    Every company is short on pilots. If you are close on hours, go ahead and apply. All they can say is "no". APPLY, APPLY, APPLY.
    I applied 3 times to the same company, they noticed I wasn't going away, and they gave me a chance. You have nothing to lose by applying.

    Excellent topic. The jobs are out there for sure.

    Ag work is another way to build hours, low time pilots hired, but a very slow process, if it's cherry drying your lucky if you get more than 30 hrs in 3 months flying Antique aircraft.

    I got an question Sir, maybe awkward one, but still...Please be brutaly honest from you:
    First of all, got to say that Im glad that I stumbled on your video. It is so refreshing to see someone going straight to the point, not like other video online - so thank you.
    I was thinking about all of this you said on video even before you said it (250hr total) BUT knowing that I am not native English speaker and knowing that even 10 years after being in States people get annoyed by it, nobody admits it, but I can tell easily, so how could/would I build up my hours without being and instructor? I know new ones would avoid me - that is brutal truth. Is it even possible? Please advise. Thank you Sir.
    P.S. Before you ask, I am fluent in English (even though that is my 3rd language), but I have strong accent like Russian bad guys from movies.

    I have an eye injury. I dont think i can go commercial but my goal is to do cinematography and charter services. I can still own the company and hire pilots who are responsible to do the actual flying.

    Can you commingle fixed wing and rotary wing hours or is each specific?

    • @blave549
      @blave549 Год назад +1

      They are not co-mingleable, if that's a word. Logged hours between the two are completely different. But, some companies say "total time" without specifying that all of it has to be in rotary wing a/c.
      BTW in my case, after dreaming of flying helis for a living 20 years ago, I finally gave up because I didn't want to be a CFI and I'm not wealthy enough to buy 1000 hours of time. Some very lucky folks find a shortcut to "flying for money" other than as a CFI but that is very rare.

      There are examples where they state, 2000 hours total hours, 1500 helicopter. You will see varied requirements like that depending on any individual company!

    Why more time in Robinsons?

    • @HelicopterGround
      @HelicopterGround  Год назад +1

      That is set by the FAA under the SFAR 73 for Robinsons. SFAR 73 is a Special Federal Aviation Regulation, No. 73 (or SFAR 73 for short) that applies to anyone who wants to manipulate the flight controls, act as Pilot In Command (PIC), carry passengers, or teach in Robinson R22 and R44 helicopters (it does not apply to the R66).

    • @blave549
      @blave549 Год назад +2

      @@HelicopterGround I did not know that the R66 isn't under SFAR 73. That makes no sense to me -- the stuff that will kill you is (from what I know) identical between the 44 and 66. Did I miss something?

    What is the best way to get 2500 hours before becoming a medical helicopter pilot as a civilian?

    • @HelicopterGround

      The most common way people build time is becoming a Certified Flight Instructor.

    Do a lot jobs require a college degree?

  • @imachavel
    @imachavel 3 месяца назад

    3:15 college degree needed for a helicopter job as well as hours and time experience. So the idea "a college degree only helps a fixed wing pilot" is pretty bogus. There is your proof. EMS pilot requirements at certain companies are like 1000 hours of turbine time plus a college degree. So probably with CFI piston time 2000 hours total. Now obviously some EMS pilots will be hired without a college degree. But obviously anyone who has gone the helicopter route knows generally EMS is not hiring anything less than 4000 hour pilots. Its a VERY hard job to get. So the college requirement is more money but splits the hours in half. Not a bad deal. Just depends if the person has a restriction on money or time. Pilot training hours plus a college degree? Probably looking at 150k - 200k. IMHO with a measly 131 hours I can say probably flying a helicopter is harder than flying a space ship. I guess I can't qualify a NASA opinion based on no time in a space shuttle. There is another job that probably requires 200k in school attendance. Astronauts go through intense training but the actual shuttle itself is mostly fly by wire computations right? Astronauts need minimum fixed wing time but lots and lots and lots (years) of ground training in space physics and physiology? But learning to hover 😅 now that is tough. In fact that helicopter they sent to Mars only worked for a bit right? The atmosphere on Mars is totally different, totally different pressure altitude, totally different weather and density altitude, who knows if the rotor system was rigid or semi rigid or fully articulate but imagine getting the relative wind or induced flow calculations incorrect. I think the thing worked for a little while on that planet they tested the RPMs with a thin atmosphere here on earth and tested the engine and transmission and rotor system of that little helicopter extensively here and got it pretty close to how it operates on Mars. And it worked for awhile. But not too long. The shuttle it used to get there worked perfectly for its multi year journey. Helicopter on earth have been in development for like a hundred years or longer now and we still learn new things about IGE and OGE every day. Was that Mars chopper able to hold IGE or could only do running take offs? Crazy how under rated helicopter technology is. Only aircraft that has an airfoil that will not support the weight of the machine. A planes wings support the weight of the aircraft. A parachute supports the weight of the sky diver. A helicopter uses induced flow and can auto rotate without the engine. Otherwise no deal. Why not get a college degree if you are flying and get license and ratings? Ok no one wants to spend 200k instead of 50k. Just remember helicopter is a job that in some ways requires skills thar surpass that of all other forms of aviation. You either have the money or you have the time or you have both.
