Saw this last night! Oh how amazing it was 👏🏼👏🏼 Not since the 80s & 90s has there been body horror so audacious, IMO. ❤️ My fave body horror was Society but, now I’ve found a new favorite. 💯
I looooooved the ending. Can definitely see your point of view if it though. One of the most insane endings I’ve possibly ever seen. The sound design deserves an Oscar nomination, seriously.
I saw Revenge a couple of years ago, never wanted to eat a chocolate marshmallow cookie after that watch!!!! Disgusting close-up! Just the trailer of Quaid eating a shrimp made me gag! Can't wait to see this one!
The ending reminded me of That Scene from Monty Python’s Meaning of Life, only turned up to 11 and swapping out one type of bodily fluid for another. I’ve heard reviewers opining about possible Best Actress Oscar buzz, but I think the last 15 minutes kills that momentum which is a shame.
It’s well worth the wait! It was fantastic, Demi Moore was INCREDIBLE, both of the actresses were but seeing Demi get into a roll unlike anything we’ve seen her do before….she killed it! The make up effects were awesome but the sound editing deserves an Oscar!!
As far as eating during this movie, I will be buying my usual bag of sweet buttery popcorn. If need be, I will quickly dump the contents on the floor and hurl into said bag.
The Thing and The Fly are always my favorites. The other ive seen was The Human Centipede and thats a one and done, esoecially when ive seen it as a teenager. 😅
It was like a David Cronenberg and David Lynch Baby that grew up on The Neon Demon color palette and Requiem for a Dream editing style. I mean that as the highest of praise. The body horror practical effects are amazing. Margaret wears prosthetic breasts that seem so real, it must have had some cgi erasing the seams. And Demi’s body horror moments…it’s a shoo-in for Oscar make up effects. A masterpiece in many ways. I’d still lose a little bit in the third act…but, hey…if you’re gonna go there…go there. Damn.
What I didn't understand was, why did the older version continue on with the substance, if she wasn't able to experience the youth herself or have the ability to recall it afterward? What was in it for her? She was essentially just accelerating her own age for another unknown person to benefit.
It was extremely Carrie-esque at the end but without the rage just the “horror” . This movie was just.. different lol and I think I liked it? But the ending was comforting in a way and a little predictable bc there was just no way to have it all ya know ? & idk. I wanna critique the end but it just kinda worked. It was giving extended episode of black mirror but a really good one!
if I read or hear one more person talk about the prawn scene being horrific I'm gonna scream. Grow up! a chicken leg gets pulled out of a belly button ffs
The first two-thirds of the movie is outstanding. However.... things went wasaay off the rails in the final 15+ minutes. Didn't like what happened in the final scenes. It's just too over the top goofy.
Pretty consistent reviews. Couple of non commercial movie like My Old Ass and this movie that are women centric but very different stories. This is diversity in film making. Body horror? Nothing comes to mind. Not big on gross for sake of being gross… The Thing counts? The Fly? Don’t know. The last few years of body horror movies are disappointing… Titane, Infinity Pool, Crimes Of The Future and such had potential, but did not impress me at the end.
Your face on the thumbnail probably says it all. 😂 As much of a horror hound as I am, gore has never been my fave. 🥴 I’m still excited to go see this one because the meaning behind it as well as all the love it’s getting! Enjoy your reviews … and your glasses! 😁🫶
If it’s like the first omen this is a W, horror I feel movies or gaming that fear or just sense of being uncomfortable is what makes it a thrill I love raw shit like that, black mirror needs to come back more than ever
This movie wasn’t disturbing at all. After watching a few reviews I went into this expecting to be grossed out beyond measure. Instead, I found myself laughing (a lot) towards the end. This movie really did not need that final act. It could’ve wrapped up before that and been a much better movie overall. The last act is just comically bad on so many levels. One saving grace is that it did remind me of The Thing which is one of my all time favorite horror movies.
The allegory and cautionary tale of succumbing to vanity and ego aside, the violence and visual horror are not what I expected even though stylistically they’re comforting reminiscences of the beloved 70s and 80s horror genre (The Thing, Carrie, The Shining) which often gives me catharsis. Many uncomfortable scenes test the audiences's threshold for violence on the silver screen - and I survived them (it is not Terrifier 3). It’s like watching a movie version of 80s TWILIGHT ZONE on steroids with tons of BBB: blood, boobs and butts.
I like 'Possessor' (not like 'the thing' isn't better, but everyone will probably say that). I'll have to check this out when it comes to streaming. Thnx.
I was all in until the last 20 minutes. Suspending belief is required obviously here and it's up to the movie to set the boundaries so you know where things stand. It played by the rules until the last 20 minutes. Then it decided to not just step over the boundary but leap over it. It took me out of the movie.
That's some high praise! I'm a bit squeamish, but I really love unusual films. I enjoyed Infinity Pool, but I'm too scared to watch Crimes of the Future. Should take a chance with this one?
I search out and love unusual movies myself. I'm also squeamish and didn't find Crimes of the Future that bad, I was expecting something far worse, and I've seen way worse. You'll be fine. I can't wait to see this movie.
Crimes of the Future is a bit weirder, with extreme body modifications replacing "old school" sexual intercourse. theres also a handful of surgery scenes. but it also has an incredibly kind heart. Infinity Pool has way gnarlier violence and is more downbeat. i think u should be fine :)
I haven't seen Crimes of the Future yet, but enjoyed Infinity Pool. I think the message in this is what makes it so powerful which is then enhanced by the imagery. Just don't eat during certain scenes 😂🤮
Not a fan of body horror. The closest I get is the cockroach death scene in Nightmare on Elm Street 4, but other than that, I avoid the sub-genre (I’m talking about YOU, Brian Yuzna). I already had no interest in seeing The Substance and this review just confirms that it’s probably not for me.
Honestly, if you stomached that, you can probably stomach movies you haven’t watched because that was rough. Lol. That scene lives rent free in my head, years later. 🥴 The pizza scene in NOES 4 is still drilled in my head. 🤢I’m a huge horror fan, but I’m not so much into the gore aspect, so I completely understand you there! 😊👍
I'm not reviewing it, nor giving any of my money/attention to that group of individuals. I find them to be misogynistic bigoted christofascists and they turn my stomach with their rhetoric.
@@MoviesAndMunchies So,...you're not going to vote for Trump then...? 🤣🤣🤣 To be fair, I have very eclectic tastes on RUclips and my entertainment in general, so watch all sorts of stuff, extreme left/right/up/down & middle of the road. As long as it's entertaining of course! ;)
Saw it today. What a joke. Rip off of Kubrick and The Thing 1982. 3rd act is beyond silly and unoriginal. You don't feel for characters. If you want a real classic, watch Clockwork Orange. This movie was also too long. And forgettable.
The Substance is easily one of my top favorites this year💉🩸. I love that it’s a beautifully shot film, with such a meaningful message, while also being utterly disturbing and quite disgusting at times. It’s a joyride that gets bonkers as the film goes on. Saw it alone Friday night, then with my Brother Saturday night, and taking my mother 😅 Monday afternoon. 😂
Saw this last night.. movie was insane. Someone yelled out “F!ck yeah” when the movie ended 😂 the ending was CRAZY
just finished it, the ending was so metal and I was laughing and clapping with joy the whole time lmao

