Another great video! We’ve been lucky enough to fly Upper once with Virgin and we specifically picked A350 flights because of the seats. It’s not cheap and we would feel disappointed if we paid what we did and got these seats. As you say, better than economy but these seats have definitely had their day!

Yes, thankfully we got them on an upgrade bid so didn’t pay full whack for them so for us it was worth it. But like you say, not the best 😞

I recently booked a flight on the 350 LAX to LHR and wanted to try upper class for the long haul flight. Delta switched my flight to the 787-9 and luckily I noticed the much different seat configuration. Thanks to videos like this I knew that the sideways seats were not for me and not what I signed up for and paid for. I called Delta and had them switch me back to a 350 airplane which they did at no extra cost. So glad I caught it before my flight! In this case I booked thru Delta, but the flight is operated by Virgin Atlantic.

Oh my gosh, you two make every review so much fun. My husband and I are huge fans. We both had some big chuckles over your descriptions and comments. My husband and I flew to and from Heathrow from San Francisco on Virgin Atlantic upper class, (first time) in March this year. Your review completely validated my choice of flying on the A350 over the 787. I spent so much time watching reviews etc. before our trip and decided on the A350. Glad I spent all the time making my poor husband (also named Rich😊) watch all of the videos with me. We had an amazing trip and now I believe the seat configuration makes a huge difference. And so true that the Virgin Atlantic crew made all the difference. They truly make you feel first-class. Thanks for another wonderful video!

We flew Business Class on Delta last year to Europe from the US. The accommodations were nice and spacious, but the food wasn’t edible for the most part. I would have preferred the snack packs in Economy Class. We were served soggy cheeseburger’s and quiche that could have served as a hockey puck. Back to Economy Class this year for our yearly cruise.

Nice video! I like Virgin Atlantic. The flight attendants are friendly, and the service is excellent. They serve beer and liquor in the Economy cabin, which surprised me. I also enjoy their food. However, the only aspect I dislike is their Upper Class. If my business pays for Upper Class, I don't mind taking it, but I don't think it's worth the cost. I have traveled to London Heathrow (LHR) many times and have flown with Virgin Atlantic in Economy, Premium, and Upper Class. I found that Economy is the best option for me. If I need to fly first class (e.g., on a red-eye flight for a business meeting the next day), I prefer Delta One.

Great video! My BFF & I booked Virgin Upper Class on the 350 (LHR-JFK) in June 2022 but at the last minute, Virgin switched out the equipment to the 787. I basically knew what we were in for, but after visiting the Clubhouse & all it has to offer (🥂), I didn’t care until I saw all those feet across from me. But I agree w/you, the crew was wonderful & the food & drinks terrific. I’ll definitely give them another chance but book my seat on the left side, just in case.😉

Yes, as we got our seats last minute from an upgrade bid, all of the seats in the other side had already gone 😞

These UC seat design is from the mid-2000 when introduced on the A340-600. Hence why the design and all the trimmings look dated. It has taken Virgin 15-20 years to come up with a totally new UC seats in the 350-1000/A330neo.

I have flown all of their classes and I think Premium Economy has the best value. It’s similar to domestic USA first class on Delta but on long haul flights. The best privacy option flying upper class on a 787 is on the left side where there is a wall and no one across from you, A350 is still nicer. Great video, I’m a new subscriber.

Flew Upper class many years ago. It was great. They have never sold it as First class. But they have fallen behind other BC’s despite being ahead of the pack 15+ years ago. Their lounges at airports though are still a strong point. Not sure if the decline and lack of innovation has set in since being taken over?
Qatar A380 BC is great and the onboard lounge so great.

