What if Mega Man (1987) was an ARCADE GAME? ~ YM2203 Cover

- Hello again, everybody! It's been a couple months since my last upload, but rest assured that today's video is something special! Not only is this my second work using Furnace, but it's also my first one using FM synthesis, a retro sound you're probably familiar with if you've listened to some Sega Genesis soundtracks. I wanted to propose an idea: what if, instead of making the original Mega Man for the NES, Capcom initially developed it as an arcade game? The company was no stranger to the arcade scene in the 80s, so I thought it'd only make sense to utilize a chip commonly found in their releases from that time: the Yamaha YM2203.
The idea came to me quite a while back, but only recently had I been shown a tweet with some incredible sprite art (fx jho7835/status/...) and was thus inspired to make it a reality. The preset I used in Furnace to make this is called "Capcom Arcade", and it's made up of two YM2203 chips, with six FM and PSG channels each; the music doesn't use any of the PSG channels, but the sound effects, which I included as an extra touch, use them exclusively. I aimed to arrange these tracks as if Manami Matsumae herself made them, carefully transcribed from the originals, and not based on the Wily Wars or Powered Up renditions. The instruments were ripped from Capcom's own Legendary Wings (1986)- shout out to fellow chiptune musician and friend Andrew Ambrose for helping me figure that out! And also thank you to CapJagged/@Jho7835, artist from the tweet above, for inspiring me to make this upload!

Impressive remix! Happy to hear that my art inspired you. The soundtrack's nice and sounds exactly like what if Capcom released Mega Man 1 on the Arcade first!
Really happy you took the time to listen to my cover! Thank you for your kind words.
I hope someone could make a Mega Man 1 arcade styled fangame out of this.
I'd play that in a heartbeat
Same.
Ok, someone HAS to make a fully playable arcade port of Mega Man now
man i really like the sound of cutman doing his little CHIKICHIKI
I know, right? Peak sound design 😄
A Custom Jamma (Capcom arcade board which also had Ghosts N' Goblins, Street Fighter, Trojan, etc.) port of Mega Man would be cool.
I like the inclusion of sound effects. :)
Glad you do! Makes me feel like my efforts to recreate them were worth it :)
Really cool!! Love this a lot I’d love to hear the whole thing! The sound effects really sell that it could exist! If you do the whole thing I’d omit them though, haha. Maybe you could put it over footage of Wily Wars or smth- that feels like the closest visually to an arcade port of MM there could be. Anyway regardless this is a super cool what-if!
Eyo, thank you very much, Isabelle! You're correct to recognize that the PSG sound effects are there to help make this a proof-of-concept sorta thing, I'd leave them out if I did the whole soundtrack haha. Really glad you liked this one, you've always been a big chiptune inspiration for me, so thank you for taking the time to listen to this!
Someone on twitter pointed out that the music in rockman1 commercial used a specific ym soundchip (I forgot the numbers of) that sounded like the ones from other capcom arcade games like bionic commando and ghosts n goblins
2:16 And then goes BOOM NOW!
Do you think you'll ever make a full remix of the whole Mega Man OST? It'd be awesome to hear!
Nice :D
Great work, bro! Glad I could help out! ^w^
Thanks again for helping me see it through!
@@levir.starsmusic You're welcome! 😁
A Mega Man 1 arcade would be awesome!
It could be like the power fighters where in a time limit on which boss to choose, and a time limit for the level and boss,
and then repeats over and over, ngl a concept like what would be awesome!
@@SketchieProductions231 exactly what I had in mind!
That is amazing, I'm interested to see more of this in the future please. :D
Absolutely stunning! It really gives the vibes of an old arcade Capcom game, like Gun.Smoke or Bionic Commando :D
Thank you man, it's exactly what I was going for and I'm glad my work paid off!
It's really odd you included sound effects. Nonetheless, great remixes my guy!!!
Thank you!!
DUDE I LOVE THIS!!!! Glad people are recognizing this era of arcade gaming lol
On a side note, will you make separate video releases of the songs/SFX at some point?
I really love what you did with the boss theme. way better than the original on NES
Thank you! I enjoy the base composition a lot, but the second pulse channel acting as a reverb kinda ruins it IMO, so I sought to try it differently
Interesting take on a soundtrack arrangement! If you plan to do the same thing for Mega Man 2, it better be in the LED Storm/Mad Gear style.
I'll look into that music. Thanks for your comment!
Where is the rest of the music
What about the other Stages?
If I get enough engagement on this video, I'll arrange the rest of the soundtrack in this style!
@@levir.starsmusic OK
You able to do this for the whole game's soundtrack tho?
We'll see!
@@levir.starsmusic Seconded, love this!
@@levir.starsmusicAnd as an afterthought, see if that guy you mentioned from Twitter could do more of that arcade-style sprite work
If Rockman was made for Famicom Disk System different SFX would be added
YM2203? Never heard of that sound chip.
It's a less popular one, but it can sound nice given the right treatment
