Bach. Prelude & Fugue No. 2. The first minor Prelude & Fugue from his Well-Tempered Clavier - written to show the possibilities of equal temperament (where you can play in tune no matter what key you play). Before this, music was often centered around each key, where if you were in tune in C major, you were out of tune in F# major (or vice versa) - this was a problem if you wanted to change keys. So to show how equal temperament solved this problem, Bach wrote two books of Preludes & Fugues, writing one for each of the 12 major and minor keys - probably not realizing that he had just written one of the most important musical works of all time. I hope you have a great Monday ♥

I used to know this song by heart (the fugue, not the prelude). I heard it in a recording in college and it was played more like a mad man was at the keyboard. The energy was intense. I recall reading that when Bach was in the church practicing, people would walk by and see him thought the door with a glazed look in his eyes playing in a craze. I wish someone would post it playing in that head space. It does so much for it.

I’m a beginner pianist, but i really like Bach as a lot of his work is based on repetition, with slight variations. It makes it easy to break down, and memorise (cant read music). I can actually play a lot of his stuff now, and people think I’m actually an experienced musician. I’m currently working on this, and Its just like many others, just faster. If you break any piece of music down, and play it slowly enough, you can learn anything, within reason. With my current skill level, as long as the music doesn’t require the hands to move great distances up and down the keyboard, in a short period of time, constantly making new shapes, I know I can learn the piece. BTW, I’m close to 50, so if i can do it, anyone can!😂👍😎

Fun fact: For anyone who loves Spring Awakening, the first two measures of this piece are used in the show. It is not on the cast Recording but in the show, it is during the segment on the song, “My Junk” where they ask the character to play “The Prelude in C minor” I always thought it was Duncan Sheik’s but i only found this out with old scores I found of the off Broadway score. Except apparently they did more than just the first two measures

Yeah the only beginner piece in his Well Tempered Clavier is that Prelude in C major. Every other piece is at least at an advanced level. Work on some other stuff for a while, and come back to the other Prelude and Fugues in due time and I’m sure you’ll be great.