DISGUSTING AND BRILLIANT
12/10
I'm certain that David Lynch's "The Elephant Man" was a strong inspiration.
I also think some of style was inspired by Benny Benassi's Satisfaction music video.
The Fly (1986) is my favourite film of all time.
oh then you'll LOVE this movie haha
Same here.
@@eldritchbidoof Annnnd.... I did haha. My favourite of the year so far. Unlikely to be topped honestly.
@@tjdw5251 hey, glad you saw it!! I'd agree with that 100%, definitely my fav horror film of the year without a doubt
The makeup and practical effects are bloody brilliant. I love everything about this film. Demi needs an award for her work, too.
Love that your glasses matches the logo
And your shirt matches to background lights
The red mic being the cherry on the cake
I was literally coming to the comments to say this! 😆 I always think it when his reviews start, but I’ve never commented it. Lol.
Thanks!!
I saw Revenge a couple of years ago, never wanted to eat a chocolate marshmallow cookie after that watch!!!! Disgusting close-up! Just the trailer of Quaid eating a shrimp made me gag! Can't wait to see this one!
Dennis Quaid was so brilliantly disgusting & the way it was edited….perfection!!

I haven’t laughed as hard as I did during g the last act in any move for years. So crazy and awesome.
Looking forward to seeing this! My favorite body horror film is David Cronenberg's "Videodrome".
Great movie!! Long live the New Flesh!!
Awful movie but thats just probably me… , wouldnt even give it a star. Not for being disgusting, its just really bad.
I havent been this excited for a movei in a long time. This looks freaking awesome

The Thing, Infinity Pool, and X
I saw this in the theater. This is a film you should see for the experience. The audience was so engaged in the film
Well said. Caught it today. Massive entry into the body horror genre. A new instant classic?
As far as eating during this movie, I will be buying my usual bag of sweet buttery popcorn. If need be, I will quickly dump the contents on the floor and hurl into said bag.