Several years ago on a work-paid business trip Virgin Atlantic was my first experience outside of coach. I flew round trip from the US to LHR in Upper Class. The airports lounges were amazing and the onboard experience was awesome. I talked about it for years. Fast forward to last year when we flew in United Polaris round trip to Europe. The seat layout was sooo much better than on Virgin. In my little pod I felt like I had complete privacy (odd numbered row by the window; even rows aren’t as private). There was tons of storage room. The food and service were not as good as Virgin but the lounges on both sides of the pond were very nice. Your video brings back memories of that trip on Virgin which I thought was so great at the time, there’s no way I’d choose to fly them again given that layout. I’m hoping to one day get to fly Qatar Q-suites or Emirates business class but I might have to wait until I win the lottery :)

Great video! We've never flown Upper Class on Virgin because we've found Premium Economy great value and gives us the little extras needed on a 9-10 HR flight. Your video has confirmed we've made the right decision. The snack wall on Virgin in Premium Economy offers so much more in the way of treats than you seemed to have been offered, unless some greedy passengers got there before you.😂

I had my best business class flight ever on Virgin Atlantic from LHR to KEN, better than Delta or American. Their lounge in LHR was amazing, too - table service with menus, free alcohol, salad bar and light bites. Huge space. No one peered over my seat, lol. Throw all the stuff in the “pocket things” on the floor! The IFE was the best selection I’ve ever seen! Dining and flight attendants were amazing, and I especially loved the cream tea served right before landing in the US. Didn’t know they expected you to take the S&P, though! Glad your quibbles went away. If you want to experience a bad Business class, try Finnair! The seats were in pods, and you had a foot bed, but the seats didn’t recline or slide down at all! The flight attendant said “Well, there’s a pillow to put behind your bed.” AND you had lift up a middle piece to go between the seat and the foot bed. The controls for the tray table, etc., were so complicated and “non-transparent” that I had to grr get the flight attendant to explain them to me. You would have had to be a contortionist to slide down flat. You got a great deal on that price!

Thank you for an excellent, thoughtful review. I fly SEA-LHR about 3x per year in Virgin Upper and BA Club World. I mix and match depending on which airline is offering the best price. I know both products well, and I've had excellent experiences with both Virgin and BA crews. Just a small correction on your commentary. SEALHR on BA is twice daily currently, with the 787-10 and 777 200 and 300 models. You mentioned that the BA service is on 20 year old 777. That isn't entirely true. If you take the earlier of two flights from SEA-LHR you'll be on a very new 787-10. Most of them on the SEA -LHR route are 3 years old or less. If you take the later flight you'll be on a 777 ranging anywhere from 25 years old to 3 years old, so it is a mixed bag.
As for a comparison between BA Club World and Virgin Upper Class, I have found both to be excellent products, and I have flown them quite a few times to notice that you can have great crews on both. Where it differs is the seat. Virgin Upper class on their 787-9s are the worst business class seats of any of the lie-flat products that I have experienced. Whoever OK'd this configuration at Virgin should be fired. Who wants to face fellow passengers, often with their shoes and sometimes socks off? No thanks. Compare this to BA's Club Suites with the privacy door, and normal front facing configuration allowing you to comfortably look out the window without straining your neck. There's something about the privacy door that creates a mindset of a cocoon, and for me allows me to clear my mind and rest more comfortably across the Atlantic. If you have the opportunity to fly BA's Club Suites in the future, give them a try and I'd love to hear your review. That being said you may also look out for Virgin's Suite product with the privacy door on their A350 or the A330-900 neo. - an excellent product on par with BA's Club Suite. Cheers!

Very fair review! I've done Upper Class a few times now - first time was March 2020 - and have managed A350, 787 and A330. I'm very short, so if I sit on the left on the A330 or 787, I just feel like I'm in a very private cubicle. Just the wall in front. I think the seat and cabin are dated, including the IFE, but actually find the seat comfortable. Having to ask crew to make the bed is a faff, but they're usually lovely and proactive on the night flights. I like a firm mattress, so have found it very comfortable to nap on...but have only tried shorter JFK-LHR flights so far. Absolutely lacking storage, and mad that the A350 is no better.
IFE selection mediocre, and it's annoying that they don't do free messaging like their partners. Discovered I had free access via my Mastercard and Boingo on the A350 though - nice.
The amenity kit is pitched as sustainable, but always just seems cheap to me. I only tried Premium before they changed them, but even the old Herschel pouch for that was better. At least you could reuse it! In 2020 they at least have you really nice, proper socks to make up for the rest of it being a bit crap - had a variety for different routes I think? But that's gone and they're the usual cheap ones that are fine for a flight now. I mean, it's all fine...but just fine. Others do it much better and I'm tired of sustainability as a cover for cheapness.
Meals generally good! Tend to go for express menu from JFK because I'll eat in the Clubhouse. Would say food is more fun/tasty than gourmet.
Love the PJs, even though S/M are big on me - wish they did XS.
Crew are generally superb. Even with the niggles regarding various aspects and the things I'd change, they tend to make it feel like a special experience. Some have absolutely treated me like a VIP and I only wish I could feel half as valued in my daily life! So I continue to hand over my money...

