It's nothing short of amazing what crowd mentality will do to a person's sense of self preservation. No one would dare stand on a race track while cars are zipping around it at 150 miles per hour, but if you saw 2 people already standing on the track without a care in the world then surely it must be a safe place to stand and linger, right? No? Well imagine it's 100 people standing on that race track instead of 2. It's almost guaranteed the 101st person to approach and witness this gathering will see no reason to doubt that it's a safe place to sit down and have a picnic, regardless of every obvious indication of the dangers of doing so. Surely 100 people can't all be wrong about something so obvious, right? A false sense of comeraderie replaces all instincts of self preservation and the crowd grows larger.

Doesn't matter. In this case, the area wasn't big enough to safely host OR drive in. The speed at which this happened, and the closeness of all involved, means the kills switch is negligible. Even with a kill switch, it doesn't negate forward momentum enough to avoid what happened.

I've worked with monster trucks as a pyrotechnican here in Australia.
One thing I've come to realise is that Monster Trucks are an extremely unpredictable and dangerous vehicle. Every part of its construction is pushed to the physical limits and singular failures can lead to this kind of accident. Normally for dangerous vehicles you would expect redundancies to allow for a partial failures of a system to not be a catastrophic risk.
I've seen Monster Trucks with remote shut down be remotely turned off by safely officers still continue to roll forward or hop due to its forward momentum even if the brakes are locked.
Monster trucks should never be anywhere that doesn't have large concrete or weighted shipping containers barriers. They can easily push over and jump anything less than 6ft so minimum 10-12 ft barriers are a must.

I wondered why the driver didn't just kill the ignition, assuming that it had one like it should. Race cars are required to have a kill switch onboard, though that is the limit of my experience since I have none with so-called "monster trucks"...

It was only a few seconds to disaster, literally.
But even without the glass in the fuel system the multiple and glaring safety breaches of the event itself was the real problem and something WAS going to go wrong. Poor truck driver. He shouldn't have accepted that job offer that day under those circumstances. Very risky. Like 100% risky!

My mom was crying and pleading for the last female victim that was rescued to just hold on while she kept losing her grasp of the rescue line due to the freezing water. I... can't even imagine walking up to that scene and going "yeah, this is a good place for my kids". Even the guy yanking strollers out of the way in case the truck started moving again... the whole thing was packed in like sardines. There's no way in hell I'd let my kid near something that close with just "rope" barriers in place.
You gotta question the IQ of the people standing around to watch as much as the organizers. Before I was a dad, I was like a lot of people and assumed "I'm sure someone checked this out and it's okay" - but now I realize that the one who's supposed to be checking it out for my kids is, well, me.

Initially I didn't think the driver should be charged at all. Mechanical failures happen a lot in motorsports, and with these extremely specialized vehicles I can see why a piece of glass could lodge itself in the throttle and jam it open. Then I remembered something else, that being the fact that most cars built for motorsports have a kill switch that instantly disconnects the battery. If this truck didn't have one, that's negligence on the owner's/mechanic's side. If it did have one but the driver didn't pull it, then yeah the driver would still be at fault. Still, that doesn't excuse the organizers for not planning the show to take place in an area with more room that monster trucks need.

Worth noting that all monster trucks in the US running on any circuit have to have RII's installed to remotely cut power for exactly this reason. That truck is also a US import, built as Overkill and running in the PENDA days. This isn't a case of poorly built equipment, this is a case of some hack buying excellent equipment and ignoring or removing safety equipment and running it anyway. The dude didn't even have an air filter on to stop debris getting into the motor, which is what caused this to begin with.

The motors have blower straps, the transmissions have kevlar blankets, the U joints have cages and kevlar blankets, the steering knuckles/wheels are retained with extremely strong steel cables for when they break off etc.
The only "weak" point is the fourlinks, which sort of act as a mechanical fuse, breaking first so more expensive stuff doesn't get destroyed instead.
The US takes motor sport very seriously. There's a lot of development that goes into safety, especially on something designed to push the limits and break, like a monster truck.
There's some pretty nice stuff in europe too. An old bigfoot chassis is out there, Dixon's PEI swamp thing, plus some modern CRD trucks as well. This event was someone buying 20 year old stuff and not taking it seriously at all. And the obvious happened.

This is both a tragedy and a "what-the-actual-feck?" event.
I've had a stuck throttle on reaching the top of a steep hill. It's scary, in fact it's bloody terrifying! And I had only been driving a year. Mercifully I was able to _turn the bloody engine off_ and then steer onto a safe grass verge.
This was a long time ago with a very mechanical car. No steering lock. But as soon as the power was cut, the brakes took over - obviously I'd been standing on the brakes from the second I realised what was happening with the throttle. If I as an 18 year-old could recognise the problem and deal with it in less than about 3 seconds, someone with such experience has no excuse.
Turned out that the spring for the throttle had snapped on the way up the hill. Fortunately an off-duty traffic officer pulled up a matter of minutes later, and managed to diagnose it and give me a temporary fix to get home.
Some years later my then bf (now old feller of more years than I'll admit to) pulled off the motorway we were on (fortunately at a junction that we were next to - it was a matter of yards at 70mph for him to make the decision) and drove up a steep bank, cutting the power immediately. He had realised that the brakes had failed and got us into a safe place. Again, he was a young man (early 20s) who diagnosed and dealt with a potentially deadly problem (it was the M25...) in seconds.
Given that man's history, a) I'm surprised he was ever allowed to drive anything after the first incident, and b) more appalled that he was allowed to carry on after the next. I'm also disgusted by the town council's actions when it comes to a lack of common sense, let alone high-level health and safety practices.
My heart goes out to all the bereaved families, especially that of the young lad. I don't think I could control my anger had I been in his family's place. They're better people than me.

@@samhouston1288 I vaguely recall few Florida mudding events where drunks got attendees with their 'monster' trucks to run-over bystander's cars *after* those _cars provided for that purpose_ were exhausted.
      A google search now only finds 'Swamp Cabbage Weekend' (2012) described as a teenager returning to find her car flattened;
But I recall an incident where the owner of the car was actively screaming/yelling over the drunks to try and get the (drunk) truck driver not to, where there were no barriers, the crowd-line/space forming as people recognize the danger.
(Similar atmosphere to another revel/uncontrolled events where drunks pushed/shoved an unsuspecting teenaged girl into unavoidable collision with an acrobatic display, resulting in crippling life-altering injury to her and the demonstrator -ed: who may have been related?)

I wonder what kind of insurance they had. I hope that people were at least able to sue them.

Strange that a man created so much suffering on 3 separate occasions - 3 killed, one burned, 46 injured, and who knows how many traumatized, but he only suffered consequences on the third stunt where he was jailed for 15 month. A bit infuriating

He's a hired driver. He didn't build any of those vehicles, nor arrange for spectators to be near them. He did what someone paid him to do.

This happened around 20 years ago in an arena on the east cpast, US. Full safety regs were followed. A freak event, with the truck goong over 30 rows into the crowd.

All I’m saying is is if a place doesn’t have a good enough infrastructure, and the audience can’t sit far enough back then they shouldn’t have these kinds of events

The driver obviously was somewhat at fault, but I have no idea why he was punished way more harshly than the organizer? The organizer seems way more responsible for the accident in my opinion, especially since the accident was caused by glass in the throttle body, it’s much more the fault of the organizer for putting the driver in that situation in the first place, as accidents can and will happen at these shows.
