question. is it possible add a second HHD (data or name) as a boot drive and use NVME as a second drive?
Great instruction...any chance I could refresh an early 2011 MacBook Pro with a NVME?
Great video Luke! Have you ever repaired or upgraded an IPad?
Hey @lukemiani Wondering if you know if there's a similar adapter for NVMe SSD to 7+17 pin sockets? I accidentally bought a very expensive OWC external case for my old MacBook Air I was replacing via your method above but didn't realist there were like 3 or 4 different Apple Proprietary SSD standards & Pins. Was hoping to put my old 12 + 16 pin SSD back into the MBA (as the upgrade wouldn't sleep properly & Mojave was waaaay slower) and put the newly purchased SSD into the OWC case. Thanks!

I happen to hear from a mac service technician that using a nvme via adapter may sound good now but in future it would cause issues to macbook logic board. After hearing that I am worried to upgrade to NvMe but also not willing to a stock apple ssd which is very very costly.
Model that i have MBP Late 2013 15” 2.0 Ghz i7.
Any suggestions or thoughts please
Excellent and easy-to-follow instructions. I have two questions, please? I have just bought a new (as in March 2020) MacBook Air 13 DC i5 1.6GHz/8Gb/256Gb. Can the memory be upgraded to 16 Mb RAM and can the SSD be upgraded to 1Tb? Thank you
Luke - thanks great info. I have a 2013 15" MBP Retina that says "Early 2013" and yet the guts inside has the two fans and the SSD slot looks identical to the one shown in your video. So it is actually a Mid-2013 or Late-2013 inside it seems? I also note that the underside of the my cover has the date 13.05.14. Under Hardware Storage it says I have Apple SSD SM768E SATA. Can I upgrade to the NVMe SSD with the MBP adapter like you show in the video? Or is the mother board expecting SATA only so the upgrade would be an expensive fail? Thanks
Hey Luke! Great video as always. I’ve read an article that says that MBP 2013-2015 has some issues with sleep/hibernating. Any experiences of those on your upgrade?
