Triple jump is a difficult event to get right.
As well as the very specific conditioning needed - you also need to be able to produce long jumps when it matters in competition. Developing a robust model over many seasons of training is crucial - so that, for example, aspects such as phase ration (distances of the hop, step and jump) are patterned and consistent, your arm action is effective, and the contacts and trajectory of your jump optimised.
For many jumpers this takes time and a number of competitions to groove in. Coach John Shepherd (www.johnshepherdfitness.com/blog) looks at a top meet in the UK (British League Premiership) where one of his jumpers competed (Jonathan Ilori best of 16.28m) and discusses some of the crucial aspects of triple jump technique.
By seeing how other jumpers compete and seeing what they are good at and also what they need to work on will help you and your triple jumping.

I've been watching and listening to Christian Taylor recently and become more and more impressed by the crazy amazing athlete he is. Also, Will and Omar, so much of talent there.
Doing so, I heard Christian mention working on the phases piece by piece and wondered if you follow that model and if so, how far out from competition do you put together full length jumps? The advice was primarily for beginning athletes, so it might be different from what you're doing with Johnathan for example. But theoretically, what would be an optimum time to piece it together?

Jonathan is landing his hip too close to his centre of mass. This is why his step phase is so low, because he doesn't have a stiff post to takeoff from. Moving it about 5-7cm further in front of him should give his step phase the extra power he needs to send him close to that 10.80-11m hop-step range.
