Can you just leave some out for the goats along with their other mineral supplements and baking soda to take as they know they require it, if they do? Goats seem to be miraculously made with an ability to know what it is their bodies need, in spite of us.

There is conflicting evidence to support what sheep and goats are driven to consume. I would not be inclined to leave out ammonium chloride for a few reasons. The main reason is, if taken in too high a dose, it could potentially be fatal. The second reason would be the cost. In the end, I haven’t tried to offer this free choice and can’t give you an answer based on any first hand knowledge.

What's the difference from barn lime and aluminum chloride?

      Do you mean ammonium chloride?
Barn lime is 90-95% calcium and is used (in this case) as a feed additive to help adjust the calcium to phosphorus ratio of feed. Poor calcium to phosphorus ratio has a significant impact on the development of urinary calculi.
Ammonium chloride is a chemical compound containing nitrogen and chlorine. It contains no calcium and will not have an effect on the calcium to phosphorus ratio. Ammonium chloride can acidify the urine and help to dissolve existing urinary calculi. You can think of this more as a medication.

If you are losing this many bucks due to urinary calculi, there is more than likely a problem with your calcium to phosphorus ratio. You will need to look at your feed and determine what your calcium to phosphorus ratio is. Your calcium should be at least 1-1/2 times higher than your phosphorus. You may also consider buying a feed that has ammonium chloride added to it as a preventive for urinary calculi.

Your feed bag should be labeled with calcium and phosphorus levels