Upper Class is a business class product. Regarding the seats, if they are going to make the seats so that they have to be rotated by cabin crew in order to turn them into a bed, they could at least make the mattress deep and amazingly comfortable - they missed a trick here.

I think the 787 Upper Class product probably worked at the time, however, times change and this product is far inferior to other VA Upper Class offerings. If you get a chance, fly the A330neo Upper Class suites, the difference is night and day.

Firstly - I love VA, the way they do things... and if possible I'll always try to give them a preference.
I've flown this plane (VA 787) several times (HK to London before the route was abandoned) and Mumbai to London - booked to fly that one again next year. I've also been lucky (using points for all of this, otherwise... not wealthy enough) to fly Qantas, Cathay, Emirates and BA business class long hall. I agree with the review 100% - the seat is the worst part of the deal. However, to be fair - it is not quite the worst business seat - that 'honour' goes to BA in 2-4-2 (!!) business configuration. Now those BA seats REALLY resemble hibernation pods on an interstellar spaceship in the movies - very much coffin-like.
Having said that - ANY business class where you can lie flat is immeasurably better than THE BEST available economy. It is also much better than premium economy, however the price is, of course, a factor to consider. Premium economy is, again, nicer than economy, but for me - the jump to business from premium is greater than economy to premium economy. The ability to lie flat is the clincher for me, plus the fact that there is nothing immediately in front of your face and the seat in front (if there is one) cannot recline towards you. Well, there is more of course: a direct isle access, much more space, no sharing armrests, no-one snoozing on your shoulder, no need to climb over anyone (or flight attendant to lean over you to serve someone) - unless you are unlucky to be in BA 2-4-2 business class....
Back to Virgin Atlantic Upper Class in 1-1-1 configuration - yeah, it's better than any economy (premium included), but when compared to other modern business class offerings - it is very much lagging behind. It's like a marathon runner finishing two hours after the winner... good, but not competitive. The check-in at Heathrow is great, the lounge is great, cabin crew and catering too - but the most important part - your comfort on a 9-10 hour flight is not great when compared to the competition. The seats are very much out of date and need to be replaced.
Given the choice - If I were using cash I would not choose VA 1-1-1 Upper Class (meaning business) over others UNLESS it was at least 30% cheaper. And I DO love VA...

Mind you I don’t even drink alcohol. I’m a very easy person to please, I took the flight from London to Las Vegas. Ive flown all versions of the Virgin Upper Class and this is the worst configuration in my view. I flew Retreat Suite on the 11th August to NYC and flew the 350-900 left hand side on return and I've done 787, older 330's and former 747 Upper Class. The current 350-Neo Upper Class is decent, but the quality of the build is dire and won't last. Doors don't shut easily, seatbelts temperamental and even their premier Retreat Suite rattled at first as anyone walked past and need to be 're-fitted' during a flight. 27" screens were great (Retreat) but to my point, the above config has had its day and the bar was good when it came out but doesn't work now and we found Premier Ecconomy in it when our air crew took a break so became a free to those who wanted it (the snug not the bar).

@@visitwithusI flew the 350 to Las Vegas in January and back from NYC last month, both times in the left isle. I like the window facing seating on the left and right, preferring that to facing into the cabin or the central facing outwards into the cabin. The new 330-900 Neo, which I flew to NYC last month, was the new layout and that is 1 2 1 all facing forwards, with doors so you can get privacy and as a couple the central sections work really nicely. Just the build quality needs works and the seats are not that comfy, even in the retreat suite we flew in. Good content you're producing, thanks for taking the time.
